I think many people know the idea but haven't read the theory.  If I'm not mistaken @Lost Melnibonean crafted this wicked bit of theory some years back.  The ideas is of course, dreadful, but the theory is...well you would just have to read it to really appreciate what it is.  Had the pleasure to post with him a few times in the past.  Clever dude and well worth reading.

I did not originate that theory. I just helped to develop it.

This one is all mine, though...

As others have said already, there are far too many ideas out there that are... well... insane, to put it nicely. And I say 'ideas' b/c many can't be called theories since they lack  everything a theory needs to be called that. There are plenty of proper theories that are outright wrong or, in other cases, just theories that are wrong in my opinion and I acknowledge I may the wrong and not said theories.

So, the inane 'ideas' that are not worth being called theories are just good material to excercise one's sarcasm muscles.

On the other hand, the theories that I disagree with but are intellectually honest are worth engaging with because the exchange  is often interesting. I also think there's no reason to mock or shoot down [real] theories just because one doesn't agree with them.

The third category is that of theories that are sort of grounded n the text but not really. Like, they use the author's understanding of the text but in such bizarre ways that it becomes almost impossible to engage. I remember a few years back somone had a totally convoluted idea based on thoroughly incomprehensible notions, and when this was pointed out, the argument was that Martin is super elitist and has written the books in such a way to deliberately make it impossible for anyone but the geniuses who have read everything ever published in world history to  be able to 'decipher' the clues. And I was like, 'WUT?'.

So, if it's a real theory w/ thought put into it and textual support, I don't think mockery is warranted at all. That would be  narrow-minded and petty imo.

But since the thread is about just that, I will name the theories that I laugh at because they are the very worst ever:

anything by the Order of the Green Hand. Seriously.

I want to add the "plotzee" category: throw names, abilities, swords, titles, etc in hats and pull one of each and then make up some prediction plot out of it. All of a sudden you end up with Moqorro will skinchange Ghost and wield Widow's Wail and become Lord of Rook's Nest with Margaery for wife. It's as if they're playing clued: Colonel Mustard killed them in the billiard room with a leadpipe.

It was recently brought to my attention that there is a theory that Jon is the son of Brandon and Lyanna Stark.

And it made me laugh. It’s baseless and disgusting, and seems to come from Targ-fanatics that want to make the Starks look as bad as the Targs

yeah ! and might I add it's pretty hypocritical?! like, let's praise Targaryens for incest but the Starks are filthy monsters for incest?!

Indeed; incest is awesome no matter who practices it!

This has to be the single worst and most easily falsifiable theory anyone has ever come up with.

I am so glad you put that link up. That was the first really funny thing I read on the forum.

I've also heard Fife is an incest hotspot...Never go to Fife anyway though if you can avoid it (no offence on the small chance that anyone from Fife is reading this, and I am not including St. Andrews as that might as well be a different country).

I remember reading an article about the favourite types of searches per US State on Pornhub.

Inter-racial porn was most popular in the Deep South.  I was puzzled that it was not incestuous porn.  A colleague explained that porn is about fantasy, not humdrum reality.

This works so well on two levels, both of them with horrific implications. But, indeed, whenever there is any sort of assessment of porn searches, that fact generally explains things perfectly.

Indeed.  Fantasising about inter-racial sex in a region founded on slavery is full of squick.

The most popular searches in the UK and Australia, incidentally,  are for lesbian porn.

Unfortunately, that might partially be an indication of LGBTQIA+ people feeling the need to hide their sexual orientation in those countries. (Coupled with porn as an industry being predominantly geared towards straight men.)

Not to say there aren't countries that do much worse in those respects, such as my own (the U.S.).

Lesbian porn is almost 100% geared towards straight men (so friends tell me).
