NBA Playoffs - Joker's Wild

That didn't take long. Jrue to Boston for Time Lord, Brogdon a protected first next year and a unprotected first in 2029.

I understand why Boston likes Jrue as he's probably a better fit than Brogdon, but giving up their defensive anchor is strange unless he really does only have one leg.

Portland has actually done a pretty good job for a teardown situation. They've got their high pick everyone wanted, two solid bigs and a vet guard. Idk how good they'll be, but they could be sneak into the playoffs if Scoot is legit. And if not they have players other contending teams will want at the trade deadline.

The Suns are different, I think its marginal whether they are better or worse.  They needed to ship Ayton out though, so that is one item off the to do list.

I think that the Suns, as currently constructed, are worse than the Monty Williams-coached team of the past couple of years.

The current roster has less defense, more creaky stars, and I thought Monty Williams was a top coach and better than Frank Vogel (not that Vogel is a bad coach, but Williams was more to my taste).

He goofs off every media day. Last year he had absurd dreads. His interview about how this last week made him emo was hilarious, and a nice bounce-back after his weirdly angry comments about tampering when Portland got a massively better deal than what the Heat could offer.

Aaron Rodgers does the same thing. The photo you take at media day is your official picture for the year. I expect more athletes to do it going forward.

It's the Nuggets' world until anyone can knock them off. They have the best overall talent that also fits most ideally. There's no way to guard the Joker/Murray pick and roll with Gordon and Porter lurking around them.

That said you never know what deals will be done at the deadline and there's always a random team that pops up.

I'm not at all confident that the Celtics are better than they have been the past several years.  Porzingis not someone you can rely on to stay healthy, and other than him, it's just Al Horford to slow down big men like Giannis.  Horford will be nearly 38 by the time the next playoffs roll around, and it's a lot to expect to get 30+ effective playoff minutes from him anymore.

The Celtics talent has not led to much playoff success in the past 4 years.  They have twice lost to a Heat team that is pretty clearly less talented, and arguably the Finals loss to GSW as well.  So I'm not surprised that they are making some big changes, but I'm also not confident that this is what they needed.  That starting 5 + White off the bench will probably be great in the regular season, and they will still be able to drive opposing guards crazy.  But can this team win once Porzingis gets hurt?  They aren't as deep as they used to be.

Yeah the Celtics are still going to go how far Tatum takes them. So far he’s not been able to take that step up to be a dominant halfcourt player which is what is needed in the playoffs. I don’t think losing your best defensive center and upgrading a guard makes them overwhelming favorites.

They are in a much worse spot to defensively check Giannis or Jokic. Also by doing this late in the offseason they’ve lost the option to snap up cheap centers on one year contracts. Phoenix and LA sucked those all up already.

Tatum is a lot like Josh Allen. His highs are incredible, but he plays like shit a lot of the time too. Brown is also streaky and making him the highest paid player was a bad idea (especially if he can't fix his dribbling issues). Maybe they can win it all with this team, but the roster that made it to the Finals a few years ago was better imo and had more balance. Now they can't afford any injuries, which as mentioned, is a concern for them.

Neither of them are great ball handlers which hurts them in playoff half court basketball. I do think Porzingis helps for that but he does have to stay healthy to achieve it. Don’t see them as a top defensive team though.

The six man rotation of Holiday, Tatum, Brown, White, Porzingis and Horford features 4 very good defenders, so I think their defense will be fine, at least in the regular season.  The problem will be when they're in a seven game series against a team with a good big man like Giannis/Jokic.  Once they start getting exposed, I don't see them having a plan B.

Tatum and Brown need to work on their turnovers. Holiday should be an upgrade over Smart on that front, but he's not going to solve that problem, while losing Robert Williams opens up a new problem.

Not sure what was up with Porzingis in Dallas, but he either couldn't or wouldn't play center. Horford is getting older each year and is undersized to begin with. I don't think having a solid defensive backcourt can make up for that if they can't rely on Porzingis. Anyway, they probably still need a backup big regardless. Hopefully they try and get someone reasonably fresh rather than some veteran.

Bookies don't look like they can split Celtics, Bucks, Nuggets, Suns, and a lot of daylight to the next team.  Anyone got anyone different?

Of those 4 who do you think will have the healthiest players come playoff time? Im sceptical it'll be Phoenix or Boston. The Bucks and Nuggets seem more durably constructed , end of the day I think Lillard finally gets his first and Giannis gets his second ring.

But of course nothings certain till we see who holds up to the Loooongggg  grind of games soon to kick off.

  • 2 weeks later...

Its all very quiet with only a day to go.  I'm pretty excited for this year, a decent number of teams with a shot, but 4 prohibitive favourites (and 3 of them being small market/less history teams makes it more interesting).

Expansion of the game continues thanks to the best 4 players in the world not being from the US, and it might be 5 by the end of the year depending on how that absolute freak plays (hyperbole obviously, but his ceiling is madness).

Giannis just got paid mega bucks, him and Dame swallow a lot of capital, they better win.
