Was Jibaro not eligible in the animated short category?

The Love Death + Robots shorts fall under the Emmys as television rathe than films.

I was at my barber the other morning as the noms were being announced.  We both were confused at an animated short titled “My Year of Dicks.”

Neither of us wanted to Google it to find out what it was though.

Try googling cinematographer Dick Poop, sorry Dick Pope :D

One of the most memorable gaffes in history of Oscar nomination mornings.

TG:M didn't get a nom for cinematography? Wow.

Fabelmans: Spielberg. Movie about the art of movie making. It's in the script. Haven't seen it. I remember he got nominated for The Post, which was a movie he basically shat out while he was in post production on Ready Player One. I didn't think it was all that great. Certainly not deserving of a best picture nom.

It helps that there were 2022 Blockbusters worthy of being nominated.

Yeah, big surprise Claudio Miranda hasn't been nominated. That said, I am over the moon Florian Hoffmeister got in Top 5 as his work in "TAR" is exquisite. The man won Golden Frog.

Well, it is Spielberg and you can always count on him. But, I am not sure "The Fabelmans" has what it takes to be Best Picture winner.

Still its Innaritu, a man who has never given us anything bad.

I am overall unimpressed with "Bardo". Not that I hate it, just don't love it.

I'm ambivalent about having 10 movies in the Best Movie category but the only movie that really stands out as weak this year is Elvis (I haven't seen it but i'm basing it on critical reviews).  Aftersun clearly deserves a place on that list, so you are right back up to 10.  And the Woman King could certainly make a claim for a nomination also.

Top Gun and Avatar may not have overwhelmingly positive critical reviews either but they are phenomenal in their own ways, so I can why they'd be included.

And maybe the director of Triangle of Sadness has done much better things but not many voters probably saw those movies.  And I really did like it for what it was.

But then I also really liked the Post.   Great acting.  Good story.  Good director.  Timely in its own way.  An old fashioned movie, which can work for it and against it.

Just saw Top Gun: Maverick. It's not as good as the original, just story-wise (it feels much less naturalistic and more filled with artifice than the already artifice-laden original), and its big and very spectacular action-focused final act is shockingly derivative of Star Wars, but I can see how it would play like gangbusters in IMAX or the theatre. They also should have found some way to at least nod to Charlie and give us a bit of "Take My Breath Away". :P Like, the emotional beats with Tom Skerrit about Maverick's dad are just all-around stronger than the same type of beats they tried to do with Rooster. Val Kilmer's scene was, OTOH, very moving, but it's Val. Miles Teller was quite good, I thought. Glen Powell trying to be the Iceman of the film was less successful and came off as too self-conscious. Jennifer Connelly is gorgeous as ever but her part is about as thin and weightless as it can get.

I don't know, feels like a theater experience film that's not too rewatchable.

I've yet to see Tár, The Banshees of Inisherin, Avatar: The Way of Water, and Women Talking, though only Avatar is out in Sweden as of yet.

Of the ones I've seen... well, I guess I'd go with Everything Everywhere All at Once at the moment as the best and most cinematically interesting of the films I've seen to date, with maybe All Quiet on the Western Front being followed by .... Triangle of Sadness, then Top Gun: Maverick, and then Elvis (flaws and all) and The Fablemans bringing out the rear (it's fine but it doesn't really connect except for a couple of moments).

I  have strong reason to believe Tár and Banshees are much more my jam than the other films.

Is the original even good?

Yes? Packs a lot more emotional weight than TG:M (Goose :()  looks gorgeous, sounds great, memorable score and song selection, arguably better cast.

Only thing TG:M surpasses it in is pushing the jet scenes and the accompanying action cinematography. Which is great, last act is absurd but I can imagine how amazing it was in IMAX.

Goose's death and the music is all the movie really has. Personally I think Point Break is a lot better just as a comparison point. And they did that film dirty with the reimagining.

I can't disagree with you on Point Break. That doesn't change the fact that the original Top Gun is better than Top Gun: Maverick.

I agree, but I also don't think the original is particularly special. Feels like you had to see the movie when it came out or at a young age to really enjoy.

TG:M has some amazing visuals, but outside of that it's pretty silly. The acting isn't good, the chemistry is weird, the story is thin and the parts that are meant to be touching kind of fall flat. It's not horrible and I get why it was popular, but good it was not.

Speaking of Aftersun, finally got a chance to see it. What a achingly beautiful film about memory and depression and the bond between a daughter and a father. It was not what I expected in many ways, and all the better for it. Very pleased Charlotte Wells won at the DGA, well-deserved.
