[SPOILERS] Rings of Power: Ah, Mithril, that's the good stuff!

I've always thought the meteor guy would be Gandalf.  This show is already mid-stage GOT level, where the audience is spending more time filling in the blanks and creating back stories and explaining away plot holes than the writers.

That's what nerds do.  Or they dissect it for all it's flaws.  I look for what is entertaining and enjoyable and don't worry too much about anything else.

I like this show overall, but I feel like it has so much potential that could be put to better use if they had better writers and showrunners. I don’t even just mean the source material, but also the new material and the actors. Without even changing the basic plot, so much could be polished and improved.

I read somewhere that Galadriel and Celeborn founded Mirkwood, but I though Mirkwood was Thranduil’s domain?

Correct, that's Thranduil's realm, only the northern part of the forest. Galadriel and Celeborn are in Lorien.

That's interesting.  I had to look his history up on the The One Wiki, and it states a bit of trivia at the bottom of the page that says Tolkien considered for a bit that Glorfindel might have been one of the Blue Wizards, but ultimately decided against it.

"The One Wiki" is generally not considered to be reliable. Notice how they did not provide any citations for that claim.

Theory time! Elrond doesn’t marry Galadriel’s daughter (because that would be creepy and involve a huge time skip) but instead marries Isildur’s sister, who was invented for the show and has blue eyes and dark brown hair like Arwen. Granted, there’d still be a creepy incest angle with Aragorn, but at least this would give Elrond a more sympathetic reason for why he doesn’t want his daughter to marry a human, if he knew what it was like to outlive his own spouse.

Do I expect this to actually happen? Not really. But a little tinfoil never hurt anyone.

OK. Time to set the record straight on Glorfindel.

  • Glorfindel originally appears in the original 1917-1920 Fall of Gondolin. He fights a Balrog, and falls to his death.
  • Tolkien cannibalised the name for The Lord of the Rings decades later. He also cannablised Legolas, BTW.
  • Tolkien pondered: is the Glorfindel of Rings the same as that of Gondolin?
  • After faffing about, Tolkien decided they were the same Glorfindel.
  • This required Glorfindel to have returned to Middle-earth.
  • Cue explanation that he arrived in the Second Age with the Blue Wizards.

And no, he is not Meteor Dude:

  • Meteor Dude's beard counts against him. Yes, Tolkien did portray several Elves as bearded - and there is that famous "second cycle of life" line from the late 1960s, but Scond Age Glorfindel ain't old enough. Third Age Glorfindel is beardless.
  • Glorfindel's name basically alludes to his golden hair. Meteor Dude is not a blond.
  • Glorfindel's still an Elf. The meteor explosion ought to have killed him.
  • Meteor Dude comes across as someone not used to being incarnate. Glorfindel, again, is an Elf, so he wouldn't be struggling like this.

Bah, how I wanted to slap something when Galadriel actually said she was dancing when Celeborn first saw her. We have that for Melian-Thingol and Lúthien-Beren ... why the hell did we need that for Galadriel and Celeborn? Can they not come up with anything new?

And why not go with Tolkien's final version of Celeborn as a Teler from Valinor? She could have told how eager and happy they were when they set out to see the larger world.

Two words: rights issues.

The dancing reference is giving us The Silmarillion without giving us The Silmarillion. An allusion to the text, but not a representation.

It's not as if Tolkien ever settled on a stable version of Galadriel and Teleporno.

Oh, come on, even Jackson referenced Beren and Lúthien. They have the rights to the long poem from LotR. They could talk ten hours about how Beren chanced upon a dancing Lúthien. This is not a Silmarillion reference, it is just dumb and unimaginative.

True enough, that was more about my personal preference. But I find that this version would be the most interesting if she wanted to talk about their relationship.

If I could trade this show for getting Bronwyn to go back to a 3rd season of Counterpart I'd do it in a flash though lol. Still upset that one was cancelled.

Ah, that's where I know her from! Yes, she is very good in Counterpart. Her character in ROP is hopeless though but at least this knowledge helps me to stop blaming the actress.

Anyone else find Disa's greedy/opportunistic turn kind of weird? Doesn't seem like the Disa we've been seeing throughout the show. Which is a pity, since I thought the Durin/Durin and Elrond/Durin scenes were pretty good (healing Mithril aside...)

The shadow fell upon khazad dum as it happened in Numenor. The evil has awakened.

When the first question they answer is about the lack of beards on dwarf women, I don't know if I should take the rest of this seriously. A bunch of easy questions and deflections.

Agreed, nonsense questions.

What I want to hear, more than anything, is their defence of the Elves going extinct next spring with mithril being the cure.

It's just unforgivable.

For the life of me, I don’t know why she’s still walking around in that dress and shawl. It’s incredibly impractical to wear to fight orcs. Surely there must have been a spare pair of pants laying around somewhere?

Does anyone have a link to an explainer for what’s going on with the elves’ extinction and how this differs from the book (unless you’d rather explain yourself)? I’m not very familiar with the lore.

Try this one: https://screenrant.com/why-elves-dying-fading-in-lotr-rings-of-power/

Although at the end it theorizes/hopes that the idea of mithril cointaining the light of the silmarils and restoring immortality is a lie originating from Sauron. Since in the last episode we've seen that it actually can heal the leaf, we will have to conclude that those concepts (completely alien from the books) are show-canon.
