FILM AWARDS SEASON 2022/2023 (Update: Guilds' Winners, Oscar week)

Hello, everyone...

Senior members may remember how much I like December as the beginning of the film and TV awards season. In the few months, various award-giving bodies will give out golden statuettes, culminating the season with Academy Awards on March, 12th, 2023. The year behind us was full of great movies, but the industry has been recovering from the pandemic and cinema business seems to be in war with steaming services. Will the Oscar, as the most prestigious movie award in the world, keep its relevance in the world where awarded movies draw earn less and less money at box offices. But, it is what it is and the debate among cinemagoers and industry workers will certainly be one of the hot topics in the upcoming months.

Per usual, I will be updating this thread with each new award as they come - first the most important critics awards and then the televised awards. The schedule is following:

Spoiler

December, 2nd - New York Film Critics Circle (NYFCC)

December, 11th - Los Angeles Film Critics Association Awards (LAFCA)

December, 12th - Golden Globe nominations (HFPA)

December, 14th - Critics Choice Association nominations (CCA)

January, 10th - Golden Globe Awards (HFPA)

January, 11th - Screen Actors Guild Awards nominations (SAG)

January, 15th - Critics’ Choice Awards (CCA)

January, 19th - EE BAFTA Film Awards nominations (BAFTA)

January, 24th - Oscar Nominations (AMPAS)

February, 23rd - EE BAFTA Film Awards (BAFTA)

February, 25th - Producers Guild of America Awards (PGA)

February, 26th - Screen Actors Guild Awards (SAG)

March, 4th - Film Independent Spirit Awards

March, 5th - Writers Guild of America Awards (WGA)

March, 12th - 95th Academy Awards (AMPAS)

Per usual, there are already some frontrunners in main categories (Picture, Director, Adapted and Original Screenplay, Actress, Actor, Supporting Actress and Actor and Cinematography). Given that we have entire December in front of us and that we didn't get to major precursors, speaking about certain frontrunners seems silly. However, I will post lists of at least 10 possible nominations for each category, so you would get the idea what the Oscar pundits are watching these days. The lists are taken from Gold Derby website and represent current rankings.

Thanks for this.  Looking at the list makes me realize I haven't seen really anything this year..which, thinking about it for two seconds, should have been reflexively obvious to me.  Even though I haven't seen it, Spielberg/The Fabelmans atop the lists is eyeroll inducing.

I don't know about all the movies in general, but it has been a good year for SFF movies and TV shows. I'm compiling a list to nominate stuff for the Hugos.

For short form, which Andor episode would one go for?

Spoiler

6 has the beautiful visuals, but I'm thinking 10 with Serkis is going to be pretty solid.

As to House of the Dragon, it has to be 8, I'd think, or maaaaybe 10.

Well, this does seem to be the problem with the "grown-up" cinema. I have noticed the same with my visits to local movie theatre. Between COVID and streaming services, I rarely go to cinema, save perhaps for latest Marvel movie or some other blockbuster. It is sad though, as many of these movies are truly brilliant.

As for Spielberg, same reaction... And I have seen the movie. Probably more annoying than idea of Spielberg winning another Oscar is perhaps the idea Michelle Williams winning an Oscar this year in a category of truly inspiring choices.

Personally, rooting for TAR and EEAAO, all the way :D

I suppose that boils down to the throne room scene vs. the dragon fight.  The dragon fight was really well done, and not just as "spectacle."  The direction and suspense were really top notch.  But..I'd lean towards the throne room scene even if 8 didn't also have the awesome awkward dinner party in the back half.

For Andor, definitely 10. Some people will likely go for the finale. Most nominations tend to be finales, which is why I think episode 10 of House of the Dragon will likely get it, though episode 8 was the best written and acted.

A lot of the movies haven't even bee released in Sweden yet -- Tár is apparently not showing up until March(!), The Banshees of Inishirien is opening in late January. Definitely interested in seeing both. On the list above, I've seen three films: Everything Everywhere All at Once (a very good film that is still somehow wildly overrated by the internet), Elvis (good-ish but uneven, Austin Butler does a surprisingly good job, inventive editing as you'd expect from Luhrman), and Triangle of Sadness (not as good as The Square).

Banshees will be available on HBO Max mid-December, and you have TÁR on Prime and Apple TV. Those are home alternatives before cinema. I know many international cinephiles were outraged by late releases worldwide. Alas, we have streaming services.

Tár's not streaming here yet, at least. I hope Banshees will be available on that date, but no idea.

Top Gun is the best film, but it's not on the top 10 films list further down. That list contains RRR, which asaik, is an Indian film, but it's not on the top 5 international films list.

First, no need for spoiler brackets. I use them for logistic purposes only, not to make posts extra lengthy.

So, yeah... Explaining NBR is a bit difficult. They are notoriously unpredictable and weird with their choices.  But, as for category placements, it is very simple - if you are in one, you can't be in another. Top Gun being named a Best Film means he will not be in Top Ten movies of the year (it's 1+10 situation). Also, movie being listed in Top 10 makes it ineligible for International/Documentary/Independent list.

Interestingly enough, RRR is not India's submission this year, which means it won't be nominated for Best International Feature. However, that doesn't mean it can't be nominated for Best Motion Picture as many are hopeful it will make into 10.

Speechless

Don't tell me so many in the west found that garbage film-award worthy and all.

Nope being in the top 10 is silly and honestly I've heard way more people say Elvis is shit with one great performance than merely call the film good.
