In the few months, various award-giving bodies will give out golden statuettes, culminating the season with Academy Awards on March, 12th, 2023. The year behind us was full of great movies, but the industry has been recovering from the pandemic and cinema business seems to be in war with steaming services. Will the Oscar, as the most prestigious movie award in the world, keep its relevance in the world where awarded movies draw earn less and less money at box offices. But, it is what it is and the debate among cinemagoers and industry workers will certainly be one of the hot topics in the upcoming months. Per usual, I will be updating this thread with each new award as they come - first the most important critics awards and then the televised awards. It was organized in 1935 and gathers 30 New York-based film critics. In December, they give their annual NYFCC Awards which represent one of three "film critics trifecta" awards. Among critics circles, they are considered among the most prestigious. The winners of this year's NYFCC Awards: Spoiler Best Film:Tár Best Director:S. S. Looking at the list makes me realize I haven't seen really anything this year..which, thinking about it for two seconds, should have been reflexively obvious to me. Spoiler 6 has the beautiful visuals, but I'm thinking 10 with Serkis is going to be pretty solid. As to House of the Dragon, it has to be 8, I'd think, or maaaaybe 10. I have noticed the same with my visits to local movie theatre. Between COVID and streaming services, I rarely go to cinema, save perhaps for latest Marvel movie or some other blockbuster. It is sad though, as many of these movies are truly brilliant. As for Spielberg, same reaction... And I have seen the movie. Probably more annoying than idea of Spielberg winning another Oscar is perhaps the idea Michelle Williams winning an Oscar this year in a category of truly inspiring choices. I suppose that boils down to the throne room scene vs. the dragon fight. The dragon fight was really well done, and not just as "spectacle." The direction and suspense were really top notch. Some people will likely go for the finale. Most nominations tend to be finales, which is why I think episode 10 of House of the Dragon will likely get it, though episode 8 was the best written and acted. Ran Posted December 3, 2022 Share Posted December 3, 2022 A lot of the movies haven't even bee released in Sweden yet -- Tár is apparently not showing up until March(!), The Banshees of Inishirien is opening in late January. Definitely interested in seeing both. On the list above, I've seen three films: Everything Everywhere All at Once (a very good film that is still somehow wildly overrated by the internet), Elvis (good-ish but uneven, Austin Butler does a surprisingly good job, inventive editing as you'd expect from Luhrman), and Triangle of Sadness (not as good as The Square). I use them for logistic purposes only, not to make posts extra lengthy. So, yeah... Explaining NBR is a bit difficult. They are notoriously unpredictable and weird with their choices. But, as for category placements, it is very simple - if you are in one, you can't be in another. Top Gun being named a Best Film means he will not be in Top Ten movies of the year (it's 1+10 situation). Also, movie being listed in Top 10 makes it ineligible for International/Documentary/Independent list. Interestingly enough, RRR is not India's submission this year, which means it won't be nominated for Best International Feature.
