We’ve known for some time that Viaplay – the Nordic streaming service that recently launched in the UK – has been working on a new version Sir Ian Rankin’s Rebus.

Now we know who is going to play the revered Detective Inspector.

Outlander and Trust Me star Richard Rankin is stepping into the hallowed shoes, once occupied by Ken Stott and John Hannah.

Based on Rankin’s novels, Viaplay says that the series opens with 40-year-old police officer John Rebus (Richard Rankin) at a personal crossroads after a fight with a notorious mobster in Edinburgh.

‘Joker 2’ steals the show as Trump court drama plays out just steps away
As a handful of protesters turned out in support of the former president, hundreds showed up for a chance to share the big screen with Lady Gaga

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/2023/03/27/joker-filming-trump-new-york/

Quote

.... “That’s New York, baby, always trying to outdo itself,” said an NYPD officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak to the media, about the juxtaposition of Joker’s fictional trial and Trump’s real-life grand jury. Because everyone’s a cinephile, the officer also remarked on the “strong Scorsese energy” of the “Joker 2” shoot.

The weekend scene looked much like it had on weekdays, but bigger, with wide-angle cameras on cranes, smoke machines and 1980s police cars. Colorful broadcast vans for Gotham’s local TV news were parked in spaces that vans for CNN and NBC had occupied just 24 hours earlier. Gone was the scrum of cameras trying to snap Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg as he went to work. Now, photographers, paparazzi and NYU students with long lenses were jostling to get a money shot of Lady Gaga revealing her red, white, black and extremely blond steampunk look as Harley Quinn — the psychiatrist who falls in love with Joaquin Phoenix’s Joker and becomes his criminal partner — for the first time. There were far more extras playing Gotham City police officers in riot gear or on horseback than actual NYPD officers helping control the set. ....

Protests erupt in NYC — not for Trump but for 'The Joker'

NEW YORK — Throngs of protesters gathered at the courthouse steps, chanting for freedom for their embattled hero. Police kept watch as passions flared and voices roared. Squad cars and television trucks encircled the commotion.

It’s a scene New York City authorities have been bracing for as prosecutors consider an indictment against former President Donald Trump, who has invited followers to rally on his behalf. But on Saturday, it was just a movie shoot — for the “Joker” sequel to be precise.

The roars faded and the crowds dispersed — on command — when the director yelled, “Cut!”

The New York City shoot for the upcoming “Joker” sequel had been planned for months; but in recent days, production crews wrestled with the possibility that filming could be disrupted by real-life protests over the Trump case — none of which have so far materialized. ....

There was more shooting for Joker 2 yesterday, on my street, as usual. Fake cops arresting someone next to a fake NYPD van.  It took me a few seconds to realize it was a film shoot as the street hadn't been closed down and there were no vans.  But all the extras and crew around gave it away.

The Day of the Jackal: Eddie Redmayne to Star in Sky & Peacock Original Series

Quote

Academy Award®, Tony Award, and BAFTA Film Award winner Eddie Redmayne (The Good Nurse, Trial of The Chicago Seven, The Theory of Everything) is set to star in the new original television series The Day of the Jackal in the lead role of the Jackal. He will also serve as executive producer on the project.

Based on the seminal Frederick Forsyth thriller and subsequent award-winning 1973 film adaptation of the same name from Universal Pictures, The Day of the Jackal is a bold, modern reimagining of the beloved and respected novel and film. While staying true to the DNA of the original story, this contemporary drama will delve deeper into the chameleon-like antihero at the heart of the story in a high octane, cinematic, globetrotting cat-and-mouse thriller, set amidst the turbulent geo-political landscape of our time.

BAFTA nominee Ronan Bennett (Top Boy, Gunpowder) is attached as writer and showrunner, with BAFTA nominee Brian Kirk (Game of Thrones, Luther) set to direct the series.

Lorne Balfe's score for Dungeons and Dragons: Honour Among Thieves, dropped this morning, and I bought it immediately (on iTunes) and am already on my second play-through.

On its own merits, outside the movie, it sounds good. It's not a Remote Control Production-sounding post-Crimson Tide-sounding wall of noise, as has been the outcome of many of Zimmer's students. It's very much a score that fits the visuals on screen, and, if I am correct, is the entire score, what with it being:

1. 49 tracks in length. Yes. 49. This is a big album.

2. The first of two albums

The run-time of the album is 1 hour, 30 minutes, 45 seconds, which for a movie that's reportedly 2 hours and 14 minutes long, suggests to me that it's likely all the music shown on-screen.

