UK Politics - Now is the Spring of our Discontent

What Farron gets wrong there is it's not that people are intolerant of someone having a worldview, it's when that worldview affects other people that it becomes a problem. If you are a lunatic anti vaxxer, you are entitled to your beliefs, go for it. But if you start to push those beliefs onto other people and prevent them getting vaccinated then suddenly we need to sit up and pay attention.

It's the same with religion, totally fine for people to have religious beliefs, but if you are going to be in a position of power where those beliefs become relevant to others then yes it should be scrutinised.

Personally I'm also pretty untrusting of people who believe in religion, I think it says a lot about someones mental processes so that would make me want to rule them out of any political office.

These people are bonkers. Farron sounds like he actually believes this shit is true. As in it actually happened.

Listen man, sometimes when your lord and savior is a wizard you've got to teach yourself to fear and hate witches.

Setting aside all the glaring and obvious issues, I've got some bad news for Tim regarding the reliability of eye witness testimony, especially after any reasonable period of time has elapsed.

It was interesting to read Mormont’s description of the strict practices of certain Scots Presbyterians, and boy oh boy, it sure explains the city of Toronto and the province of Ontario that I grew up in. People joked well into the 60s and maybe the 70s that Toronto rolled up the sidewalks on the weekend. Nothing was allowed to be open on a Sunday. But then again this whole province was run by Scots Presbyterians.

Before Pierre Trudeau became PM in the late 60s he was Justice Minister and one of his key positions was “there is no place for the state in the bedrooms of the nation”. He introduced the laws that decriminalized homosexual acts. He couldn’t change the mind set of everyone, of course, but that was the first step that eventually led to Canada bringing home it’s constitution and writing the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

The Conservatives, of course, led a smear campaign saying, essentially, “look at this fucking homosexual monster trying to destroy Canada”. God bless conservatives everywhere, eh?

eta: Trudeau was a practicing Catholic and always put the interests of the nation ahead of his faith, much to the anger and chagrin of various Catholic prelates in the country

Trudeau pere seems like one of those few politicians who are actually worthy of admiration.  Has anyone read his biography by English?

Oh Oh goodie - another vote of no confidence is on the horizon.

What's the record for most PMs without a GE? This lot must have smashed it!

There will surely have to be an election if they do this.

When the Puritans left England, they first went to the Netherlands because they had religious freedom there.

In the NA colonies they were horrific to Catholics and anyone not Them, and not so nice to many who were Them, particularly any woman who stepped out line.

When Cromwell became ruler of England, many of them returned to that England, which by all accounts was just a barrel of fun and laffs and so good for everybody, that the desperate people of England went and got themselves a king again. :P

They'll need at least one more to not be sharing the record, the 1935-1945 period also had three: Stanley Baldwin -> Neville Chamberlain -> Winston Churchill

He is still reviled in parts of Canada. Especially amongst the conservative sorts.

Why? You don't vote for a PM, you vote for a member with a party affiliation.

I sensed that, but it was less clear to me why.  Are they in favor of criminalizing homosexuality and abortion?

He was very smart, very arrogant, and women were mad for him. He did date Barbra Streisand. He was all the things conservatives weren't.

Europeans mock UK shoppers with photos of supermarket shelves full of fresh fruit and veg

Quote

EU citizens are mocking UK shoppers by sharing pictures of supermarket shelves filled to the brim with fresh fruit and vegetables as food shortages hit Britain.

Tesco has followed Aldi, Asda and Morrisons in introducing shopper restrictions on certain fresh produce as shops struggle to get supplies due to reported supply chain disruption.

The UK's biggest supermarket brought in a limit of three items per customer on tomatoes, peppers and cucumbers as a precautionary measure.

Meanwhile, Aldi has placed limits on peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes as retailers warned the shortages - although expected to be temporary - were likely to last for weeks.
