RULES

All players must ..

1) Have an account on the the mafia discussion board, with the same account name as on this board.

2) Log in and view the thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons

3) Post at least once every 30 hours. Any player who has not posted within the last 30 hours will be automatically modkilled, whether or not the mods announce this on the thread. There will be no exceptions.

4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit

5) Treat everybody else playing with courtesy and respect.

6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if they feel they are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so.

Players must not ...

1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of a faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

4) Give anybody access to any of their accounts (including game alts, if the game is using them), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread.

7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.

8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts accidently made after death should be immediately edited blank.

9) Make any bets about the game.

10) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

AND JUST SO YOU KNOW

1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something.

-------------------------

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler spectator thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. If you have not posted on the spoiler board before and are not currently playing the game, please sign up on the spoiler board and post in the introduction thread before asking for spoiler access. Please not that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

1) Share any information from the spoiler spectator thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

3) Make personal attacks

4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and/or to be reported to the metamods.

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure
Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. Many games also have time limits on the days, and if no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase
During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics
To vote for a player: bold that player's name.
To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.
To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).
To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions
You may only vote during the day phase. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions
The use of bold should be limited to voting. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined
A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day
The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the game has a day time limit and the players fail to achieve a majority, once the time limit has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene
The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player’s alt or alignment. This is the mods’ choice, and they’ll explain what, if any, information will be revealed in the game rules. There are no hidden clues in the evening scenes.

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. Once again, the mods decide which roles will be included for their game, so be sure to fully read the game rules and any role descriptions which may be included.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action
If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear to the roled players, and, usually, to all other players as well. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. Most games have a time limit on nights. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible. You may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM
If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM
You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM
In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM
If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action
PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit
If the mods have included a night time limit, it begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions
Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene
The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player’s alt or alignment. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame
The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions
The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in a later post.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene
The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early
The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers
When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

ALT RULES

In this game all the players will be using alts.

2) Players must not change the password to their game alt that the mods picked for them.

When posting in the game thread, all active players must take care not to:

1) Post using any account other than their game alt. Any posts made 'out of alt' must be edited blank, and players must not make any comment on their contents in the game thread.

2) Deliberately reveal any information relating to the identity behind the alt of any player (living or dead) or to any aspect of their identity (including their geographic location and their level of experience in playing mafia).

3) Speculate about the identity behind the alt of any player (living or dead) or on any aspect of their identity (including their geographic location and their level of experience in playing mafia).

1) Either confirm or deny if they are playing in the game if this information may be seen by living players.

Roles

These roles will be used:

INNOCENT FACTION:

The Knight (roleless innocent):

All you want is to serve in the Kingsguard. Your sword arm is well trained, but you are lacking the wits to see more than what is in front of you. That's why you have no special abilities to uncover the Faceless Men.

EVIL FACTION:

The Faceless Man (FM):

Damn, the king already promised you a place at his Kingsguard, and now these losers forced him to retract his decision. Well, you will teach these fools a lesson that they won't forget easily.

Your partner is / your partners are ...... You are allowed to communicate outside the thread at all times. Each night you must send the mods the name of one player that you wish to remove from the game. In case that there is no other interfering action, this player is not allowed to post anymore with the beginning of the next day; he will travel to castle Spoiler instead to write rants and curses at every wall.

The Secret Sympathizer (symp):

Well, the thing is that you know who the Faceless Men are, but you won't betray them. Queen Visenya (or was it Queen Rhaenys?) visited your chamber last night. She told you that the king felt uncomfortable about the knights who were already promised a place in the kingsguard. That's why Aegon decided to increase the chances of the Faceless Men by giving them one or more secret sympathizers to help them win the game. The Faceless Men don't know who you are, but you know their identities. If the Faceless men will win the game, you will join the Kingsguard together with them.

If there is a finder, he will get an innocent investigation result on you.

These roles might be used for both factions:

The Charming Guy (coroner finder):

The Seven have blessed you with a good looking face and an entertaining mind. You are able to change a funeral into an orgy, if necessary, and although you have been at the Red Keep only for one day, you have made many friends amongst the guards. They are even willing to help you to get a place in the Kingsguard, but they do not dare to risk the king’s anger, so their help is very limited.

