US Politics: Oh Dearie, Dearie me.

Recommended Posts

Who gives a damn about Florida? It's sorta the Elephant's Graveyard for Canadians. Primarily elder Canadians, who grew tired of being polite (or Canadian) go there to pack it in and perish. So if likesay Birdy one day says she wants to fly down to Florida, your reaction shouldn't be to wish her a great vacation, Oh no! You should run into the next church (or religious building of your choice) and light a candle (or whatever your faith demands) and start praying for her.

I don't really give a fuck about defending Florida but you always seem to run your mouth and...Correct me if I'm wrong, but you are German, correct?  Glass houses.

Well, part of it is definitely the GOP's success in employing propaganda about "socialism" to incoming hispanics.  That's measurably worked very well for them in the southern regions of Florida and Texas.  But that sounds horribly paternalistic, at least from a white man, and it's not the primary issue.  It's...maybe that retirement community aging and consequently going hard right?

Because you're right, I don't get it otherwise.  I've never been a fan of "demographics as destiny," but when it comes to Florida it empirically is..off.  Which is, well, at this point I've simply written it off.

I can't find statistics to back up my impression on short notice, but that impression has been that retirees who have moved to Florida in the last decade are more right-wing than average Americans their age. That partly comes from reading or seeing news reports about The Villages, the amazingly fast-growing community in Sumter County northwest of Orlando.

And as the so-called "Big Sort" links politics more closely to lifestyle choices than ever, my impression as a 71-year-old is that people my age who would want to move to Florida, especially to a retirement community where everyone is over 55, are just generally more politically conservative than those of us who don't find that idea attractive. I personally would never want to move to Florida -- too flat and too many bugs-- and don't want to move to a place where there are only old people until I become so decrepit I must move into "assisted living."  My sister and brother-in-law, who are much more politically conservative than I am, live in a Del Webb retirement community in Tennessee and are very happy there. I find where they live comfortable but rather sterile and isolating -- I much prefer living in my Omaha apartment which is in a converted elementary school building built in 1910, three blocks from the zoo where I walk at least five days a week.  I think older people who like living in urban centers and prefer a change of seasons to year-round warmth tend to be more liberal in many aspects of their thinking.

Any way, I have assumed the "problem" with Florida is that its newly arriving retirees are mostly the conservative crime-fearing types from the Midwest and upper South, while more liberal retirees from the Northeast who do move south are actually now more likely to end up in South Carolina or Atlanta instead of Miami.

Yeah, but you know the German tourist industry is advertising with: Germany - We know our past, but at least we are not Florida.

I was under the impression that the more staunch Bay of Pig era Cuban population was being overcome by the more liberal second and third generations.

It is a false impression, because the policies of one foot, then subsidized everything, has continually made Florida The Place for Cubans to go, and more so all the time because there are ever more families with family members there, who already are wired into that community, and increasingly now, since infancy, or early childhood, and born into it.  They are indoctrinated from the gitgo.  Ourselves, helping members of a family with whom we've been deeply connected for decades, have put another child into that system, as the group we were able to get there, from TX and New Mexico, as they came via the Mexico route, had family already in Miami.  There too, the new Cubans are instantly part of a community who 'gets' who they are, where they can converse, and help them find work -- plus all the government benefits.  As many, if not most of these coming in don't believe in government anyway, certainly not since Fidel let go the reins, they don't care either, so are perfectly happy and / or indifferent to our situation with the magas, etc.

And again, for decades, Florida is The Place to go for canceled politicians and criminals, whether drugs, gunrunning, coups, failed elections from everywhere in Latin America -- not to mention where the wealthy go to shop, have second homes and so on.  There are no liberals among these for sure.

And many a 'white native' retiree have never given a damn about government either (such as family members' exes, and so ), beyond being racist and always vaguely rethuglican.  Just don't mess with their social security and medicare.  But they hardly notice this happening either.

For those who were wondering how Prop 22, making Uber drivers and other fig workers contractors instead of employees would work out:

The median wage for gig drivers in CA is $6.20 and hour.

Yeah, the plan worked as inteneded then.

The Transport industry entire is so fucked up and has been for a long time. I had a relative that was a courier and had to leave the job entirely. When gas prices rose their manager's "solution" was to add $1.00 to every delivery.

I think the whole point is to have a worker for about 3 years or so and then the worker goes bankrupt from paying themselves with credit cards. Then they go get another worker. And this now includes jobs like trucker.

Obama openly talked about normalizing relations with Cuba on the campaign trail in Florida and won the state twice. He also managed to successfully dodge the 'socialism' tag, or at the very least not let it drown out his message.

Part of the reason Florida is a lost cause is because the politicians succeeding him havent been particularly great at campaigning. Biden unfortunately was in a position post-Trump/pandemic to take certain measures that are easy to paint as 'socialist', although everyone including older conservatives in Florida have benefited from them.

Let's not forget what immediately happened to Cuba when romper came in and Bolton got his way, thereby increasing the power and influence of the Miami reichlican fascist/nazi/criminal/authoritarian/warmongers on Cuba -- they not only rolled back the Obama policy, but put in far more draconian vengeance on Cuba than was there originally.  Biden's KEPT that, has  no intention of anything else.  This is a major failure that is all on him.

That’s………………………an appalling thought.

And Canadians can’t vote. They don’t become Americans when they go there. Besides, health insurance has become so expensive a lot of people have the US up.

Also, a really big portion of them are from Quebec. These seniors voted for separatists.

I didn't say you did vote. Just wanted to rip a bit on America's Nursery Home turned state.

Anyway... Long post short, even Canadians do no longer want get caught dead in Florida. So there virtually no point for the ongoing existence of that state. How bad must a place be, that Canadians, North America's social workers basically (:leaving:), give upon it.

Ever more Bizarro World: The defense for the fraudster in his NY Fraud Case is everybody knew/knows he was/is a fraudster so therefore it wasn't fraud.

.... "I think the reality is that Trump had such a reputation for being an outlandish, exaggerating liar that his banks knew about this," he explained. "And I've talked to people inside Deutsche Bank, which was the primary lender to Trump over the years, and they were well aware that he was exaggerating his financials and they took steps to markdown his value of assets accordingly."

"And so that's a problem if you're trying to make a fraud claim because everyone knows you're lying and your fraud claim, -- it means you are basically not tricking anyone," Enrich said. "I think it's likely going to be the argument that Trump uses in court."

"Obviously, it's a little bit counter to the image of the public image that Trump tries to project and so, I think the biggest challenge for him in that regard, is that he's going to have to swallow some of his pride, in the courtroom, at least, to make that argument, effectively," he said. "And that's not something I'm sure he will be able to stomach."

You and I could still be arrested for armed robbery even though we used a plastic water pistol. They would throw the book at us the same as if it were a Glock instead of a fake.

In other words, Trump shouldn't get out of his crimes for being a known phony/fake/lying fraudster either.
