Trump also only having one vote is extra funny. ETA: Even if McCarthy survives this, what are the chances he lasts longer than Truss? Yet another stalemate going nowhere. If Trump were to somehow get Speaker (unlikely I know), there's the terrifying point that'd he literally be in line for the Presidency should something happen to Biden and Harris. And unlike Carl Albert in 1974, he'd not be averse to it.

He'll be safe because there won't be anything to do. He can powerlessly sit in the chair while endless fever dream bills pass the House and the committees do pointless investigations. It's only when a tough vote comes up that he'll collapse, which won't be until the debt ceiling standoff in the summer.

DMC
Yeah I agree with Fez. Nothing's going to happen til the debt ceiling. And for all we know that might be kicked til the October budget battle.

Jeor
Does the Speaker have to follow the Hastert rule or is that only unwritten convention? And do any of the Freedom demands loosen this requirement? A lot of crucial stuff could get passed with House Dems support (e.g. clean deb ceiling extension) but unless the Speaker allows it to be brought to the floor I'm guessing it won't happen, even if a Democratic Senate passes legislation. Jaxom 1974
This is absolutely bonkers. That they haven't floated Scalise or even Stefanik at this point...if only to see if there is any traction there to pressure Kevin to get the hell out of the way... And the laughter when Trump'one vote was announced after this last round was glorious... Martell Spy and LongRider

McCarthy is so close (numerically) that it would be hard to switch his whole support to Scalise. I'm guessing a bunch of McCarthy supporters are so furious at the rebels that they don't want to embolden them or give them the satisfaction of ditching him. McCarthy is already so humiliated yet still so eager to be Speaker that unless he gives a full-throated endorsement no one else is going to get the votes. As has been pointed out there isn't really any time pressure to come to a solution with the Senate in recess until January 23 (unless you're newly elected and need to get paid as well as your staff). And McCarthy is no doubt calculating that as time goes on, and as leaks of his concessions begin to mount, the rebels are only going to look worse and worse. Not that they really care about looking worse. Democrats should hold firm and only vote for a compromise candidate if they can promise them the sky - some committee control and power over the legislative agenda. Thought she'd be teaching Haitian Studies or a/k/a how to eff up irrevocably a teeny impoverished nation beyond all repair. I'm all for criticizing how badly the Clintons fucked up in Haiti, along with the US and the UN, but this kind of comment seems to ignore that the reason Haiti is so impoverished is that the US and Europe have been fucking it over for centuries, ever since their successful slave rebellion. The Clintons and their venality are amateurs compared to their historical predecessors. JGP
