UK Politics: Rwanda Rehash

Ships are being targeted because, for years now, the Saudis have been bombing the fuck out of Yemen, killing entire families with British and American weapons.

And nobody gives a shit. Literally nobody.

Maybe the BBC should make a couple of films about their plight.

That's very much not the case.

Houthi rebels have very explicitly stated Israel's military operation in Gaza as their reason.

Which makes sense as they are part of that Iranian backed network of paramilitary organizations in the region (like Hamas or Hezbollah). However, I am genuinely not sure what their supposed endgame was with those attacks on civil ships (other than sending the message, we can put a lot of economic hurt on you if you want to, too). That the US and other nations wouldn't sit by and tolerate this for very long was about as predictable as it gets. The only thing mildly surprising was China being rather moderate with its official language. Those attacks on freight ships wasn't something they presumably wanted either. But apparently China-Iran relations are higher on their priority.

Not just with British and American weapons, but British and American advisors in their situation and planning centres, and British and American groundcrew maintaining the aircraft, rearming and refuelling them. We were up to our neck in the Yemen War, both the US and UK governments liked to pretend we weren't.

New boundaries apparently mean it will take biggest swing in history for labour to win the next election, it should be fine, but still what a weird electoral system we have.  Any right minded person who isn't tactical voting should be pelted with rotten durian.

It was mostly nonsense, but I did think the bbc Vigil s2 did a reasonable job of showing the minor (and major) corruption of British arms industry.

Amused to see 2 deputy chairmen resign from government because a second stage reading, madness!

Home Office hires hangar to practise forcing migrants on to Rwanda flights

Thats nice,  but really if they actually want to fly people to Rwanda, they really should sort out an airfield with the security needed first.  I mean Airlines said NO because of potenial repuational damage.  the RAF said we don't have a suitable airfield with the right security in place for such an operation incase of protests.  give us some money to make one secure.

More money, sure, why not? It’s not like they’ve spent hundreds of millions n this idiotic plan. Oh wait…

And all of it to send a few hundred refugees, something that will have no impact whatsoever on illegal migration. Hmmm I more and more like the SNP campaign slogan:

I'm not too worried about the Rwanda plan until they spend money on the airfields.  Until then the bill is just hotair.

Its gonna get voted down in the lords anyway.  and if not as long as Rwanda keeps its promise and refuses to go along with anything that breaks international law then its still a non-started.

Yeah the money wasted on it is a crime.  but they this government does like spaffing our money on nothing of benefit.  If they did not send it to Rwanda it would only end up in their pockets or donor pockets.

When they say “conservatives are good for the economy” they mean they’re good for their own personal economies since they excel at lining their own pockets.

Conservatives in the UK and US only have one job and goal: make the rich richer. Everything else is bullshit.

ETA: Except of course when it comes to @Spockydog's company which I believe I now have a legally binding 1% stake in. Make that company prosper you evil Tories. Checks are coming soon, right?

Honestly, if I wasn't pacifist adjacent joining the military in a country unlikely to get into a boots on the ground shooting war any time soon seems like a great idea. The military is basically a socialist entity, albeit a dictatorship, but you basically get food, housing, healthcare and education for free. And if you are smart, then you can get a university degree for free, and be even less likely to end up having to point a gun at other people pointing guns at you. The reason for making all that stuff free, of course, is so that the military can be filled up by poor people so the already rich don't have to worry about their kids signing up to possibly be canon fodder. Still, if you can get out of the military alive that's one avenue for upward mobility and the potential to create some inter-generational opportunities for the young'uns. Most people don't get stinking rich from a military life, but they can do all right.

Of course another other way to get out of poverty is professional sports, and you can become stinking rich doing that. But that requires you to have actual talent, so it's a much harder road out of poverty.

UK-Canada trade rift: What it means for cheese, beef and cars

It means Britain gets to keep more of its beef, cheese and cars. Nice! Who doesn't want to have more beef, cheese and cars? I guess it would be kinda nice to be able to swap those things for maple syrup.
