I saw Tasmanian doctors were on the cusp of industrial action as well, and largely focused on the same section of the profession - junior doctors getting absolutely screwed.

Interesting, especially as Australia & New Zealand are seen as the places UK docs flee to for better pay & working conditions.

Probably not Tasmania though. It barely gets press coverage here but there's serious long term economic issues that can be largely ignored by the parties. I get the impression the Victorian conditions they're asking for are much closer to acceptable.

There are still plenty of issues though, although I'd say the majority fall squarely on GPs rather than specialists. Appointments with a doctor that are 100% covered by Medicare are called "bulk billed" but the rates paid by the government haven't been going up enough and also expects sessions to be too short to provide quality care. As a result very few doctors offer it anymore and those that do tend to be slammed with patients.

Do we have Trus's honours list yet?  Is she gonna give Boris a knighthood so we are never rid of him.?

In retrospect, it's a bit surprising that Boris didn't try to give himself a knighthood.

*Only do the duties that are in your position description and the hours that you're contractually obligated to work. This shouldn't even be considered industrial action, let alone be able to be ruler illegal action.

I believe I've gone my entire career in work to rule mode. Though most of my jobs have included a requirement to pull extra duties in emergencies (govt) or have fixed on-call days / weekends (private practice). Though emergencies have always been compensated for with either overtime, or TOIL, and I've only needed to work in emergencies about 3 or 4 times in 27 years.

Honestly, I think people are mad if they want to go into medicine. Most go into it to be of service to society, which means they are subject to employer exploitation of that motivation. Some go into it to get rich, but surely there are easier ways for people with that sort of intelligence to get rich.

I'm not sure either of those things are true any more for NZ, if it ever was, if someone was coming here to work in the public system. Most people move here for the lifestyle, not for higher incomes. Our junior doctors are as abused and overworked as anywhere.

And the paradox is that anyone you want going into medicine is going to be vulnerable to that exploitation. If they don't care about helping/healing people they shouldn't be a doctor.

It’s surprising he only tried to give his dad a knighthood instead of a hereditary peerage

It's not just about basic pay, but also overtime, weekends & public holidays, all of those are easier to claim in NZ than they are here - and given that I'm an Emergency Doc, I do lots of those shifts.

I think some medics do have a rose tinted view of NZ & Australia.

Thankfully a lot of people have woken up to the fact that as much as it can be a vocation, it is also a job where we deserve not to be taken for mugs by the govt, that's why you have every kind of doctor going on strike here.

The BMA is currently balloting Consultants to go on strike as well, and I am quite confident that will also go through. Though it would be a quite daring govt that doesn't make a deal with the most senior doctors in the country.

He'll want one of the big gongs like Sir Tony Blair KG.  If the stories of him bollocking (then) Prince Charles are true, he may be waiting a while.

Yeah. I think the queen only clung onto life so long so he woudlnt be her last PM, and to deprive him of showboating at her funeral.
She died within hours of him fucking off. Had she died a l couple days earlier, he’d have used that as an excuse to cling on for a while later and hope everyone forgot he was resigning
