Relic
Buying Twitter and taking it private was basically Musk taking the ball, going home, and stabbing it with a screwdriver. He's doesn't give a fuck what happens, as long as he's the one to burn it to the ground. A 40 billion dollar toy, and we're still not taxing these fuckers. Crazy world. I have a business account with 100k followers on Twitter that we haven't used in months. Everyone should just deactivate their shit and go elsewhere. Kalbear
6 hours ago, Larry of the Lake said: Probably an anecdotal fluke considering how popular they are right now. Seems like most of my customers have an EV now and most of those are Tesla's. Yeah, Tesla in my neck of the woods (Seattle area) is one of the most common cars you see. Especially in more affluent neighborhoods. I think this is more of a Tywin thing than a general thing. 5 hours ago, Gaston de Foix said: Tesla created a very cool product and it remains, frankly, the best car on the market if you can afford it that I've seen. IF you can get one that got done well it's a pretty nice car. But... 3 hours ago, DanteGabriel said: I don't understand the popularity of Tesla, frankly. My brother and I checked out a showroom few years ago, when I still thought they were pretty cool and before Elon's mask had slipped. The fit and finish were pretty shoddy. Three weeks ago he drove his family up from New York to Boston in a rented Tesla (his wife was very interested in one) and they said it rattled all the way up. Are other EVs just that bad? So Teslas are notorious for having bad fit. Other EVs are not remotely like this. This means that test-driving your Tesla is one of the most important things you can do, because it could be you get a great one without problems or it could mean that the front and rear doors aren't in alignment. Lots of stories in the industry about this and it's one of the biggest complaints. This is especially true for the Model 3 and Y - they've not really done a good job of QA or consistent mass production, especially in the US. But still they're very popular cars. 3 hours ago, DanteGabriel said: Mrs Gabriel and I are about to get solar on our house and we're thinking her next car will be a plug-in. Teslas are right out. We might try and hold out for the new VW electric bus. So I owned a Leaf for 8 years and then we got this Tesla. Both were used. I would foremost recommend looking for used electrics first. Probably not a Leaf - they have really bad battery degradation - but other used electrics are pretty great, and you can get them absurdly cheap for what they do. That's why I got a Tesla - I was looking for getting an AWD electric and the only one that would fit my needs was the F150, but looking at used I could get a crazy deal on it as the market has not figured out how to price used electrics with higher mileage appropriately given their reliability. If you are going new and don't necessarily care about AWD I'd go with Kia or Hyundai, but I'd definitely look into used first. And honestly, electric cars are pretty outstandingly awesome. They are simply better to drive in most every single way. DanteGabriel
Kalbear
In more on-topic news, Scalzi had a good writeup on why he's an X-twitterer: https://whatever.scalzi.com/2023/07/24/preparing-my-x-it/ Quote And how does this relate to deciding to leave? Because I had residual affection for Twitter, even after Musk took the wheel and then proceeded to scrape it across several miles of mountain guardrail. I was on the service for fifteen years, and I had a lot of fun chatting, made friends and business connections, and told lots of people about my work and adventures. I don’t have any affection for X. I’m not going to let Musk anywhere near my money, and the current microblogging service, removed from its history as Twitter, is very evidently a flawed entity that valorizes hateful speech and “pay-to-play” positioning in comments and in viewing algorithms, and will not be the main thrust of the X app in any event. I have no more affection for the X microblogging service than I do for Threads, the Meta microblogging service, except to say that Threads is a couple of weeks older and I don’t get nearly as many “verified” users trying to shill bitcoin or porn at me there. dog-days
Deactivated my work Twitter now as well. Does anyone have experience of how the alternatives are faring? Mastodon, BlueSky etc. I've noticed an increase in activity related to an issue I'm interested in on LInkedIn. People posting worthwhile stuff instead of motivational quotes and marketing for their organisations. Shocking.

The Anti-Targ
8 hours ago, Tywin et al. said: I rarely see them. We do need to move to have most cars being EVs, but I hope other companies step it up. It's getting better though. It's not going to get to the market share necessary until you can get a used family sized EV for $2500-$5000 with a range of at least 300km / 150mi. I paid $13,000 for my leaf with a ~100km/65mi range and my son paid about $17,000 for a new Leaf with ~130km range. That is just not good enough for people on low to modest incomes to replace their fuel inefficient clunkers that can still take them across a decent amount of country on a single tank of fuel. If govts want to move the market before affordability of decent range vehicles reaches mass market prices then they are either going to have to provide interest-free loans to low income families or have massively inflated trade in programmes that gives a person $10-$15K for any old road worthy ICE car when being replaced with an EV. One of the problems here is that there aren't enough used EVs on the market even at current prices that have the kind of range people need for their out of town travel. And for me when I say out of town travel I mean simply being able to drive to the nearest airport. Tywin et al.
IheartIheartTesla
I didnt realize there were so damn many Leaf owners on the Board (raises hand). I have the 2017 version which is ~100 mile range - I just charged it today and it went up to 101. Its purely for in-town driving, and during the rather cold Michigan winters the battery range goes down, AND you have to budget ~20 miles range for heating your car. See, ICE cars are so inefficient that they can use waste heat in their process to heat the cars. Unfortunately the only source for heating your car in an electric is the battery. Kalbear
On that note, its getting closer to that for new cars: https://insideevs.com/news/678246/tesla-model-3-price-under-15000-california/ Though like I said used evs (especially teslas) are kind of absurdly underpriced at times, and you can regularly find used teslas with 200+ mile range for under 25k and sometimes far less. See, ICE cars are so inefficient that they can use waste heat in their process to heat the cars. Unfortunately the only source for heating your car in an electric is the battery. For a long time, and even now to some extent, Leafs imported from Japan were the only used EVs available. Substantial sales of new EVs in NZ have only really started happening in the last 5 or so years (and only in double digit % of total new car sales in about the last 2 years), and so the number of non-leaf used cars for sale is still quite a minority. I think cars purchased new here may only become the majority on the used car market in about 5 years time. Until then, if you're not rich and you want an EV then a low range Leaf is your only option, and even then you have to be at least earning close to the median income. So far I have only seen one Uber driver who uses an EV (a Tesla). But I expect that to change fairly rapidly. As to heating - I've wondered why one couldn't have a std ICE car 9V battery as the electricity source for heating, and run an alternator off the drive shaft to charge the battery while the car is running and also direct charge when the car is plugged in? Running an alternator surely uses a negligible amount of the kinetic energy applied to the drive shaft. Is the extra weight of a battery, alternator and separate circuitry to run the heating system the problem?
