What grinds your gears?

Just stop sending me emails

Oh god this please.  I get between 150-300 emails a day for work.

My attitude is exactly the opposite of that meme.  I'm telling you, rafts of emails absolutely could and should have been a phone call.

I'm definitely guilty of gentle reminders. I'm not trying to be passive aggressive, I'm trying to keep from sounding demanding!

Don’t do that. Seriously. You are female; you are already starting from a position of people assuming that you are being passive aggressive.

Just state the facts, ma’am.

”Hi, Ben. [I hope you are well. Optional. Chitchat on I hope you had a great time on your vacation. Also optional. Depends on how well you know each other.] I’m writing to follow up on* the report that was due on Wednesday. Could you please let me know if I somehow missed your e-mail or if you need an extended deadline?

* NEVER say “I’m writing because I’d like to follow up on” or “I’d like to thank you for…”

JUST FUCKING SAY IT, there’s nothing worse than the mangy wish-wash of “I’d like to”. The next time I fucking see that, I’m going to say:

Rebecca, thank you for stating that you would “like to thank my team” for their outstanding work. I am very surprised that you did not have enough confidence in my team’s efforts to *actually* thank them for their outstanding work. Please let me know if this is in any way due to a lack of effort on the part of my team.

Thank you,

Chataya

Coming back from a week off to 1,000 emails is soul destroying. I remember having nearly a month off for my honeymoon and just deleting them all unread 'if its important I'll get a 'gentle reminder' email' was my thought process.

I usually go with, Hi, have you made any progress on this? if it’s not important/urgent. If it is urgent, I get kinda autocratic and it’s Please do this and this because it’s very important that we get it done for reasons reasons, please drop me a message when it’s done/update me if there’s a problem. And I will even flag it as urgent and I will even call you as many times as I need to to get what I want, (and I will even text you to pls call me back regarding an urgent matter, if you don’t pick me up), I’m horrible, sorry. :leaving:

The flip side to this is that you can end up being ghosted if you dont put in all that fluffy sugar coating (particularly at least with our HR).  What you didn't show proper homage to my tiny little fiefdom?  Say goodbye to getting that great candidate's paperwork through in the next millennia!

The fucking Foo Fighters.

Yeah, Dave Grohl is a lovely guy, but if he had a killer chorus living up his arse he wouldn't be able to find it with both hands and a funnel.

So, so overrated.

The first album is pretty rad through and through

People who share a laundry room in an apartment building, who leave their laundry in the machines, then take off for the day, and are outraged, outraged I say!, that others needed to do laundry, so removed their damned laundry from said machines that sometimes, why yes, they expect to hog for three days at a time!

One of my neighbors just came up from the laundry room and is fuming in fury that someone did this to him.  I said, "Why didn't you just take the stuff out instead of waiting for whoever it was to get a digit out?"  He said, "I don't like touching other people's clothes."  Ah well.  I don't mind, and I do it whenever necessary.

Dorm rules were you had to leave your basket on top of the machine. If you couldn’t me bothered to move your clothes in a timely fashion, they were thrown in the basket.

Another escalator-based one- several times in the last few weeks I've nearly collided because some stupid bastard's stopped just after coming off it. Not right in front, but close enough to be blocking the flow when there's a few people coming up behind them.

On one occasion they literally just parked up with their fucking massive suitcases and watched as people had to squeeze past them.

One of the few situations where it is perfectly okay to put your hands on a stranger and shove em out of the way. Twats.

I've never had so much email "traffic" but I also hate emails.

Filters are your friend. I've added them wherever I've worked, added labels to be able to group emails more easily and marked as many as I could as read immediately on arrival at my inbox. The important ones go through, and also some less important ones but most of the riffraff just gets skipped.

So I have to be really careful in my line of work with filters/I’m not permitted to set my own work filters, though I can use “rules” and automatic filing.  Some people do use automatic filing features/rules, but that doesn’t work for me (I tried and I was missing things that were important because for me once things go into a file folder it is out of sight out of mind).  I process and email and file or delete.  I occasionally get to zero inbox nirvana.  If I get really busy I do have a “To Do” file and a “Delegated” file where I move emails until I can file them away forever.  Anyhow, everyone has their own process.

People who visit somewhere on holiday but apparently have nothing but contempt for the locals.

honestly, the amount of things I over hear people saying about the Cornish when they come here on holiday is horrible. So hurtful.

even WORSE when they move here, because they can afford to, absolutely hate the Cornish locals and just associate with other wealthy people who have moved down.

can’t make it up…

Final exams are this week at my school. Last week, there was a major update to the database that holds all of the students’ grades. We are STILL beta testing the update, which means that no one can do their end-of-semester paperwork. Great idea, boss, doing it now instead of a week after midterms when no one needs it.

So, the thing that is grinding my gears these days is people who organize things but don't understand efficiency and logistics.
