Bronn Stone
It must be very relaxing letting ESPN and the Tribune do your thinking for you. ETA: Elway career totals after year 4: Rating : 71.9 Completion Pct. : 54% Avg Yards per Att. : 6.7 TD : 66 INT : 65 Grossman career totals after year 4: Rating : 72.4 Completion Pct. : 54% Avg Yards per Att. : 6.7 TD : 27 INT : 26 And basically none of you have seen enough Rex Grossman to evaluate him, and absolutely none of you have any basis to claim that the above comparison is non completely appropriate. Yet you have seen him enough to determine he'll be MVP. If you've seen ten Bears games with Rex at the helm, you've seen all you need to see. To pretend otherwise is just making yourself look even stupider than usual.
Mexal
Btw, just on a side note, I am completely appalled that Joey Porter is not getting suspended. He jumped another NFL player. If it was a random incident, ok, but another NFL player? I'm at a loss for words.
DanteGabriel
What is the Jets RB situation now? The Jets picked up Thomas Jones in the offseason, which makes me think that they'll give the Pats a lot more trouble than some of my fellow Pats fans may be expecting. Especially with their recent excellent OL draft picks.
Bazzlebane
That's a good move for them. I assume Kevan Barlow has been waived? God he got useless in a hurry.
DanteGabriel
That's a good move for them. I assume Kevan Barlow has been waived? God he got useless in a hurry. Barlow got released, but he signed with the Steelers. According to ESPN, the Steelers signed him because they're still looking to fill the role of power back that Jerome Bettis fulfilled. I laughed out loud.
Bazzlebane
When you need a power game, there is nothing better than a 235-lb running back who likes to slow down approaching the line of scrimmage, pause, consider which hole he likes, and dance three times before running forward. Straight into his guard's back. And I actually thought Barlow was going to be good when he was a part time player behind Garrison Hearst. Somehow it all went very, very wrong. I think Barlow confused marijuana for a performance enhancing drug. Given the way he runs, I think he smokes it in the huddle.
Ser Paladin
The Jets picked up Thomas Jones in the offseason, Jones catches the ball well, too, a wrinkle that the AFC East doesn't get a whole lot of recently. Well, I don't think I saw Willis McGahee play while he was with the Bills, but I don't remember him being a Faulk or Westbrook, or even a Pittman kind of RB. ETA: Yes, I know Sammy Morris and Maroney had some reception out of thebackfield skills, but they were not the featured RBs.
Bazzlebane
Marshawn Lynch, the high pick by the Bills, also has great hands out of the backfield. I don't know if the Bills have any kind of o-line for him to run behind, but he should definitely be used as a receiver.
ZANNI_1276
My favorite time of year - training camp. Where everyone has hopes and dreams of this being the year - and you think - maybe my team is this years SAINTS and you hope that your team is not last years Giants (LOL!) My quick (maybe not quick but predictions/analysis of just some stuff) observation w/some feedback from what i have read from some posts here... - a lot of people giving the PATs some love. They had a great offseason and adding Thomas, Welker (future fantasy stud w/Brady) and one of 2007 penintentiary-league champs Bengals reciever plus the human cancer Moss they improved a very solid club and probably are the front to take it all but no one has mentioned the COLTS - they didn't loose anything Also I don't get the love affair with the JETS - ManGenius is a solid coach but with NO defense and QB that is fragiller than my 82 year grandmother I think they will have a difficult time grabbing a wild card spot and also with the ALL WORLD MALCONTENT RB Thomas Jones they acquired just makes the pick a bigger quagmire. Breakdown of predicts - like everything else this can go down in flames quicker that LeCharles Bentley in training camp maybe i will do the nfc later..: AFC EAST: Winner: PATS - tough not too! SLEEPER: BILLS - sounds crazy but if the D holds up they will improve, even with LossMan BASEMENT: Dolphins - I just hate Joey Porter - aging Defense - and NO QB AFC SOUTH: Winner: COLTS - Pencil the AFC championship game vs. PATS right SLEEPER: JAGS - if they had any + production at QB and a reciever that could catch they would be dangerous - didn't they sign Dennis Northcutt? Like I said if they had any recivers. Probably the most punishing Defense in the NFL - they hurt you BASEMENT: Texans - Still : XPANSION - Matt Schaub is may be great or he is Scott Mitchell - time will tell AFC NORTH: WINNER: Bengals - do or die for these guys - let's see the talent finally come to play SLEEPER: Baltimore - not really a sleeper - best division in football and as much as i hate - no despise them they are going to be a tough out BASEMENT: BROWNS - makes me want to cry -- i keep waiting for them to fill in the holes on this roster and for the first time since they have come back i don't want to get rid of my season tickets AFC WEST: WINNERS: Broncos - good team, solid, great coach and i love the qb SLEEPER: NO ONE - i say this because San Diego is an excellent club but two words: NORV TURNER BASEMENT: Raiders - DUH!?! Like I said these are just pridictions - hopes and dreams baby. I can't wait to get to Berea to watch my beloved yet pathetic Browns and dream of better tomorrow - when the sports page doesn't read like the ploice blotter, WR's stop acting like prom queens and September 9th 2007 is finally here... Ser Paladin
