NFL 2022 Thread 3: Is Captain Kirk... good?!!?

That's the sad part though, those skits are excellent and Chappelle's earlier work was top notch. But I'm not sure he's said anything funny in the last decade outside of a random joke here and there and his entire read on society and what he's basing his stuff on is just, at best, idiotic.

Chappelle definitely insists upon himself now. Was gonna rip into him a little like you did, but didn’t wanna derail the thread. Too late I guess.

I was also at the Oddball festival in Hartford some years back when he decided to not do his set because some dickheads fans in the front rows hurt his feelings, or something. So that was annoying.

But all that doesn’t take away from his earlier work. It was classic.

I feel like the AFC is increasingly looking like a two team race between Buffalo and Cincy.  Yes I know KC still exists and they're always dangerous, but that team looks much more vulnerable than they have the past two years, and they didn't win those years either.  Both the defense and the offensive skill group do not instill a lot of confidence and Kelce and Mahomes alone are not enough to win a SB.  Other than those three, everybody else is either fading (Miami, NYJ, Tennessee) or too injured to realistically challenge (BAL, LAC).

The NFC is more like a three team race, as Dallas, Philly and SF stand well ahead of the rest.  If Purdy is indeed better than Tim Rattay then they could absolutely win (they probably have the best non-qb talent in the league).  Dallas is held back by McCarthy coaching and they are very up and down.  If they're playing up to their potential, they could beat SF and PHI on consecutive weekends, but I don't know that I expect it.  They also could lose at home against a middling WC team.  Hurts is injured (hopefully not too badly) which makes it harder to really trust Philly, but all they do is win, and unlike Minnesota they do it in dominant fashion much of the time.  NYG and TEN are not SB contenders, but they're decent enough and Philly manhandled them both.

I'd say the NFC is now a two team race, Philly and SF.  Dallas is losing players every week. 5 def starters are out. The def had depth but now those guys are having to be the man instead of the guy that gives the man a break.

Chappelle lived long enough to see himself become Clayton Bigsby.

KC is capable of beating anyone. Bills lost their top pass rusher and Bengals lost their top two pass rushers plus 4 hurt corners. If KC gets either team with those injuries, anything can happen. And I think the emergence of McKinnon as an offensive weapon makes them dangerous. Their defense will be the issue but definitely capable of going on the run on the back of Mahomes arm.

Next few weeks are going to be awesome. KC has the inside track to #1 seed but anything could happen.

Kirk as a non-replacement Pro Bowl selection is hilarious and also a sign of just how much better the AFC is at the position right now. Geno also being selected makes it comedy gold.

I was kinda surprised Kittle made it considering he's having a pretty down year receiving-wise (last Thursday notwithstanding), but then I looked at the competition.  Pretty surprised Hufanga made it too, although I have no idea about his competition.

I want to say they just picked names they knew, but then the Vikings long snapper made it and I couldn't tell you who that guy was if he told me his name after shaking my hand. :dunno:

Biggest surprise for me was Turpin making it. I spend a considerable amount of time messaging during the game when he tries to run back every damn kick off and doesn't even get to the 20 yard line. I'm wanting to bench his ass and he makes pro bowl? Shows why I don't do this for a living.

Or maybe it shows why they shouldn’t do this for a living.

Let's be clear here, the top 1% of sports journalists are great at what they do, but beyond that most educated sports fans who are confident communicators could do the job.

So we are out visiting my in-laws and my wife's friends in British Columbia this week, and tonight we are at a place with the Thursday Night Football game on a big screen.  I can't hear it, but I do occasionally glance at the game, not realizing that it is an NFL game.

I thought it was a college or Canadian football game, because at first glance, it doesn't look AT ALL like an NFL broadcast.

The uniforms are incredibly Junior Varsity - one team entirely in white, and the other entirely in black.  These are NFL teams dressed like some directional state university on the TV in prime time.  Furthermore, the NY Jets are dressed in black.

What?  The Jets are supposed to be in Mr. Yuck Green and white.

I realize that a lot of expansion teams have bad uniforms (Texans, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, Jaguars, the Purple Browns, Tennessee), but the Jets have an actual identity.  Just that their identity doesn't include all-black uniforms.

Throwback uniforms for teams with a real history are fine.  Green Bay rocks up with all kinds of lichen-themed strips, and the Steelers had the truly awesome bumblebees once a year for a while.  But these single-color uniforms don't feel very professional grade to me.

We started betting this year.  Not that anyone is interested but we bet 6 games per week, always the under dog.  So far we are just about breaking even and have been in the 'black' maybe 2x.  It's entertaining and our bets are very small.  We have experimented with several ways of making picks, reading PFT and reviewing all the 'expert' picks as well as throwing the team names into a paper bag.  We've found no discernable difference in outcome between researching the picks v. the paper bag method.  Ahem.

NFL sides are generally considered to be the most efficient market in US sports betting, so the random method being competitive makes sense.  The amount of analysis needed to get an edge beyond the current sharps that set the market is basically unobtainable from a start up.  Look for less efficient markets, if you want to make a profit.

If you want to just have a sweat on the games you watch, at least look at an app that aggregrates odd from all sportbooks so you can at least pay the least vig.  I use betstamp but there are several others as well.  Pay less vig.

I had a free bet which I put in a parlay including a JAX defensive touchdown.  (I believe in Zach, what can I say?)  Got to say, when Lawrence got strip sacked on the first possesion I was rooting for the D to take it to the house, until I figured out the color scheme.

Soooo… I know it’s early yet… but Wilson really does feel like he’s going in the Heath Shuler/Jamarcus Russell/Josh Rosen pile, doesn’t he?

Dude barely played anyone in college and had an NFL caliber offensive line.  He was always a mirage.

I gambled on him in a few dynasty leagues, but only because I know that I am not infallible (plus, QB is a particularly difficult position to evaluate even for NFL scouts who are a lot more knowledgeable than I am) and so often take chances on guys I don't like as prospects.  Ah well, you win some, you lose some.

I recall Wilson's meteoric rise throughout the (college football) season and was figuring the Niners could scoop him up with their pick in the middle of the first round -- no trade necessary.  IIRC, that's where he was at even at the end of the season.  Then the pre-draft cycle hit and it became clear he was going second and I was like f that s.
