There are even now reports of fighting at Donetsk Airport.

The pre-existing lines ran outside Donetsk Airport anyway. The Ukrainians stormed the airport a couple of weeks ago, secured parts of it and then beat a retreat when reinforcements came up. The Russians pushed the lines back out from the airport but in the last few days the Ukrainians have pushed back in again. So this could just be a return to the natural status quo lines of the area or a renewed push.

Losing Donetsk, the capital of the DPR, would of course be a huge embarrassment.

No.  That’s perfectly fair.  Hope Ukraine is as efficient as the Taliban was.

There's an anti-Taliban coalition gathering strength in the north of the country (as is traditional) and Islamic State's Afghan branch has been causing the Taliban huge problems for months, so that's not going quite so well for them.

@Ser Scot A Ellison --This may be of interest to you, though it may have nothing to say that you aren't already familiar with.

Remember when the US righteously intoned "godless Russia" all the time?  Now that Russia is intoning "godless West all the time -- I'm not certain that "ironic" can capture this reversal.

We are certainly living in a time, that was helped into creation, of course, by Russia, and is now full bore with Putin's alliances throughout the west as with t-Romp and BloJo, etc., of up is down, and white is black and nothing is real.

One interesting analysis that the equipment given to the Ukrainians, plus captured from Russia plus what exists in their stocks should be enough to equip either three or four battlegroups, each about the size of a US division. One battle group appears to be active in Kherson and one in Kharkiv Oblast. At least two more could be extant but not committed. Logically you'd hold one in reserve, but it means that Ukraine could be preparing for a third offensive and will move as soon as Russian defences and counter-strikes start building up on the Kharkiv front. The smart money would be to hit Zaporizhihia, because it could hasten the collapse of the Kherson front and between the two forces, they could then assemble a new group to clear out the land corridor (although you'd also need to hold strong defensive forces on the Crimean line). Zaporizhihia's north and NE front has been looking shaky for a while anyway.

The alternative would be to smash into Donbas directly and start looking to capture all of Donetsk Oblast and maybe invade Luhansk.

I’m delighted to hear that.

We have Russians and Ukrainians in our parish.  We pray for “the violence against Ukraine” to end at every service.

I meant irritating not because the comparison isn't apt, but rather because we weren't exactly crossing our fingers for the Taliban back then.

I think its important to acknowledge the real bad guys in this situation and how clearly we need to stop the war profiteers from encouraging any more fighting.

Please, Kim jong un, have some decency.

Moreover, what land or concessions does Chomsky think that Russia should give Ukraine in the interest of peace and saving lives?

Hasn’t Donetsk not been Ukraine owned since 2014? From looking it’s a pretty large city (close to a million) but I guess a lot of people have fled so it’s probably smaller now. Still a hard city to hold if the population there is still anti Ukraine. Then again it sounds like they’re not so enamoured of Russia after 8 years of them.