Breakdown of predicts ... SLEEPER: JAGS - if they had any + production at QB and a reciever that could catch they would be dangerous - didn't they sign Dennis Northcutt? Like I said if they had any recivers. Probably the most punishing Defense in the NFL - they hurt you ... SLEEPER: Baltimore - not really a sleeper - best division in football and as much as i hate - no despise them they are going to be a tough out Another new guy with something interesting to say. Welcome to the scrum, Zanni. I like most of your selections, but have comments on a couple: I think the Jaguars will be lucky to be .500 this year. But there are no other options out of the AFC South, so I don't fault your sleeper pick. I do, however, think the Ravens are a 12-4 or 11-5 team. Bengals, much as I enjoy them, would be a surprise to win that division. And the Broncos will give the Chargers a run in the West. Norv isn't great, but he isn't as bad as you all make him out to be. Don't forget, he's replacing Shottenheimer, who is no great shakes. But I really feel like the Broncos have put together the right pieces this year. They are my sleeper AFC Super Bowl pick. Kalnestk Oblast
It might be interesting to compare Grossman's running skills to Elway after 4 years and see what the difference is there. My suspicion is that Elway will show up as a guy who could run well as well as pass, and Grossman will be shown to be sack-prone and fumble prone. Oh yeah - compare fumbles too! Good times. Or to cut to the chase: Elway through 4 years: Att Yards YPC TD Long 28 146 5.2 1 23 56 237 4.2 1 21 51 253 5.0 0 22 52 257 4.9 1 24 Grossman: Att Yards YPC Long TD FD Fum Lost 3 -1 -0.3 0 0 0 2 0 3 11 48 4.4 8 1 4 0 0 2 0 0 0.0 0 0 0 0 0 16 24 2 0.1 22 0 4 3 2 Elway did lose 8 fumbles, but given that he started almost 50 more games, that's not a surprise. ZANNI_1276
Thank you for the hello Ser Paladin- i am a bit of a lurker but i have posted in the past. I have to disagree with you about Turner - he is terrible and will single handedly turn them into a non-contender. He is like that guy in your office that has worked at 50 different places and at first you are like "man this guy is it, how can anyone let him go - they must have been crazy!" and six months later you are firing him b/c he has not a clue...As far as the JAGS - man, i have seen them play in person and really they are punishing, opposing offenses are actually scared of these guys - if they had any assemblence of an offense they would be a force - Here is my NFC predicts and there has to be a side note: I think they NFC is weak, half of these teams wouldn't hack in the AFC. Dallas is fine but you heard this hear: TONY ROMO IS A BUST - 6 game wonder - trust me; 5 years from now here is the headline: DETROIT LIONS SIGN ROMO - and in small script you will read: Tony Romo was bagging groceries 6 months ago after being cut from the ARENA LEAGUE when Matt Millen contacted him to try out for the 3-13 Lions...Mark my words his named will be likened to Tommy Maddox... NFC EAST: Cowboys - not sure about these guys and i think this is w/out a doubt the most over rated conference in NATIONAL FOOTBALL LEAGUE SLEEPER: Eagels - McNabb comes back they will be alright. THis is the year where we transition the phrase "the eagels are a mature veteran team" to "the eagles maybe on the downside and long in the tooth" BASEMENT: SKINS - Poor Joe reminds me of that guy at your corner bar who says "Back in my day Kids were respectful, walked old ladies across the street" sort of thing - the game has passed him by NFC SOUTH: WINNER: SAINTS - I love this team, talent, heart and character - balanced attck, good D SLEEPER: Panthers - Fox has to rebound; I hear it already...Bill Cower is going to turn these guys around...AGH BASEMENT: Falcons - What are the odds on Arthur Blank will be checking into rehab for a driniking problem say around October? Bet Vick can lay odds on that one NFC NORTH: Winner: Bears - lovie is great - balanced team. I am of the "rex grossman is going to be good QB" camp - let's not get hasty and compare #'s to Elway though....Think Jake Plummer minus the dozens of interceptions...maybe DETROIT: I am not going to call them a sleeper but i am going to say the better win at least 8 games or Jon Kitna will be the ass of many jokes. Great WR's AWSOME - but they are a big 0 on Defense The rest of the teams suck - no hope in Green Bay other than John Madden is petitioning same sex marriages in the state of Wisc so his life long dream of having man love with Brett Favre can be a reality and the VIKES are getting better but come on Tavarious Jackson nor Brooks Bollinger? Good thing they don't have anyone to throw to - the rookie should have about 500 carries and a torn ACL by November... NFC WEST: WINNER: RAMS - this divison is going to be fun - i have vested interest b/c my FF franchise players are Jackson and Alexander - Rams are going to be tougher than you think... Sleeper: TIE - 49ers and Cardinals. 49ers are everyone's sexy pick and i think they will be vastly improved BUT the Cardinals are going to be tough - culture change thier and the potential fire power is there on offense - just wait and see about the D * I also have to put the Seahwaks as well - this can go anyway - If Seatle is any other division in the NFC they win it, but I have one of those gut feelings about the Hawks' that about the 8th week the commentators are going to be giving the whole "If they don't pick it up this year is fried chicken" sort of thing. SUPER BOWL PREDICT: PATS V SAINTS - in a absolute drudging the PATS give the AINTS a swirly at the bowl...

