baxus
We've had 35+ºC weather for over 10 days in a row and I can't even begin to tell you how much I hate it. I guess it's better than all the rain we've had before that but not by much.

Eek. It's bad enough down there now, and one can only imagine what it's going to be like in August. Hope your accommodation has air conditioning. And so many storms regardless. The joys of Minnesota.
Zorral
Birth baths really do help them survive in this heat -- how do it right, and without a lot of expense. As mentioned in our local landscape museum, it's just wide shallow pottery containers set around the woodland floor, refreshed frequently by volunteers. The most important thing is that the material not be slick, like glass or plastic, because the birds' feet will slip on that. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/07/19/climate/birdbath-heat-climate.html? Last night I took my dog for a walk and streetlights were out in parts of our neighbourhood and I did take him out just so he could do his business so I couldn't assess the scope of the damage. This morning though, a lot of broken branches and a couple of broken trees. There's been some footage on social media showing some construction cranes falling over and stuff like that. Weather is much nicer now, with 25ºC temperature with daily high forecast at 31ºC. Sleeping's been a lot more pleasant last night, I'll tell you that. I was bummed the storms here last night missed us. Granted I didn't want to be in the areas with hail and tornado warnings, but I always enjoy a good thunderstorm. 11 minutes ago, LongRider said: Shit! Wildfire about 15 miles west of us and yikes! Signed up for the emergency texts if an evacuation is called. So far OK and the wind is not in this direction , so we aren't covered in smoke. The big smoke cloud can be seen to the northeast though. Guess I better pack an emergency bag. Where in Cali are you living again? Feels like every other year I hear about bad fires that are getting close to where my aunt and uncle or cousins live around San Fran. What I am seeing is a big fat smoke cloud from somewhere in Oregon and jumped the gun. (sorry about that) I'm in what's called North California, which is north of the Central Valley, as opposed to Northern Calif, which is the Bay Area and Sacramento area. The town is Redding. You did not delete that post, you just made another one. It's easy to forget how big Cali is. A few years ago I hit up two old friends when I was visiting the Bay. One was well over an hour away, which would have worked, but he was busy. The other lived really close to the Oregon border and laughed that I didn't realize just how far away he was. Same thing with him happened when I was visiting Duluth one summer and wanted to see if he could hang. He's from a small town in North MN and likewise it's a sneaky big state. It would have taken hours to get there and Duluth is at least a two hour drive from Minneapolis. Glad to hear things are fin though. ThinkerX
noticed a shift on the commentary on well, weather forecasts pertaining to the 'Heat Dome.' For the first week or ten days, 'those on the right' were mocking the forecasts with comments like 'welcome to Arizona' and 'It's Summer - what did you expect!' Plus anecdotes about how they engaged in heavy labor thirty or forty years ago during prior heatwaves. Then the temperature records from decades ago started to fall - and about half these people stopped talking.

Most, though, are in denial, or were until the duration records were broken. Alas, past experience tells me that instead of accepting reality, they will go straight to conspiracy theories like the one I mentioned before - 'the Canadian wildfires are being set by liberal arsonists as part of the Climate Change hoax.' Expect to see that sort of idiocy move from fringe to mainstream.

Exactly the same happened last year in the UK's heat wave (nowhere near as severe) The right wing were mercilessly mocking any warnings about keeping to the shade, staying hydrated etc etc; saying it's saving us thousands on travelling to Spain and that it was all just woke nonsense (how a frank temperature can be woke is still a mystery). They were then the first to complain about it when the temperature got hot, and the first to express shock and horror that people were suffering heat stroke. Fragile Bird
I noticed giant grasshoppers in my backyard yesterday evening when I mowed the lawn. Never a good sign. Not the little grasshoppers you usually see. Giant grasshoppers. Eta: before anyone asks, by giant I mean twice the size or more than the usual grasshopper. 100% bigger. That’s a lot. btw, how come whenever you want to use “eta” auto-correct changes it to “meta”. Surely eta is used in these pages far more than the other.
