UK Politics - Closing Down Sale

There is no coincidence, so someone wanted to project Truss as relatable to the Years and Years PM. The only question is whether that someone thinks it is a positive / desirable association for Truss with a fictional personality, or that someone wanted the association to be negative and did it to troll Truss.

I am reminded, and perhaps with a bit of conspiratorial thinking maybe the dress was motivated by it, of how Piers Morgan spent several minutes interrogating Mick Lynch about his association with a terrorist character from...Thunderbirds(?) because that character's marionette visage appeared as Mick's avatar image on his...Facebook(?) profile.

I wonder, will Piers spend the same amount of time quizzing Truss in the same way, or can it be dismissed because the colour and tailoring aren't identical?

It's funny, but it's been noted that Truss was photographed in that dress before Years and Years filmed, so if anything someone in wardrobe thought it'd be a good idea to nick the detail for the character rather than anyone deciding to model Truss off her.

It is interesting that its really bad to judge female politicians on what they are wearing.. until its a female politician you don't like. Then it's fair game.

It's interesting that there is a difference between judgement that comes from objectification and piss-taking that comes from symbolism that has nothing to do with how she actually looks, albeit the symbolism isn't intentional on her part and it's mostly just a joke.

In other news, holy shit

Nanny-statism. To advise people. ffs.

The media are trotting out stories that energy companies are preparing "contingency plans" to shut off power for 3 hours a day at peak use times if things get as bad as they could. The idea would be that would save immense amounts of power but wouldn't be long enough for, for example, freezers to defrost etc.

Lots of huge issues with that, such as the damage to the economy from people not being able to work, the legal limitations from companies not being able to charge money for the time they are rationing supplies and of course the many thousands of people dependent on medical equipment at home which would not be able to run (I'm assuming hospitals, defence and other essential services would be exempt).

I can only really think of two reasons a govt might want to encourage people to save on energy: 1 because people can't pay their bills, so they could be encouraged to use less energy as a way to lower their bills, if I remember rightly this govt was quite keen on telling people to stop griping about their energy bills and either get a better job or cut down on gas and electricity use; 2 if there is not enough power being generated / gas available to meet the demand and if people don't reduce their power consumption blackouts are likely, it would seem like wisdom not nanny-stateism to tell people to either decrease their power consumption or face blackouts.

Or is there a third reason I'm not thinking about that would qualify as nanny-stateism?

Truss' position is actually completely consistent, if barking. People are responsible for themselves, so it is on them to either make more money or have to use less energy. And the likely fact that the energy companies cannot provide enough energy is nothing for the state to get involved in - let things happen as they will and the free market will sort it out. This is literally how the economic far right think in the UK (and I assume in other countries too).

They can always raise price high enough to price enough customers out of the market. No need for blackouts if you cut enough customers off before the need arises.

Wasn’t rampant inflation, mass strikes, and blackouts what the Tories warned us would happen under Corbyn?

Don't forget about Chaos with Ed Milliband.

Another Tory MP in trouble for being a creepy weirdo and trying it on at the conference with a younger man.

Also he's someone who was apparently a very close ally of Boris Johnson.

LRB - Sub. paywall:

Inside the Thatcher Larp by John Lanchester

Quote

Larping, or live action role play, is a hobby in which people dress up as their preferred fantasy object – elves, goblins, Cavaliers v. Roundheads, Confederates v. Unionists, aliens, victims of a zombie apocalypse, intergalactic adventurers, und so weiter – and collectively participate in a shared imaginative world. Until Liz Truss, no one had ever thought to try Larping as a system of government. But it turns out that we in the UK are living inside a full-scale Thatcher Larp, whether we voted for it or not.  ....

Never fear, all remains traditional and well in merry olde England as the monarchy continues the tradition of vetting any legislation that might possibly effect it's own vast properties and wealth, including rent protections for the tenants in Scotland.  They get to change what they don't like, and still are, Charlie's checking on this in case of Scottish legislation in case it might affect his Balmoral holdings.

Not that we can do much of a job of it here either it seems, but transparency and special privilege for the elite cannot possibly be rescinded as long as all this special privilege depends from a monarchy.
