US politics: calm blue waters

After the primaries, we may have some quiet time before the election season heats up. Good news regarding the IRA, with its odds of being passed going up significantly. Kansas and its reaction to Dobbs was great to see, and the Democrats look in (somewhat) good shape to retain the Senate (although the House is still a lost cause).

Well --

- Indiana did not follow Kansas's example.

- Kevin Spacey ordered to pay damages of 31 million to the House of Cards PRODUCERS -- not the victims.

- We always have AZ and FL and, TX.

:dunno:

On the other hand --

- price of gas way down

- jobs way up -- which makes Wall Street unhappy, because, you know, all that employment, and some higher wages = inflation!  They Say.

On the tail side --

- rats, flies, mosquitos and horrible breeding grounds, called 'outdoor dining cafes' have taken over the streets, while vehicular crashes are way up. In fact, just last night, as we were having a post prandial cocktail we saw a woman driving a trucklike vehicle on our street smash into a parked car, and then drive off.  Maybe she didn't make it home as we could hear from the sidewalk that her axel was out of joint, so to speak, wheel chaffing against the bumper.

- monkey pox rages, and polio appears to be doing some community spreading. Don't forget covid.

- fool of a mayor does and thinks nothing.  Nothing at all.  Governor not much better.

:bang:

Lol the private insurance prescription drug price gouging measure didn't make it past the Parliamentarian.  I am so grateful to our pharmaceutical and petroleum overlords for whatever we get.

Well they deserve their wealth.

The rest of us just need to try harder.

Like Great Prophet Donald Trump.

Do you know how much effort it took for him to bankrupt a casino? The one thing it should be impossible to fail at?

He fucking worked hard at it. Greatest Businessman Man ever.

Spacey's lawyers should've gotten the case heard in Florida.

He could've then likely just argued against paying any damages because he himself has a credit as a executive producer and why pay damages to my rich self anyways?

I'm confident a Florida jury wouldve taken that bait.

After Indiana's vote for making abortion illegal, another subtly arises.  I guess it's a good thing date rape and rape don't happen on college campuses or to college students.  OH wait, they do!

Senate votes 51-50 with Harris breaking the tie to open debate on the IRA. Supposedly Republicans aren't going to waste time and use all 10 hours of their debate time, and Democrats already said they won't use all 10 of their hours. Which means by tomorrow morning this thing may actually pass.

The biggest question at this point is whether Republicans manage to peel any Democrats for poison pill amendments that end up staying in the final bill.

Most of them have pledged not to.  I suppose some endangered Dems might but it doesn't matter - Schumer will just offer a final amendment at the end that nixes any amendments that pass and add any last minute changes he needs (like Sinema's $5 billion for drought resilience).

The big question, as detailed in the link, is whether Bernie will move forward with offering amendments.

I know that usually there's a substitute amendment at the end of vote-a-rama that resets everything back to zero anyway, rendering it all moot outside of soundbites for campaign ads. But the way both sides were talking a couple days ago, it sounded like maybe there weren't commitments from all 50 Dems to go that route yet.

Things do seem more solid now though, including this:

Yeah the only question marks woulda been Manchema and it's safe to assume those hurdles were cleared when they publicly supported the bill (with Sinema's only caveat being the Byrd Bath).

How can I even be on the same land mass as Indiana?  WTF is wrong with these people?

The comments are something tho'.

So we can return any jelly fingered brats we don't need anymore into these drop boxes?

What about other people's kids could one shove a few noisy neighbors in those?

Asking for a friend.

I have no idea what it's supposed to be acronym for, it's always meant (Individual Retirement Account) in the past.

This side of the pond it’s the Irish Republican Army

Really? No one was keeping track of the Inflation Reduction Act and its almost imminent passage in the Senate?

I mean, just cuz the Senate had to stay up all night didn't mean I had to.  Even Sanders' amendments only got the support of the Georgia Senators.  Only real thing of interest will be the insulin vote and that still hasn't happened yet.
