If Musk can find a way to break the incentive structures and stop elevating 'stupid shit some guy down the pub says' then I'm all for it.

That's assuming he wants to make things better, when everyxthing he's said and done points to him wanting more dis- and misinformation, more hate speech etc.

And yet there has been no change to moderation policy.

When will Matt Walsh get suspended for misgendering someone on Twitter or spreading misinformation about children’s hospitals?

Should he be?

Firing the leadership and riffing the trust/verification group sends a different message. What exactly as Musk done to engender such trust as to take him at face value?

I wager Musk may be waiting until after the mid terms to see how far he could go in terms playing to the far right.

Surely if Musk believes the Twitter was not free speech enough, as one of his stated aims for buying twitter in the first place was to increase the freedom of speech on the platform would seem to indicate, one should expect that he will facilitate more bullshit being posted on Twitter, not less.

For free speech the importance of not allowing the govt to restrict speech is so that truth is not suppressed. For the private sector the importance of facilitating free speech is so that inconvenient truths can be drowned in a sea of bullshit.

Isn't that just ... well, call it for what it is: terrifying.

I don't receive anything from youtube anywhere.  Maybe because I go for very specific somethings.  And when putting up a 'tube, one can disable comments too.  I don't own a Youtube channel, but Partner does.  I don't have a subscription to it either.

Also per reports the moderation policy has already changed. Twitter moderators lost access to their tools over the weekend and most of them did not have them restored. Porn is being spread significantly more widely. Requests for investigation are taking much longer if they're responded to at all.

I’ve noticed this. Come to think of it, there’s been a significant spike in both literal and metaphorical porn.

So that's what Musk wanted, easier access to subscription-free porn. It all makes so much sense now.

Just in case anyone was wondering, Trump Is Not Actually Dead.

I will only believe he wasn't replaced by a Russian spambot personified in 2016 if he opens his chest live on stage and shows us a beating, organic heart.

MORE widely? How much more widely could it be spread on Twitter? They’ve  never done anything about porn on the platform.

They had been doing quite a bit. Just not enough to stop it.

But now it's increased significantly per reports. Probably not that big a deal save that it will hurt advertising.

No they really don't.  They have always been incredibly lax about porn on their platform, especially in comparison to other platforms. In fact the NSFW content on the platform has been growing

The number of heavy users interested in NSFW and cryptocurrency content grew, the research found.

Twitter is one of the few major social media platforms that permits nudity on its service, and the company has estimated that adult content constitutes 13% of Twitter, according to a separate internal slide presentation seen by Reuters. The presentation did not elaborate on how the figure was calculated.

I find the dominance of Twitter discussion in the US politics thread rather weird.  Its importance to modern politics is wildly overstated.  A majority of heavy power users who spend most of their time using it for politics are dubious that it has any real impact on changing minds. It's basically a tool  that's very good for elite messaging to their constituents and consequent formation of information bubbles, but not too much else.

It's an ecosystem that essentially feeds off itself. All journalists use twitter, put information out on twitter and get information from twitter. The news stories we see every day are often fuelled by conversations had on twitter. Arguments and disagreements on policy, culture etc often start somewhere on twitter and spread out.

It is also very much disconnected from most people's lives, and it's own bubble, which a lot of people don't tend to understand.

Yeah I was thinking the same, it seems like it would be worthy of it's own thread rather than falling under this one.