But what about the second album, you ask? Well, as Balfe said:

Quote

"[We're] writing the score but then also writing more which doesn't feature in the film, so we're going to do an extra album, which is going to be music to play with." He explained. "It's for gaming sessions, and it's for those when they’re gaming to be able to have their own soundtrack when playing."

You can expect to hear lutes, guitars, harps, strings, woodwinds, drums, and bagpipes in Balfe's score. It's been a delightful surprise for me, as he's an insanely prolific composer, but nothing he's ever composed has spoken to me. He's managed to definitely accomplish that with this score.

Kaos: Netflix’s British Twist on Greek Myths Should Be On Your Radar
Kaos has been a long-time coming. Netflix first announced it had commissioned this British dark comedy reimagining Greek mythology back in 2018, but the pandemic meant that filming only started last year, and there’s already been one major cast replacement.Covell wrote the critically acclaimed dark comedy drama The End of the F***ing World – an adaptation of Charles Forsman’s comics of the same name – for Channel 4 back in 2017

Set over eight one-hour episodes, Kaos is a contemporary reimagining of Greek Mythology exploring themes of gender politics, power, and life in the underworld. The official synopsis describes how six humans will discover they’re part of an ancient prophecy:

“Zeus has a wrinkle. He’s worried it might mean the end of the world and it might. Because on Earth, six humans unaware of their importance or their connection to each other learn that they are component parts of an ancient prophecy. Will they discover the truth about the gods, and what they’re doing to humans? And, if they do, will they be able to stop them?”

Deadline reported further plot details, explaining that Zeus becomes deeply paranoid about his own downfall, causing trouble for Hera, Queen of the Gods, on Earth, and leaving his rebellious son Dionysus free to cause havoc.

Elsewhere, Hades is losing his grip on the Underworld, and Poseidon – God of the Sea – is more concerned with partying. While the gods are distracted, people on earth are demanding change, and a group of mortals from different walks of life discover they might be destined to bring down Zeus.

Speaking to the Radio Times, creator Charlie Covell describes Kaos as:

“…a big show… hopefully with a kind of Game of Thrones scale – but tonally it should [feel] End of the World-y, in terms of its humour and its soundtrack and the look of it. One of the big steers for me was the Baz Luhrmann Romeo + Juliet as a look.”

Guy Ritchie's The Gentlemen Netflix series

Cast: Theo James, Vinnie Jones, Joely Richardson, Kaya Scodelario & Daniel Ings, Giancarlo Esposito, Peter Serafinowicz

2019's The Gentlemen followed an American expat (Matthew McConaughey) trying to sell off his highly lucrative marijuana empire in London, leading plots, bribery and schemes against him from an all-star cast in order to steal his power from under him.

Netflix's series will revolve around a new character, Eddie Halstead, who upon inheriting his late father's estate, realises he's sitting atop Pearson's weed empire. According to IMDB, the series' crux will follow the dilemma of “has this straight-up soldier got what it takes to master the dark arts of the British criminal underworld and take control of the entire operation?” as he dives headfirst into the world of London's drug cartels.

The first casting news that was been announced was Theo James, who we last saw stripping off in the second season of The White Lotus. He'll be playing Eddie Halstead, who accidentally finds himself sitting on top of the marijuana empire left behind by Matthew McConaughey.

James will be joined by Skins star Kaya Scodelario who'll play the as-yet-unknown character of Susie Glass. The cast will also be rounded out by Joely Richarson, Geoff Seacombe, Daniel Ings, Alexis Rodney and Vinnie Jones (because it wouldn't be a Guy Ritchie property without Vinnie Jones).

‘Game of Thrones’ Prequel About Aegon’s Conquest Eyed at HBO (EXCLUSIVE)

https://variety.com/2023/tv/news/game-of-thrones-prequel-aegons-conquest-hbo-1235570239/

Quote

A new “Game of Thrones” prequel about Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros is being actively discussed at HBO, Variety has learned exclusively from sources.

As the project is in its very early stages, no writer is currently attached, though sources say that the search is underway as HBO is keen to move forward and get it into development. Sources also say that there may be a feature component to the project, i.e. HBO and Warner Bros. would produce a feature film that would then lead into the potential series, though plans remain in flux at present.

The show would tell the story of how Aegon and his sister-wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, used their army and their three dragons to conquer six of the seven kingdoms on Westeros with the exception of Dorne. In doing so, Aegon I became the first king of Westeros, the first to sit on the Iron Throne, and the founder of the Targaryen Dynasty. Those events took place approximately 300 years prior to the events of “Game of Thrones.”
