True Detective Season 2 just over

Oh fuck

Bleaker than the worst nihilist's nightmares. S1 was different and I liked it better but you can't hate S2. It's just too different in scope and you couldn't help but be absorbed by the characters. S3 up next

Quote

Almost 1m British households have given up on the streaming revolution so far this year, as the cost of living crisis forces increasingly budget-conscious consumers to stop taking services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Disney+.

The premiere of two of the most-hyped and expensive shows of all time – the $650m (£580m) productions of Rings of Power and House of the Dragon – failed to prove a big enough draw to reverse a decline of another 234,000 homes with at least one paid streaming service in the third quarter. ....

So many people do. I think it's really good with a few instances of iffy dialogue. loved the vibe and even the highway porn. All the actors do great work.

I think people just weren't looking for neo-noir after that first season. Plus it really needed a re-write or edit to some of the dialogue. I would have preferred if they expanded on Ferral's character's dad having a premonition of his death.

I'll never understand why the kid had the badge at the end, that was just dumb. but it's a minor thing.

On another note I watched The Midnight Club and was disappointed. Too YA-ish for me I think. Plus the terminal illness thing brings real world horror of that into it. Like both cancer and Micheal Meyers are scary, but I have very different reactions to them.

Spoiler

Plus the only story I really liked was the demonic copy one. The noir one was out of place and too rushed to have any impact. The Dusky(?) serial killer one was too drawn out and formulaic. The terminator/video game programmer one was an alright kernel of an idea poorly executed.

I loved episode seven. It was very close to my understanding of "hell/purgatory" as something that happens in the dreaming part of your brain as you die and just feels like it takes forever.

I'll tune in for season two but it's my least favorite thing Flanagan has done so far.

Yup. To me it always felt like they crammed two different stories into one show and it left both wanting. It made me not even want to check out S3 and by most accounts that was a good call.

really? I liked season three of true detective. That's mostly an emotional response though.

To be fair I never gave it a chance and the reviews confirmed what I feared. I was excited by the news of Ali's casting, but that's where my enthusiasm began and died.

Ok ok, Neo Noir was a bit of deviation in S2

And 1 ep of S3 down, its good enough though nowhere near to S1

Nothing ever really comes close to the promise of early season one, but does season one really deliver? a lot of us were hoping for some legit supernatural lovecraftian shit.

Ignoring that I dunno, I still favor the first half. Which makes sense if you've ever tried to write a story usually the first part pours out of you and then you have to find a way to end it. Glenn is great but mr sphagetti neck needed more setup.

You should try it, divorced of whatever else. I think it's a great season of tv.

You and I seem to agree on a lot entertainment wise.

True Detective S1 was great, albeit the ending didn’t live up to the suspense created.  But still great.  S2 was atrocious.  Colin Farrell’s eyebrows and mustache put in some great work but Vince Vaughn was terrible and the others were largely pointless and all the characters felt like miscast tropes.  S3 was better than S2 but ultimately boring and too drawn out.  They tried to return to the brooding bayou suspense of S1 but never recaptured it.  Ali did fine but the writing wasn’t there.

Indeed, we do. I'm open to giving the first episode a chance, but it's gonna be on a long backlist. I still need to finish Breaking Bad, get back to Lost and The Sopranos and decide whether or not to watch Andor and RoP all together, for example, and I'm only a few episodes into The Handmaid's Tale. There's too much content to get through...

That said, Yellowjackets, you can't get here soon enough.

Especially when you're catching up on prestige shows from ten to twenty years ago.

I've still only seen the first season of The West Wing. At least I watched the first episode of the second season of House of Cards. :P

Like I've said before, I watch a ton of movies, but hold out on a lot of T.V. until well after the fact. Has enough time passed for me to watch an episode of the original Quantum Leap?

IIRC, the first episode of season 2 is exactly when (US) House of Cards jumped the shark.  I stopped watching at the end of the second season.  So, you could probably just dispense with that one now.

Latest ep of HotD was pretty good.

Spoiler

The King is dead, long live the King. Except Rhenys should have killed them all right there but didn't do it. I mean she saw a Lord hanging in the great hall, she was held prisoner herself, she knows what is about to happen. Could have saved a lot of lives if she had just said the magic word! Was it just me or did Aegons wife (cant remember her name) seem to nod to Rhenys as if to say "do it"? Didn't care for the Aegon hunt, seemed un necessary. We already know he is depraved and feels unworthy so we wasted a good 15 min of the episode looking for him.

And Larys...oh Larys.... the fetish life.

I had some time and binged all the Andor episodes that have been released and I like it. It's a little darker and more adult version of Star Wars, more like Rogue One which I loved. Now I have to wait for a new episode!
