The Last of Us (HBO Spoilers)

The production values really help take this show to the next level.  It looks so much better than any other post-apocalyptic show I can remember seeing.  That episode had more varied sets than an entire season of The Walking Dead.

Yes, this is shaping up to be an excellent series. I thought once again that the pre-apocalypse portion was the most tense and interesting part, but I really enjoyed the rest of it as well. The mycorrhizal network is a very nice spin to the zombie genre, and adds a lot of tension.

That opening scene felt like it could have been lifted straight out of Chernobyl.  Excellent stuff.

Man, ive always hated mushrooms, i dont get how people eat them...so this show is freaking me out. Very hard to watch certain scenes...

That said, a very predictable episode.

Yeah. That actress did a great job in conveying the terror she felt while realizing what’s really happening. Her saying bomb this city was pretty chilling.

They absolutely nailed the clickers too. Really good episode.

The second episode, like the first had a great beginning, and also a great ending. I'm glad I worked out what happened to the cities before they told us.

Agreed, the prologue scenes have been excellent in both episodes, John Hannah last week and the Indonesian professor this week both really conveying the danger of the infection.

I really love the prologues, which is good because the main show is decidedly a shot for shot rehash of the game. It's less like watching an adaptation and more like watching a 'HBO plays' stream.

I thought so too, but this didn't really impact my enjoyment. The last episode was focused on establishing the post-apocalyptic world, and I felt like there wasn't much time to develop the characters.

I think this episode did a good job at letting the characters start to show their quirks and nuances. Which is important to me, since I've never seen anything in the horror genre that is particularly disturbing or scary to me, so it has to offer much more than simply scares.

I'm really starting to like Joel and Ellie.

I also appreciate that Tess's sacrifice made a lot of sense from the perspective of character dynamics. Joel is old and resistant in his ways, a cynic, and it's explicitly stated that he's a pretty terrible person. It would have to take something spectacular to persuade him to engage in some noble escort mission, and the show certainly provided one.

I also like how Tess ended. She also was a terrible person, but she finally saw some glimmer of hope in an awful, bleak world, and that girded her to confront an extremely terrifying situation, even as the cordyceps was insinuating its control over her.

I think it humanized what typically is a generic action scene in this sort of material.

Speaking of predictability, I was personally surprised by Tess dying so quickly, but I gather that's true to the game.  I had expected her to be more a mid-season death, fleshing her relationship up with Joel more and maybe revealing how she got to where she was.

I havent played the game, so i don't know if she's even in it but i definitely expected her to die in this episode. Just seemed telegraphed to me.

As @IFR it didnt impact my enjoyment, because the production value is super high, and the show is visually very interesting, but i do hope they steer away from the more predictable zombie-show tropes.

That’s who it was. I thought he looked familiar, but I didn’t realize it was Batiatus!

Here's a clip from the game on Tess, and it's very close to a reshoot. The primary difference is that they changed the vector and behavior of the fungus and incorporated that into this sequence instead of being pursued by FEDRA.

I did have to check the credits to confirm it was him, because he looks a fair bit older than the last time I saw him in anything.

Her death is pretty accurate to the game. It happens in the same place and time, but in a slightly different way. For obvious reasons she doesn’t get kissed, lol

Watching that video convinces me that I couldn't properly enjoy watching someone stream their play of this game. The cinematic sequence is well done, but immediately afterward, seeing Joel's spastic Brownian motion as the player takes control just made the whole thing hilarious to me. Here Tess is sacrificing herself, and Joel randomly starts running backwards and crouching behind a tree while the threat is to his back, and just taking his time collecting items.

But I'm sure having control yourself makes this more immersive so those moments don't detract as much from the experience.

hmm, I knew she couldn't last long because, just Joel's daughter, she ain't on the poster. But I expected another episode for her.

Also, the trailers pretty much give away that she isn't going to last because they're 90% Joel and Ellie either by walking by themselves or meeting with various other characters that very much aren't Tess.
