China Has Opened Up Secret Police Stations in These Countries

Beijing's law enforcement tactics beyond its borders are under scrutiny after a report revealed dozens of cities—including New York—were hosting Chinese overseas police stations.

A pilot program run by the public security bureaus of Fuzhou and Qingtian counties—of coastal Fujian and Zhejiang provinces, respectively—had established 54 "overseas police service centers" across five continents, 25 cities and 21 countries as of June 21, according to Spain-based NGO Safeguard Defenders.

...

In the United States, the report's open-source data indicated one such service center in New York City. In Canada, three were established in Toronto.

In South America, there was one each in Quito and Guayaquil, Ecuador; Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, Brazil; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and Viña del Mar, Chile.

Most of the Chinese overseas police stations were located in Europe, including nine in Spain, the most of any country on the list: three in Madrid, three in Barcelona, two in Valencia and one in Santiago de Compostela.

Italy was hosting the second-most stations in Europe with four: Rome, Milan, Florence and Prato.

In France, three service centers were operating out of Paris. Portugal also hosted one each in Porto, Lisbon and Madeira. In United Kingdom, the report found two in London and one in Glasgow.

The Netherlands was hosting two such centers in Amsterdam and Rotterdam, respectively, while the Czech Republic had two in Prague. Budapest, Hungary, also had two, one for each of the Fuzhou and Qingtian police bureaus—a common phenomenon across Europe.

European countries each hosting only one Chinese police station included Dublin, Ireland; Bratislava, Slovakia; Frankfurt, Germany; Athens, Greece; Stockholm, Sweden; Vienna, Austria; Odessa, Ukraine; and Belgrade, Serbia.

In Africa, Benin City, Nigeria; Maseru, Lesotho; and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, each hosted one.

In Asia, at least one police center was operating out of Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia; Sirdaryo, Uzbekistan; Bandar Seri Begawan, Brunei; Tokyo, Japan; and Phnom Penh, Cambodia...

First of all, how very dare they ignore us like this. Like, Sweden gets one, but not us? The indignity!

I think the article suggests there are probably more, so I'm confident Norway wasn't left out!

Conspicuous that nearest neighbors and friends-former foes or vice versa Pakistan, India and Sri Lanka are missing.

My view on cultural/religious holidays is that a certain number of days for cultural / religious festivals should be provided for but not fixed in the calendar, and people should be allowed to take those days as holidays according to their own cultural and religious practices. The only specified dates for public holidays should be those that are explicitly connected to the history and establishment of the country / state / city.

We have 5 religious/cultural holidays in our calendar and we have 7 other holidays. So for us that would mean 5 flexi-public holidays and 7 fixed public holidays. I don't think it would be too disruptive to have just 5 days out of the year where people take different statutory days, especially since the vast majority of people will take days that are fixed in known cultural and religious calendars, like Diwali, Eid, Hanukkah, Darwin's birthday etc.

With working form home being quite standard in non-public-facing / non-factory settings it's possible for offices to close on the traditional cultural / religious holidays, like Christmas, but for those who celebrate different festivals to still be able to work.

That's pretty much how my workplace does it: standard public holidays as per the countries we operate in (we operate in over a 100, for context), and a number of flexi holidays that people can take for Diwali, Eid, Chinese New Year etc. Of course, there is an overlap between 'country public' and 'religious/cultural' depending on where you are but in the main, it's fair and works well.

So, things in Brazil the last couple of weeks have been even crazier than usual (and that's saying something).

Lula started the previous week making a conversion to right wing preacher- saying he's against the right to abortion (when he previously said he was in favor many times, not that he actually did much or anything to advance legislation when he was in office), that he doesn't want a Cuba-style control of the press (even though he's been pushing the issue of "social control" of the press for decades), and that unissex bathrooms are an invention of Satan.

He also refused to say who will be his Economy minister, which is understandably making markets nervous. When he needed someone to write an article about his economic ideas earlier this year, he chose Guido Mantega, who was Economy minister between 2005-14 and is often considered the worst in Brazil's history, in part because he also used his job to act as Lula and Dilma Rousseff's campaign treasurer. If he or someone close to him is selected, it could be enough to make the markets crash by itself and confirm the fears of Lula's worst critics.

Momentum seemed to be in Bolsonaro's favor, specially since Lula decided to skip on two debates, allowing Bolsonaro to turn it into interviews and attack without reply.

Then on Sunday an ally of Bolsonaro, Roberto Jefferson , had his arrest ordered for violating his house arrest terms by calling a Supreme Court/Electoral Court member "a witch" and "a prostitute".

When Federal Police showed up to arrest him he answered with guns and throwing grenades

4 police officers were injured, and while Bolsonaro was quick to call him a criminal and demand him to go to jail, Jefferson only surrendered after the Justice minister came in person to negotiate it (which, as you can imagine, wouldn't happen to a common criminal, and wouldn't be a surprise if it was a demand of Jefferson himself or Bolsonaro's allies).

