Yeah, you guys have had your expectations properly fucked with if you think that's 'flabby' ffs.

I think it's an arms race started by Chrises Hemsworth and Evans in their MCU movies, coz it's a pretty recent trend to expect everyone to look like that: Hugh Jackman in the first X-Men was if anything probably less toned than Tenoch Huerta in this, but nobody batted an eyelid back then, because he was clearly still in ridiculous shape. Now he'd be in 'bad shape'. Heck, Christian Bale's Batman probably wouldn't be up to scratch by these standards.

Give Bale another 20 lbs and he was looking pretty superhero-correct in American Psycho. Also, remember that Bale's last film before Batman Begins was The Machinist. Gotta love the commitment, but all that yo-yo-ing of his weight can't good for him in the long run.

Yeah but I mean that's just not true.

I think it absolutely is true.

This is Daniel Craig at 52 years old:

He is still clearly in very good shape, low body fat, decent muscle mass. Not quite his Casino Royale best but hes still got it. Even when he was younger and wasn't even training Craig was always in decent shape.

Now compare and contrast to Namor in just the few times in the movie where they don't try and obscure him using darkness, clothes or cgi

There is no comparison really. Yeah it sucks the guy didn't have enough time to get to comparable shape that other actors can get to, which is why they gave him massive high waisted swimming shorts to hide his belly and almost never show him dead on full length if they can help it.

This isn't bashing the guy, it's just so strange that they went this way, when actors are given many months to get into shape. For instance Kumail Nanjiani put in a lot of time and work to get in pretty incredible shape for Eternals (probably didn't need to tbh but still)

From everything I've read, a lot more emphasis was put on water- and swimming-related exercise than on more conventional cardio or fat loss, which results in a slightly different body appearance, given the different priority, focus, training, etc. Though there was some weight training involved as well. If anything, his body shape feels a lot more familiar and realistic to me than the excessively jacked sizes of Thor, Captain America, etc.

That sort of training would make sense if you were training to appear in a movie about a real life long distance swimmer, or you actually wanted to be a swimmer.

Which is why its a bizarre choice given he had to appear in a movie about superheroes, in which he barely has to do any swimming at all (most scenes where hes even under the water he's either just floating, and potentially its just a CG model that barely moves)

The lack of realism is the point! These are not characters being depicted as realistic. Thor is a larger than life superhero, Captain America is ultra jacked because he's a super soldier. These are not depicting average humans who lift 3 times a week and do the occasional bit of cardio.

So if you start throwing in characters who do just look like average joe on a beach holiday after a winter of carbs, it really stands out.

At this point, I almost wonder if it wouldn’t be better to just reboot the MCU after secret wars and start fresh for X/F4 with no weight of prior films. :dunno:

I know they won't do it this way but I think it would be better for the X-Men films if they were in their own universe rather than trying to crowbar them into the MCU. I thought that some of the other recent films like Eternals didn't really gain anything from being in the MCU and had to waste time on putting it little references to the earlier films.

Fantastic 4 is probably easier to integrate into the MCU, although again they could have it in the same universe at the X-Men films.

The problem is that Fantastic Four is utter trash as a concept and the only thing that makes it good is Dr. Doom. And Dr. Doom could easily be taken outside of FF.

FF's powers are lame, the characters are not particularly interesting and largely redundant with respect to existing Marvel characters, the fanbase is old and not particularly loyal...it's just bleh. Maybe a good indie director and writer can do something with it that's better (similar to Gunn and GotG) but chances are that they can't.

I don't know. The Fantastic Four were pretty interesting when they were the villains in Planetary...

Yeah, I guess if you want to make FF the secret rulers of the world and total scumbags that'd be a way to go. You could also go the Venture Brothers route and make them really funny and poke holes at their shitty powers. But taking them seriously? Meh.

Didn't bother me in the least, or come to my attention at all.
