How Much Do the Maesters Know?

Honestly, I think the Maesters are really clueless about things, and are generally either trying to hide the fact or are spending their valuable time going down educational rabbit holes. Being in a cloistered bubble often has that effect. They might not believe in magic, and they might therefor exert a lot of time and energy into finding reasons why it doesn't exist. If they are hiding anything, it's the fact that they know nothing.

These are scholastic researchers not an advanced modern cabal. Nor can they rely on unanimous consensus and ideology among members to attain complex goals. I don't think they have a conspiracy, they simply have an ethos where the world will be better off without magic and religions influencing the course of events. So they marginalize the Faith and treat magic with contempt. that's about it.

Did they kill the dragons? no. the Dance did. Did they perhaps help finishing them off afterwards? maybe. Though that still doesn't explain why eggs stopped hatching or why Dragons that flew away did lay fertile eggs anymore.

People treat Marwyn the Mage with too much reverence.

Some now magic. Like Cressen. The guy teleports and yet no one picks up on it here? Why?

Quote

"Mercy is never a mistake, Lord Renly," Ned replied. "On the Trident, Ser Barristan here cut down a dozen good men, Robert's friends and mine. When they brought him to us, grievously wounded and near death, Roose Bolton urged us to cut his throat, but your brother said, 'I will not kill a man for loyalty, nor for fighting well,' and sent his own maester to tend Ser Barristan's wounds." He gave the king a long cool look. "Would that man were here today."

Robert’s Maester. Who was Robert at the time? LP of Stormlands, Lord of Storm’s End. Who is his maester? With a few exceptions (such as old age) only one maester per castle is given so Cressen.

Quote

Maester Cressen remembered the day Davos had been knighted, after the siege of Storm's End. Lord Stannis and a small garrison had held the castle for close to a year, against the great host of the Lords Tyrell and Redwyne. Even the sea was closed against them, watched day and night by Redwyne galleys flying the burgundy banners of the Arbor. Within Storm's End, the horses had long since been eaten, the dogs and cats were gone, and the garrison was down to roots and rats. Then came a night when the moon was new and black clouds hid the stars. Cloaked in that darkness, Davos the smuggler had dared the Redwyne cordon and the rocks of Shipbreaker Bay alike. His little ship had a black hull, black sails, black oars, and a hold crammed with onions and salt fish. Little enough, yet it had kept the garrison alive long enough for Eddard Stark to reach Storm's End and break the siege.

Same Cressen. The guy teleports around.

House Arryn had two castles, so they needed two maesters.  One would travel with the family, and be at either The Eyrie or The Gates of the Moon, depending on the season. The other would stay at the Gates all the time.

Wasn't Robert living in the Vale at the time when he started his rebellion?  If so, it seems more likely that he would have taken one of the Arryn maesters on campaign, rather than send a raven to Storm's and and wait for Cressen to join him.

Actually, they have at least 5 castles, including the waycastles which are better than the tower houses and smaller keeps of some other lords who keep maesters bhis doesn't warrant a maester for all though.

That quote is the aftermath of Ruby Ford, towards the end of the RR. Robert was in the Vale at first, took part in pacification of the traitors in Gulltown, one of the first actions of the campaign, and took a ship to Stormlands.
