US politics - wheeling and dealing, avoiding debt ceiling

Falwell finally buggered off on the 15th of May. His post was open for interpretation.

I have a (kinda?) fun Jerry Falwell story.  He founded Liberty University and in 2002 their ultimate frisbee team hosted a tournament.  My team attended, and we were a coed team.  The Liberty team seemed like decent enough dudes, the only weird rule was that we ABSOLUTELY could not go into the adjacent dorms to use the bathroom or anything.  Anyways, we played a couple of games and in the middle of the day there was a parade through campus featuring Jerry Falwell riding around and waving.  We were just sitting there between games, whatever.  But some of the Liberty crowd took real exception to the fact that we were a coed team, and particularly that one of the women players was wearing only a (modest) sports bra, just like 19th century prostitutes used to wear.

Anyways, apparently this got back to the campus higherups and the Liberty Ultimate team was disbanded for several years.  So that happened.

This is going to net Democrats an extra couple seats in the House.

Hm.  Trying to think about the implications here.  I'd think it'd only give them one more seat - going from one to two - in Alabama.  But it may help them in the Louisiana cases if SCOTUS remains consistent.  May even help them in North Carolina.  I guess we'll see.

LOL, thanks!  It's like getting a card from my grandma a month late.

Ooops! Well, better late than not at all.  I guess?  I should have read all the way through first.  You'd think by now I would know that, but noooooooooooo.

Anyhow, dumpster is demanding a new trial for the E Jean Carroll case because since he isn't guilty of rape the damages are way too high.

I wonder how those folks are feeling about Falwell Jr. these days.

The big thing will be whether this gets applied to the Florida case going to trial this summer. But even without that, I think it gives them anywhere from +1 to +4 (AL, LA, NC, and GA- there was a similar case in GA that was put on hold pending the outcome of the AL case).

Justice Thomas' billionaire benefactor Harlan Crow donated to Manchin, Sinema, 'Unbreakable Nine'

Crow and his wife, Kathy, have for decades been GOP megadonors, contributing millions of dollars to Republican candidates and campaign committees over the past three decades, according to OpenSecrets, the nonpartisan, independent group that tracks money in politics. But Federal Election Commission records reveal that the Crows have also donated several hundred thousand dollars to a select group of congressional Democrats during this same period, OpenSecrets reported.

These Democrats are known for blocking their party’s more progressive initiatives, (...)

They include  Sens. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona, who last December switched her affiliation to independent, as well as a group of moderate to conservative House Democrats, including Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas and Josh Gottheimer of New Jersey.

Crow is also a megadonor to No Labels, the supposedly nonpartisan centrist group that wants to launch a third-party unity presidential campaign in 2024 with one Republican and one Democrat on the ticket. Democrats fear that these efforts will siphon enough votes to help Donald Trump or another Republican candidate defeat Biden in a close election.

The New Republic reported that it had obtained a document with figures showing that Crow donated over $130,000 to No Labels between 2019 and 2021.

Crow was considered a “whale”-level donor by the organization—an august status reserved for only the most generous donors. Crow referred other donors to No Labels, ones who earned the “whale,” “dolphin,” and lesser “minnow” status. By 2021, Crow had steered nearly two dozen other donors to No Labels, the information provided to The New Republic shows.

...

Crow’s donations, though small, are reflective of a larger trend. The anti-corruption website Sludge reported in November 2021:

While Manchin and Sinema worked to delay and reduce the Democrats’ budget bill, they were raising campaign money from wealthy Republican donors, according to a Sludge review of campaign finance data from Code for Democracy. For many of these donors, their contributions to Manchin or Sinema this year have been only their first or second donations to any Democrats in recent election cycles.

... Truthout conducted a search of FEC data on individual campaign contributions that found that Crow had made donations to members of the “Unbreakable Nine,” a group of conservative Democratic House members who “threw a major wrench into the negotiations” on the Build Back Better legislation.

Crow gave to eight out of nine members of the Unbreakable Nine, the group that would end up killing the bill. ...

After lawmakers like Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (I-Arizona) worked to completely neuter the bill, the Nine, led by Gottheimer, ultimately dealt the killing blow.

Democratic leaders had previously pledged to progressives that they would keep the reconciliation bill tied to conservatives’ infrastructure bill in order to ensure the former’s passage. But Pelosi caved to pressure from the Unbreakable Nine and allowed the infrastructure bill to pass without Build Back Better, causing the latter to die.

...and Crow donated another $500,000 to Liberty Central, a conservative activist group founded by Ginni Thomas... He’s also given generously to Senate Judiciary Committee Republicans, (...) the same committee that would be responsible for holding hearings about Thomas and Crow’s dealings

Yeah, meant to mention Georgia too.  We'll see though.  Looking at the decision it seemed Roberts was specifically upset about the overreach of Alabama's argument in gutting Section 2.  It's definitely a good thing that both Roberts and Kavanaugh are on board enough to reject that argument, but I'm not knowledgeable enough about the respective cases to know if that's likely to apply to all the others.

But yeah, if it also applies to Florida that - along with the four other seats - would basically preemptively flip the House.

GOP’s booming support for guns is turning off millennial, Gen Z Republicans
About a quarter of young Republicans in one poll said they strongly or somewhat supported an assault weapons ban.

Quote

One poll conducted by Harvard’s political institute this spring found that a clear majority of young conservatives supported mandatory psychological exams for gun purchasers. A separate, recurring survey from YouGov concluded in March that Gen Z and millennial Republicans are more likely to believe in tougher gun laws than older Republicans and that young conservatives’ support for the idea has grown in the past year.

The generational disconnect suggests broader GOP opposition to gun restrictions will be a steady irritant inside a party already struggling to appeal to young voters.

The kids grew up with the terror of them, and the experiences of being locked down, having their schools shot up -- many, far many more than the fascists seem capable of imagining or understanding.  But you know, the children need to think of the good for the country.

It's confirmed by multiple news sites from what I'm seeing. And this is only the beginning. Trump should go to jail for life for shit he tried in GA and I bet he made similar calls to other Republicans in states he was losing.

Well, Fani Willis has expanded her investigation to several more states (RICO style).

As for the indictment, remember he's made false promises before, claiming he'd get indicted next Tuesday, some weeks ago...
