Variety, in advance, wrote this: Quote “Since Taylor Swift premiered her short film ‘All Too Well’ last winter in New York, Variety has been impressed with her vision as a director,” said Variety co-editor-in-chief Ramin Setoodeh. “We are delighted she is part of this lineup with James Cameron, Ryan Coogler, Gina Prince-Bythewood and the other most daring, accomplished directors of the year.” I haven't seen the response to the episode. I haven't watched it, even though I was interested in what McDonagh has to say. Pity... I was hoping for Todd Field, but alas he is notoriously uninterested in doing these things. Ran
Key Huy Quan feels like a total shoe-in for best supporting actor at the Globes and the Academy Awards, I have to say. He's nearly swept the critics' associations awards. The Taylor Swift thing is blatant pandering to get a mass audience and attention. As far as I know they've never placed a short film director in one of these things, near as I can recall. In all likelihood, Swift's people offered her up to them because she's probably campaigning for the Short Film academy award to close in on the EGOT, and they couldn't pass up the publicity. ETA: I've seen a lot of praise for Aftersun.

ETA: I've seen a lot of praise for Aftersun. Yes, Quan is sweeping the critics' awards and he is probably the safest bet of acting categories. Blanchett and Yeoh are splitting the regionals, but Cate has won NYFCC and LAFCA and is probably the best contender for NSFC, which would complete the coveted critics' trifecta. Blanchett has no narrative this year, save brilliant performance. Not sure if that is enough, but Sir Anthony Hopkins won against Chadwick Boseman and Boseman had the ultimate narrative. It will be interesting to see how Yeoh vs Blanchett will turn out. Best Actor is still between Butler, Farrell and Fraser and I would give Farrell a bit of advantage, although none can be excluded. Best Supporting Actress is a bloodbath and no one knows what Top5 will be. As for Swift, yeah, I agree. The film Twitter was outraged. Can't say I am surprised, I most surely won't watch it, but it is just one of those things that are becoming normal. 2 hours ago, Cashless Society said: The writers roundtable has also been available for a while.