If you follow Brazilian politics, Jefferson is a familiar name. He was a congressman and supporter of Lula that had an ally caught on camera taking bribes that were going to his pocket. Facing prison and being expelled from Congress, he decided to go on the offensive and reveal the Mensalão scandal in which, in summary, Congressmen would received a big monthly "allowance" in order to vote for the government in key votes.

When much later, after serving time for corruption (a ridiculous short one, as is it's usually the case in Brazil), he became a Bolsonaro ally and begun to spout far-right wing non-sense, most people (myself included) just assumed he didn't mean it and was merely using this as a way to increase his popularity among far-right wingers, but became increasingly clear, following his prison and a cancer, he really went off the deep end, and begun to attack the Supreme Court and other Bolsonaro targets and promoting violence, and he was formally accused in an inquiry against anti-democratic acts and attacks by the SC.

At the same time, while his crimes are absolutely clear, the inquiry in which he was being accused is blatantly unconstitutional, and as I said before, the Supreme Court gave itself power to investigate those anti-democratic attacks in a law created by the military dictatorship, which is suspicious in itself. And the very first act they did in these inquiry was suspend a magazine for publishing about possible corruption involving it's then president, even though the reports were entirely true.

That Jefferson incident seemed that would kill Bolsonaro's chances, although polls don't seemed to have changed much. Lula leads nearly all of them, but in most cases within the margin of error, and Bolsonaro's strength was underestimated in polls for the first round.

Anyway, unfortunately Brazil leads to a worst case scenario now, because a Bolsonaro win would allow him and his supporters to feel validated about all of his actions and present himself as the guy that beat the system, and have a 2nd term with a more favorable Congress, while a narrow defeat would allow him to present a narrative of election fraud and how he was sabotaged by the Supreme and the Electoral Court (specially considering that, as I pointed out, some of the criticisms about Judicial interference and overreach are valid) and allow him to keep himself in the political game.

At the same time, for all of Bolsonaro's many flaws, this is a problem created in part by the left- some polls estimate that about half of Bolsonaro's voters choose him only for rejection of Lula, if they had chosen to rally around a candidate that was not a corrupt, vile POS himself, this election would probably be decided already.

Almost 1,000 references to dehumanising misogyny or violent action are recorded each day in the “incelosphere” as the toxicity of male supremacist content continues to intensify.

Analysis of the incel movement found that online references to inflicting violence and extremely degrading language on dedicated incel forums are running eight times higher than in 2016, when researchers first began tracking misogynist content on the internet.

Academics from the University of Exeter also noted an increasing overlap between incel followers and the far right, with online algorithms blamed for pushing young boys towards extreme rightwing ideology. ....

.... Incels have been linked to violent extremism and are classified by the government’s anti-radicalisation strategy, Prevent, as having a “mixed, unstable or unclear” ideology.

The most recent data reveals that such ideologies account for more than half of all referrals to Prevent.

Brace, a lecturer in data analysis at Exeter, said: “The incelosphere is definitely growing and diversifying and has increased in the toxicity of its discussions since 2016.

“The cross pollination of ideologies is helping to drive this.”

He singled out YouTube whose content recommendation algorithms, he claimed, had in the past pushed users “towards increasingly extreme content; particularly in the case of anti-woman/feminist content”. ....

Is this connected to anything in this thread or recent events? Or just a random thing you saw on the internet

It's an international story in a thread about international events. No need to get your knickers in a twist. Is there a particular reason this story triggers you?

Other than the typical espousing of sympathy for the violent ideology within incel culture crossed with misogyny (and an unhealthy obsession with Zorral).

Some real bad news in Brazil where the police appear to be teaming with the military to simply stop people from voting at the orders of bolsonaro.

Yes, while there's no actual stopping of people to vote, and with the amount of victims in car crashes in Brazil there's legitimate reasons to do this kind of operations 365 days of the year, it's clear what's the real purpose. They are not being done only in the rural Northeast (which is pretty much as much Lula country as rural South in the US is Republican), but they're disproportionately done there, basically to just annoy people and make them give up, or have them arrive late and give up because of the lines.

Come on, silly.

You don't really mean to say on this board that violence advocated against women, sexual slavery for women, ARE NOT INTERNATIONAL CONCERNS?  Are you?

Of course, again, reading by the toddler, whose underwear is permanently in wodge, particularly about women, immigrants and any other Others, including the elderly, wasn't committed. the report clearly states that this movement is moving international and associating with extremist authoritarian violent movements everywhere.

With around 90% of the votes tallied, Lula leads by 1%, still extremely close to call.

Meanwhile, in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite became the first openly gay candidate to be elected governor (when he was elected in 2018, he hadn't come out yet). He also became the first governor in history to be elected to a 2nd term in the state (reelection is allowed since 1998).

He was running against one of Bolsonaro's closest allies, who led in the first round, but end up falling behind in the 2nd, partially because of some homophobic attacks, partially because of anti-vaccine non-sense. He probably ended up hurting Bolsonaro there- he won there, but probably by a smaller rate than needed to win reelection to compensate Lula's advantage in the Northeast.
