The Russians don’t have anything like the ability to reinforce their troops in Transnistria… right?

As far as I understand it's mostly local lads with a Russian passport anyway. So on the one hand, they are anchored in the local community, but on the other, maybe they remember their Moldovan passport?

(And for some weird reason, auto correct proposed Lada, when I tried to write lad. Hope that's not an omen...)

It is interesting to see the satellite images of Engels and notice that the entire base appears to be open air, without even revetments for the aircraft.

Russian military logistics and infrastructure are certainly afterthoughts, or else they just never believed that attacking an immediate neighbor could put their own bases into the war zone.

Two Russian airbases hit far inside Russian territory (Saratov and Ryazan, not far from Moscow). The Russians have played down the damage and claimed the attacks were carried out with Russian weapons seized by Ukraine. There seems to be massive scepticism about that on both Ukrainian and Russian channels. Some reports that several bombers were put out of commission.

Russia launched another massive missile attack on Ukraine today but Ukraine's air defences seem to have had their best day ever, shooting down almost all of the missiles. Only 10 got through and caused mostly light damage, although Odesa was left without power for most of the day. US and UK intelligence are indicating that Russia has exhausted its supply of Iranian suicide drones and is waiting for a resupply. Moldova was hit by debris that spilled over the border though, and is suffering intermittent blackouts as it is partially dependent on the Ukrainian power grid. New connections with the Romanian power grid have been authorised but work doesn't seem to have started yet.

Moscow released footage today of Putin driving a vehicle across the Crimea Bridge, but unclear when this was filmed.

Wert (or anyone else) how realistic do you think it would be for Moldova to retake Transnistria by force this coming spring?  I know they don't have much of a military, but at this point neither does Russia (they have no way of resupplying anything there, because it's right on the border with Ukraine).  In general countries are usually pretty keen on retaking territory that has been occupied within their borders, and I have trouble believing the Moldovan govt feels any different.  Not to mention the not-so-subtle indications that Russia intended to conquer Moldova last year after they crushed Ukraine.

Hmm. Moldova is not a very belligerent nation and its military is tiny and not very heavily-armed. I can't see them launching any kind of attack.

However, for years it's been suggested that Transnistria is not very happy about its lot and the support it gets from Russia (basically jack shit), and there have been some signs that Transnistria would be happy to join a federated arrangement with Moldova (and possibly both with Romania) to retain its autonomy whilst also growing its economy. I doubt the Transnistrians are very happy with Russia's performance in the war and various attempts to get them to join the conflict by invading Ukraine (which would be so laughably easily defeated that there's zero appetite for it there). So I think a Moldovan military effort might be unlikely, but some kind of negotiated end to the frozen border conflict there is maybe more viable than it was last year.

In Ukraine related news. Hungary is blocking EU funds going to Ukraine. All member states have to agree to the transfer, and Hungary is apparently blocking it in a thinly veiled blackmail attempt to block EU sanctions wrt to corruption and rule of law issues.

The EU needs to expel Hungary.

Does the EU have a mechanism to expel countries?

Short answer. No.

Longer answer:

While there's no expulsion mechanism (construction error of the EU) Article 7 of the EU treatie deals with the suspension of the member states right. However this requires unanimity (bar the state the in question obviously). As long as Poland and Hungary provide cover for each other, there's no way to deal with those two states.

Well given that Poland is one of the more hawkish countries on Ukriane hopefully they can pressure Hungary into folding.

No ways, they would lose their own cover.

We have general election next year, which according to polls current government should lose (or at least win by not enough margin to form a government again). If that's the case (hopefully), we won't need Hungary's cover anymore, because we will start reverting PiS's wrongdoings ourselves.

You vote them out, and I believe. I am not saying you're sorta Europe's Florida (189)*, where it looks like you might vote for Democracy, only to vote bunch of right wing populist dingbats in, but you kinda are.

*I am not sure, does this count as Florida joke or is this more of Poland joke?