Each time when someone has to leave the game, they will pass you a note secretly, which tells you if the guy was a Faceless Man or not.

The Observer (one-shot-finder):

Your father not only took care that you got an excellent fighting practice; he also was adamant that you participated when he travelled through the villages of his lordship. There you could observe how some of your father's countrymen tried to cheat when it came to paying their taxes. And you learned how to distinguish a liar from an honest man. However, you were more interested in practicing your sword arm than in anything else, so you never became as good as your father in judging people rightly. After all you will be able to tell a judgment about one of your fellow comrades. Therefore you have to watch this person for one day and night circle to get an accurate evaluation. Unfortunately, you are only able to detect strong lies, which is why a symp will escape your attention with his lies.

This is a day action. PM the name of the player you wish to investigate to the mods at some time during the day, and you will get the investigation result with the beginning of the next day.

The Rake (martyr):

Are you the only one who took a look at the fine print? No sex?

NO SEX!!!!!!!!!!

Man, you really don't know if you will be able to handle this. All the hot ladies will be at the king's court, and you are not allowed to give them some comfort? If it was that what you were looking for, you would have volunteered to join the Night's Watch (black is so much cooler than white). No, you have serious doubts about your future in the Kingsguard, so you think about giving someone else the chance to enter the service of the king in your stead. However, you still have a remaining piece of honour to sacrifice yourself only for a worthy contestant.

Each night you may PM the name of a player. If that player should be chosen by the Faceless Men that night, you will leave the community in his place. This action is optional, but you must use your power once in the first three nights. You may only choose a player that is in the upper half of the posters.

The Sore Loser (soldier):

You are a brave knight and you fiercely obey all the standards of knightdom. Still, you never accepted defeat, and not only once you lost your nerves and broke the rules only to prevent your opponent from winning.

In case that only you and one of the Faceless Men should be the last remaining players, you will smash his grinning head against the next best wall until he finally gives up. Too bad, so sad.....

The Squealer (ninja):

You are a squealer. You like to see other people suffer for their misdoings, so if you will ever come to the conclusion that one of these fellows here is a Faceless Man, you will grass him to the king. You were always very ingenious when it came to find a reason to punish someone, if you could not say the truth outright (especially when you were involved yourself), but it's really not that important for what that blackguard is punished, but that he is punished.

If you want to grass another player to the king, say "I grass player X to the king for [invent disconcerting reason]!" Only the ninja is allowed to use that phrase in the thread, any other player will be modkilled if he should try to write this. The king will send the brassed player home to shame his familiy, but Aegon also does not want a kingshuard that is not loyal to his brothers, so you also have to pack your belongings and bury your dreams of honour and glory as a member of the Kingsguard.

The Sweetheart (one-time-bulletproof):

You've got something that is very rare amongst the knights of Westeros - a heart-rending glance. It saved your ass from spanking more than once in your childhood (you were a real hellion) when you got into mischief. Even King Aegon is not immune to that special power of yours, so he will give you one more chance in case that the Faceless Men tell him that it's your turn to leave. However, your glance will only help you once in the game, because the commiseration of a bloody conqueror is rather limited.

It was a long journey from your father's castle and your horse was near to exhaustion as the meandering street finally reached the top of the hill. Your father told you to hurry as fast as possible to the new king, who has finally returned to the place where he started his conquest. In the far distance you could see the Blackwater finishing his voyage into the bay that was named right after the river. You didn't know what you quite expected to see, but certainly not this. Of course, you knew that King Aegon immediately build a castle after he landed at the Blackwater. The castle was less impressive than you thought, but then you also didn't expect to see the tiny village growing around the castle. You estimated the numbers of houses and cottages somewhere between 50 and 100. On a lonely hill near the sea, you could spot workers building a huge building that the sunset was painting a deep red.

