Pour one out for EHK

Recommended Posts

Was so glad we got to meet him at the Glasgow Worldcon. Walked around in the city for a bit with him, chatting away -- I think we'd volunteered to pick up some supplies for the party maybe? that rings a bell -- and he was as funny and sharp in person as he was on the board.

Vale EHK.

One of the most influential boarders we have seen.

After reading some of his stuff while I was still mostly a book forum poster, I knew I'd have to sharpen my steel if I was going to participate in the GC politics threads.

I have indeed poured one out for EHK. And for Manwoody (single malt in his honour) and Lilith, and Brudewollen, and the others who left us too soon.

Time sometimes colours memory so if you're reading this and wonder if we're all just being nostalgic when we wax lyrical about these folks, let me assure you, we're not. They were big characters with big hearts, sharp wits, and open minds. I miss them all.

Please don't take this as me blowing smoke up your ass, but I always thought you did (and do) a good job of carrying on his legacy, the way you deal with trolls, sea lions, and the like, in a very blunt, no-nonsense, yet still informed and articulate way.

I mean, let's be honest. EHK could be a prick [despite his late bloominess] and if anyone can call him that, it's me.

Which might make me miss him more, not sure lol

Yeah, Brude passed a decade ago, in his sleep. Like EHK, much too young.

JGP: I issued EHK with more than one warning in his time so I know very well he could be an asshole. He was no Manwoody, who could dissect idiots with finesse. EHK went for fire and blood, not rapier wit, with all that entails. Those four above were very different people.

But EHK was like that because he had a big heart, which in his case means passion, not necessarily kindness. And he couldn't have had the late bloom without having an open mind.

Brude passed on August 17, 2012, at the age of 40, so that anniversary isn't too far away. His roommate created an account a few days after his death to announce the news, which was kind of him.

I can’t even. My opinions, and I only knew Manwoody REALLY well -

Brude was always KIND. Kind and thoughtful. And he was so thoughtful. He wasn’t going to say something just to say it. He felt it. He was a part of the Board’s beating heart. I was a bit gone from the Board in 2012, and why the fuck was I not here for that, I blame Mark Zuckerberg.  Brude was SOLID. PRUDENT would be my one-word Brudewollen Summary that would be insufficient.

Lilith was an amazing advice-giver. She literally gave me advice more than 20 years ago that to this day, I can see it in my mind’s eye on the screen. And I still follow it, to this day. She was exceptional.

Manwoody - one of my true great regrets in this life. All of everything, for nothing.

If you could all please go to Wagner’s opera “Tristan und Isolde” it would mean a lot. Or go to a ballet. And give some money in memory. I can’t even.

EHK - goddamnit, kid! How could the doctors fail us so much? Dead on the Fourth of July at age 29 with a Gatorade in your hand and having your chest pains dismissed by ER docs. After your mother’s early death from heart attack.

To stay on EHK for a bit, because it is his thread - omg, there were some threads where we were all like WHUT? Like, EHK, you literally cannot drive better drunk, no matter how well you drive.

I had so many interactions with him, as have you all. And that’s what I remember.

According to Mexican tradition (Day of the Dead), in my imperfect memory, we shall be alive for as long as we are remembered. And I remember them - Brudewollen, EHK, Lilith, Manwoody.

I might have lived too long. That I walk this earth and they do not.

Thank you, that is very kind of you (and I wasn't fishing for a compliment!)

The long-standing (pre-TV show) ASoIaF Facebook group lost one one of its most popular and well-known posters last week as well, to cancer. He was only in his 30s and left behind a young son (he used his real name there so I won't use it on a public forum).
