Most terrifying/sinister duo

Recommended Posts

What is the most terrifying pair/duo of two individuals in A Song of Ice and Fire, the worst combination of two persons who work with each other for a common cruel and twisted goal most of the time that could have possibly happened in Westeros and/or in Essos, whenever they are criminals, professionnal assassins, sellswords, lords or knights with a sadistic streak ?

  1. Hizdahr and Galazza Galare in Essos.
  2. The Faceless Men and Arya are the death dealers in Braavos.
  3. Jaime and Cersei in Westeros for the time being.
  4. Jon and Arya in the future will be very lethal, very cruel in the North.

Stannis’ goodness is more talked about than displayed. He forgave Davos for preempting a kin slaying blood sacrifice of an innocent boy, shades of Gandhi, and he went to the Wall when the only alternative was a petty revenge/tantrum sack of Claw Isle and slowly awaiting inevitable defeat…which he was seriously considering. Oh, and he chopped off the fingers of the half of a smuggling operation (the half that wasn’t Stannis Baratheon) for saving his life but left the other half mercifully intact and Stannis-like. My God, look out Buddha, he’s coming for you.

Mel isn’t so much a bad influence as a focusing point. Stanis talks almost exclusively about Stannis, about what Stannis deserves, how Stannis has been deprived, how much Stannis has been unloved, unrewarded, cheated. Rigged election, stop the steal. The only character who talks about themself anywhere near as much as Stannis does is Cersei, and that’s only since we’ve seen inside her batshit head. Without that insight we had no idea just how narcissistic she was. But with Stannis we don’t need a peek inside…my God, can you imagine? “welcstannis to Stannis worldstannis whichstannis isn’tstannis astannis Stannis-centricstannis stannisas itStannis ou-Stannis-ght tostannis bestannis, butstannis we’restannis stannistrying astannis hardstannis asstannis westannis canstannis tostannis stannismake itstannis bestannis Stannisso.”

A character 3000% committed to himself like Stannis doesn’t really need bad influences. One in his position is going to explode in some direction, Mel’s just kinda hoping to point the Stannisplosion ~ where she wants it to go.

There's more in that partnership.  The head of Robb Stark is on Robert Strong while his own has Greywind's.  The Others will wightify Robb's remains.

This is my problem with the committed Stannis haters; they take genuinely good criticisms of Stannis and just run with them until they veer wildly into an extreme position.

I think Stannis is my favourite character of the series, but not because he's a shining paragon. He's got serious flaws, no doubt about that. He's got a stick up his ass about slights against him, he is deeply insecure about how people talk about him, and he's got issues with women that reveal him to be incredibly awkward and problematic. But those flaws help round him out as a human being, because he has a lot of positive traits. He isn't gaudy or lazy like Renly (when did we ever see him do a Master of Laws' duties?), nor is he a raging hedonist like Robert. He dresses plainly and speaks plainer. He hates yes men and bootlickers. He doesn't seek empty praise from people, nor is he afraid to raise a common-born criminal to the ranks of nobility. His recognition of Davos reveals the best parts of his nature; for all his insecurity about other people's opinion, he also defies their prejudices by naming Davos his Hand of the King for speaking the truth and being a good man. And while his focus on justice is skewed, he's far better than most of his contemporaries. He gelds men for rape, he despises corruption, and he refuses to play ball within a system just to get ahead.

But what makes Stannis so compelling despite his flaws is the fact that he's actually changing during the course of the story. He listens to Davos and Jon Snow, two men who most would dismiss because of their dubious backgrounds. He genuinely wants to do good, and he's one of the few people who recognises that the Others are the main threat, and he's putting everything on the line to protect the realms of men. He's not going to get any recognition for it either, except maybe in the North, but he's doing it anyway. I really really hope that he doesn't burn Shireen, too. It feels really out of character for him at this point in the story, especially since he's ordered Justin Massey to crown Shireen if he dies.

Also, that comparison to Donald Trump is probably the most insulting thing I've ever heard someone say about Stannis; Stannis would have executed such a corrupt insurrectionist as soon as he could find proof of his guilt.

Stannis would be boring if he were a paragon of virtue.

We don't see Stannis perform any of his duties as master of ships either though, but that doesn't mean he wasn't doing them before he left. We see Renly attend all the council meetings. It doesn't help that it's not clear what exactly the Master of Laws is supposed to do.

I never understood why he didn't make Davos his admiral or at least give him a higher position during the Battle of the Blackwater.

The Mad King and a priest/priestess of R’holler would be lethal. Although very just and noble, I believe Rhaegar’s obsession with the prophecy of his child would only get worse and potentially more deadly had his father had a voice of R’holler sprouting shit about The Prince that was Promised

Alas, they were both slain