After a while you finally made your way to down to the castle where Aegon the Dragon King was waiting for you. A few days ago, a mounted envoy arrived at your castle with news that probably changed your life forever. "King Aegon is looking for knights to join his newly founded Kingsguard", the envoy said. Your father at once realized that this was an excellent opportunity for your house to get access to the royal court. He didn't like Aegon a bit, but with the power of the dragons it seemed like the Targaryen rule over the six kingdoms would remain for a longer time. Since you are a good swordsman who has slain several knights in battle, your father has decided to send you to the king's court. You were more than excited to become a king's guard - after all you gained your knighthood only a few months ago, and you were ready to experience new adventures in the big exciting world that was waiting all around your small and boring family's seat. A young squire with black hair and a stag on his breast took care for your horse after you arrived at the castle. Full of self-confidence and curious about what would come you passed the gateway behind which Aegon the Conqueror was waiting for you.

* * * * *

Another squire accompanied you to a large hall, and you could hear several male voices laughing and shouting. As you were entering the hall, you could see more than a dozen young knights in their finest dresses. You never were the best in heraldry, but even without that knowledge you recognized that they were from all the six kingdoms, except the North which refused the idea of knighthood. Aegon had made it clear that only knights may enter the new Kingsguard. Not one of these faces was common to you, and much of your confidence has left you already when you entered the hall. In its midst stood a big round table, and you quickly took one of the free seats. Not sure what to do, you decided to observe your contenders. You noticed the mistrust and unsteadiness behind all the boosting words and jokes. "In the future we might all be brothers, but right now we are all enemies", you suddenly realized. Only seven would enter the office of a Kingsguard after all.

And then all of the sudden there was silence in the hall. Everyone was gazing at the headside of the hall, where King Aegon was entering the hall accompanied by his two sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys and some nobles. "I see that I have your attention", Aegon said loudly. "But it is more than your attention that I want to have for the future. I want your lives. Are you willing to sacrifice yourself for your king?" the King shouted. After a moment of silence, a young knight fell on his knee, shouting: "Hail the Conqueror. Hail the Dragon King. Our lives for King Aegon!" and then everyone was on one knee and praising the king.

* * * * *

Now you are lying in your bed, drunk and the echoes of the king's words are filling your head. You remember the disappointment when you heard that some knights already had been chosen to serve in the Kingsguard. But then, some places still were free, and now everyone was even more willing to get hold of one of the remaining white cloaks, which should be the emblem of the new Kingsguard. However, some of the knights did not accept the king's preselection. To everyone's surprise, Aegon agreed that it wasn't a good idea. "Only the best shall be a member in my Kingsguard", he said. It was his sisters who had the idea to create a contest, in which every knight could proof his value. "We know that you all know how to handle a sword, but serving your king in the Kingsguard also means that you have to protect him from intrigues and conspiracies", Visenya explained, and Rhaenys continued: "The game that we have in mind is an old one from Valyria. Some of you will work together secretly against the rest of you. Those are the Faceless Men. Each night they will choose one out of your midst who shall be sent home. Each day, all of you decide who has to leave the Red Keep at dusk. Not surprisingly, the Faceless Men will be those knights who our brother has chosen before you arrived in King's Landing. This guarantees that the Faceless Men will do everything to win this little game. If one of them escapes your attention, all the Faceless Men will return to the castle and enter the Kingsguard. If you are able to discover them all, the rest of you still here will take the white cloaks."

These were the words that you cannot forget. Tomorrow would be the start of the game that should decide about your future, and the Targaryens would take care of it themselves. You swear to yourself that you won't disappoint your king, your father and yourself. You know that you are a worthy member of the Kingsguard, and tomorrow you are going to show them what it means to mess with you

It is day 1.

15 players remain: Bar Emmon, Connington, Corbray, Erenford, Fell, Florent, Grandison, Hayford, Mallister, Merryweather, Plumm, Pommingham, Smallwood, Tollett, Wythers.

8 votes are needed for a conviction or to go to night.

15 players have not voted: Bar Emmon, Connington, Corbray, Erenford, Fell, Florent, Grandison, Hayford, Mallister, Merryweather, Plumm, Pommingham, Smallwood, Tollett, Wythers.

There haven't even been any votes yet! What a boring game.

How do we know you are not lying?

And what do you have against jokes? Were you picked on a bit too much as a squire?
