June Reading

I am reading an old science fiction series, The Saga of Pliocene Exile by Julian May. A couple of people kept telling me that I would love it...and so far I do! I have read the first book (of four) The Many Colored Land and am now reading the second, The Golden Torc. The third and fourth books are called The Nonborn King and The Adversary, and I will definately go on to those, as I am enjoying the first two so much. :)

Huge cast of characters with many POV's; complex plot; interesting premise - I am really glad that people kept telling me to read it. :)

I started reading The Dark Tower but I only have The Gunslinger at the moment, so until I can get a chance to go get more, after finishing The Gunslinger I'll probably start reading Dragons of Autumn Twilight the first book of the Dragon Lance Chronicles. Towards the end of the month I'll have to stop reading The Dark Tower and Dragon Lance so that I can re-read Harry Potter before the seventh book comes out.

I finished reading 'Danse Macabre' (Laurell Hamilton) last night. Now, I haven't read anything by Goodkind but 'Danse Macabre' could possibly be the worst thing I will ever read in my life! :ack: A little bit of sex is cool, 500 pages full of nothing but sex is just tedious... A full review is Here

I'm now working my way through 'No Dominion' by Charlie Huston, how vampire books should be written!

The Other Boleyn Girl by Phillipa Gregory. What? It was $4 at the Borders outlet mall store. What? It's not that bad! Really.

yeah, its not bad but does play fast and loose with the historical facts, but hey who would let that interfere with a good bonk?? Somebody bought me Gregory's 'Virgin's Lover' about Elizabeth 1, which I skimmed it was so dire - the most atrocious rendition of Elizabeth I have ever had the misfortune to come across. Will not read anymore.

speaking of Tudor novels, just finished 'Sovereign' by Sansome on holiday and that was much more enjoyable. Good evocation of the tudor court world and lots of grisly torture, death and political backstabbing. A few silly plot twists and an obvious murderer but overall a fun read.

I intend to pick up Omerta by Mario Puzo some time this afternoon. The last of his books I read was The last Don, which I didn't like at all (I didn't finish it), but I'm willing to give Puzo another chance because the Sicilian and the Godfather are two of my favorite books. Also since I don't have anything else to read, it can't hurt.

You know the first books in that series are tightly plotted little mystery stories, and Anita Blake really does hunt down and kill vampires and other other supernatural creatures that are preying upon humans. They are not ground breaking literature, but they are quick and fun reads. And there is no sex at all, though there is plenty of action scenes!!!

And then the author suddenly decided to completely change genres from mystery stories to really poorly written pornography. Emphasis on the "poorly written". I like well written sex scenes as much as the next person, but these sex scenes are just gawd awful.

And the stories went from being tightly plotted to not having any plot whatsoever.

I kept reading for awhile, as I hoped the author might go back to including a plot and characterization and other things that I like in books. ;)

But Danse Macabre was so terrible I have sworn off of this series. I literally see no way that she can salvage this series or these characters.

I have only read like the first four Hamilton Anita Blake books, and like you said, they are pretty decent. I was warned about the "poorly written" porn before I started though, so I never planned on reading past...I think its narcisus in chains. Her Meredith Gentry novels aren't that bad, from what I've read so far, I know of like them, though Meredith isn't as cool a character as Anita. Have you seen where I think it's Dark Horse is putting out comic books? I've seen book one of Guilty Pleasures and have been thinking about getting them.

I'm plowing through the Harry Dresden series right now, but I would also like to read the Stephenson I have. I don't remember the title.

Need to finish AFFC, too!

I recently read the icewind dale trilogy, as well as the 5 stories by eddings in the belgariad series.

finishing up The Chronicles of Prydian, book 1

Also starting the Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe

If you liked the Belgaraid, you might want to look into the Elenium...its a good read, and short, like three books long, and those characters I like a little bit more than the Belgaraid characters...though CeNadra is by far my favorite of his characters...and maybe Belgarath.

Just started Anna Gavalda's Hunting and Gathering. In general, I am enamoured with French Literature; Anna Gavalda writes very nicely, it's a perfect summer read -- easy page turner, love story which is sad, desperate, heartbreaking and at the same time the book is warm and funny. THe dialogue is snappy and funny. I like her a lot.

'Danse Macabre' is the only book that has inspired such a strong negative reaction in me that I've taken it into the garden and burnt it! That felt good...

To restore my faith in vampire books, I read 'No Dominion' by Charlie Huston. No sex, just vampires kicking the crap out of each other on the mean streets of New York, great stuff :smoking: I've posted a review Here ;)

I'm now about a hundred pages into 'Reapers Gale' and it's good to be back :D

Finished Brasyl ten minutes ago. Brilliant book. It threatened to go a bit Stephen Baxter-taking-the-wondrous-and-turning-it-mundane towards the end, but McDonald turned it around in rare style for a deliciously bizarre ending (even if Red Dwarf fans will be yelling, "Reality Patrol!" throughout the last few chapters). Review on the blog forthcoming.

Will probably read Cormac McCarthy's The Road next and see if my funds can withstand shelling out for the pretty-expensive-for-its-size Night of Knives.

I finished Red Seas Under Red Skies by Scott Lynch - this one is as much fun as the first, and better written. Most certainly recommended (full review).

Next up will either be Mainspring by Jay Lake or New Amsterdam by Elizabeth Bear.