THis is the year where we transition the phrase "the eagels are a mature veteran team" to "the eagles maybe on the downside and long in the tooth" The Eagles are relentless in cutting loose older players, so they aren't that long in the tooth. It's another 10-6 seaason, maybe 11-5 or better if McNabb is healthy all year. But I will be surprised if he Cowboys can muddle themselves out of the middle of the pack this year. New Coach, volatile pesonalities, fragile QB, interfering owner. Not a recipe for success. DETROIT: I am not going to call them a sleeper but i am going to say the better win at least 8 games or Jon Kitna will be the ass of many jokes. Great WR's AWSOME - but they are a big 0 on Defense I'm on the Detroit bandwagon this year. I think they are a mortal lock for at least 7 wins barring a Kitna injury (faint praise, I know). I would not be surprised to see them pull off a 9-7 wild card berth. SUPER BOWL PREDICT: PATS V SAINTS - in a absolute drudging the PATS give the AINTS a swirly at the bowl... The favorites never go to the Super Bowl. This is like picking the Colts and Bears last year. As usual, I'll throw my predictions up aainst the wall in a few weeks. Honestly - that is half the reason i predicted it. I am so sick of the PATS i truly hope my dumb ass is wrong and it goes awry - do like the Aints in the JUCO NFC though. Ah, Detroit, i'm a midwest guy and i hope they do ok - hell who know what will happen in Chicago - maybe Grossman is really Dave Kraig incarnated and they go right down the slippery highway of mediocrity - the Defense is not going to consistently score like they did last year, yes i said score, thier defense bailed them out so many games last year - one less fumble recovery/interception/special team touchdown and record wise you are looking at quite an average team. So who knows but you are right in that respect as picking at the begining of camp - of course you nod to the favorites and then next thing you know, one knee pops, an indictment and BOOM - you are out of the hunt... DanteGabriel
I'm being so cautiously optimistic about the Pats that I'm being borderline pessimistic. There's way too much pat commentary and conventional wisdom just assuming that they'll be the top guns in the AFC (serious commenters, of course, can forego discussing any NFC team as a serious championship contender). The Moss thing looked to me like gilding the lily. I would have been perfectly happy with picking up just Welker and Stallworth to bolster the WR core. Don't know enough about Kelley Washington to have an opinion on him. I'm not sold on Maroney carrying the whole load this year, and I'm praying that he only looked so hesitant at the end of last season because of his injury. As far as the LBs go, I think it's a terrible sign that the Pats picked up Chad Fucking Brown for another year. I got pretty sick of watching him and Beisel getting their asses pushed backwards by running backs in 2005. He lost his starting job in 2005 in favor of guys like Banta-Cain, and barely saw the field in 2006, I can't understand why they thought he'd be a worthwhile pickup two years later. Couldn't they have made a run at Donnie Edwards if they were looking for yet another old linebacker? Anyway. I'll hope for the best and be bitterly unsurprised by the worst. Stego
Caliban, You have set a new mark for insanity in Ranland NFL threads. Kudos. Jets, Chargers, Ravens, Colts, Pats, Jags, Broncos...... 7 teams enter, one team leaves. Can't wait.
Annelise
Wrt Detroit. IMO, they have to show they can wrap their minds around winning. The current finger pointing for their troubles is at Millen, at least in the opinion of many fans. Whatever the case, the chronic lack of confidence you see in the fans, also goes for the organization, IMO. That's a real stumbling block, IMO, as much as any talent issues. Just like a winning tradition can help lift a team up, a losing one can drag a team down (and does, IMO, in their case).
Space Bandito
I'm just waiting for training camp. I want to see how the running back situation works itself out. Way to early to worry. Caliban, you just might convert me to Rex by preseason.
