Firstly a warning. this is not going to be a vanilla game. It will have a few quirks. Be warned. We are doing everything in our power to make sure the game is balanced.

16 players, all signed up and accounted for. :-)

If you want to join us in spoiler heaven, or fancy some unspoiled fun, just let us know. :-) Also, we'll be happy to take applications for reserves in case of day 1 modkill.

Specific Game Mechanics:

1) This game will not have a generic nigth scene CF. However, it will have a CF role.
2) The time limit for days is 28 Hours per day. This is up for discussion, and as such provisional. PM me if you have strong feelings.
3) The time limit for nights is 8 hours per night. Roled players are strongly recommended to send in provisional actions during the day.
4) We will not use replacements in this game except on day 1 if replacements are available.
5) There will be alts, but with fairly weak alt rules.

Winning Conditions:
The City Watch: The best of the best, the pride of Ankh Morpork, Sammies. You win when your brilliant detective powers shine through and allow you to apprehend the would-be assassins. Should they resist arrest, well, Detrius has his crossbow with him, and it's armed.
The Inhumers: It seems Lord Downey has his own men inside the watch, ready to act. You win when you are the only ones left alive, and can therefore frame Chrysoprase.
The Breccia: Chrysoprase also has men in the watch. Well, men in the watch owe him favours, which ammounts to the same thing (if you know what's good for you). You win when you are the only ones left alive, and can therefore frame Lord Downey.

Most of these are standard rules. If anything contradicts, just ask. The main changes will be in the alt section, and maybe mechanics liek game length. Please note, mechanics like game length are subject to change during balancing / planning. However, we won't have over 48 hour or under 24 hour game days. :-)

Also, I will be trialling some kind of sin bin. Probably a very lenient one, just to see how it affects the flow of a game. Hopefully we won't need it at all. If we do, I'll try to keep it light hearted and write it into the game as a mini-scene.

RULES

All players must ..

1) Have an account on the the mafia discussion board, with the same account name as on this board.

2) Log in and view the thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons

3) Post at least once every 24 hours. Any player who has not posted within the last 24 hours will be automatically modkilled, whether or not the mods announce this on the thread. Note, this is an ABSOLUTE minimum. I'd be dissapointed with anyone who only posted one post a day.

NOTE - If anybody reaches modkill time on day 1, I will try to replace the player. There will only be replacements on day 1 of the game. If a replacement cannot be found, the player will be modkilled.

4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit

5) Treat everybody else playing with courtesy and respect. I will be trialling a Sin-Bin of some sort, where if it gets beyond a friendly warning, you may be hit with post restrictions for a short period. I won't modkill unless seriously crosses the line.

6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if they feel they are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so.

Players must not ...

1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of a faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

4) Give anybody access to any of their accounts (including game alts, if the game is using them), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread.

7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.

8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts accidently made after death should be immediately edited blank.

9) Make any bets about the game.

10) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

AND JUST SO YOU KNOW

1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something.

-------------------------

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler spectator thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. If you have not posted on the spoiler board before and are not currently playing the game, please sign up on the spoiler board and post in the introduction thread before asking for spoiler access. Please not that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

1) Share any information from the spoiler spectator thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

3) Make personal attacks

4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and/or to be reported to the metamods.

--------------------

(If you've played before, you probably don't need to read this section. If you have any questions, PM the mods.)

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure
Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when a sufficient number of people have voted to lynch a player (remove that player from the game) or voted to end the day without a lynch. Many games also have time limits on the days, and if no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Players may continue posting in the thread but no voting is allowed. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase
During the day, players may post in the thread and vote. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics
To vote for a player: bold that player's name.
To vote to end the day without a lynch: bold the word night.
To change your vote: bold the other player's name (or bold night).
To remove your vote without casting a new vote: bold the phrase remove vote.

2.2 - Voting Restrictions
You may only vote during the day phase. You can only have one vote outstanding at any time. You may not vote for yourself. You may not edit a vote into a post. You may not edit a vote out of a post.

2.3 - Bold Restrictions
The use of bold should be limited to voting. If you want to emphasize a players name or another word, you can underline the word or post using a different color

2.4 - Majority Defined
A majority means either more than half of the active players voting for one player's lynch or half or more of the active players voting to go to night without a lynch.

2.5 - Ending the Day
The day ends as soon as a majority is reached (or, if the game has a day time limit and the players fail to achieve a majority, once the time limit has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread. Votes can no longer be withdrawn and new votes cannot be cast until the night phase ends.

2.6 - Evening Scene
The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player's alt or alignment. This is the mod's choice, and they'll explain what, if any, information will be revealed in the game rules. There are no hidden clues in the evening scenes.

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread but may not vote. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. Once again, the mods decide which roles will be included for their game, so be sure to fully read the game rules and any role descriptions which may be included.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action
If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear to the roled players, and, usually, to all other players as well. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. Most games have a time limit on nights. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible. You may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM
If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM
You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM
In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM
If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action
PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit
If the mods have included a night time limit, it begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions
Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene
The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player's alt or alignment. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame
The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions
The goodie faction/s can win only if all baddies are dead. The baddie factions can win only seperately, after killing everybody else. The symp wins only if his masters win. A symp left alone means everyone loses.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene
The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early
The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers
When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board.

ALT RULES

In this game all the players will be using alts.

However, we will be using a very loose set of alt rules.

This is a Masquerade. Therefore;

Do not discuss or hint towards the identity of other players. Do not outright announce your own identity.

However, "I'm a very experienced player", "I'm off to work, or that maths exam now" or "The husband's brought back fish and chips for dinner tonight" are all fine. Basically, anything short of "I can't say my name, but it ryhmes with Fasonity" is okay.

Ditto, you can call House Blackbeard "obviously new", just not "clearly Masonity"

These are the factions:

Watchmen: You are a loyal member of Sir Samuel Vimes' City Watch. You are brave, intelligent and well versed in modern policing.

Inhumers: To an onlooker, you are yet another Watchman. The truth of the matter,
however, is you are a sleeper agent. You was a scholarship boy at the Guild, and as such still have enough of the stench of Morpork on you to pass as a normal copper. However, you have been trained to kill, and will do so to protect your guild with absolutely no remorse.

Breccia: You may look like a normal copper, but you are as bent as they come. Unfortunately, said bentness has left you owing one too many favours to the local troll mafia. You will also kill with no remorse in order to expunge the debt. After all, it's them or us!

Symp: The higher ups might not always trust their trusted minions. When this is the case, they tend to hire a third party to watch them, try to keep them out of trouble, and generally make sure the task is performed adequetly. Said third parties are far more cunning than evil killers who kill though, and will show up Innocent to anyone but an actively searching Symp finder.

Please note: In case of low player turnout, one or both FM team may be made SK instead for balancing reasons.

The following roles MAY be used, and may belong to ANY faction:

Good Policeman: You learnt well under Mr. Vimes, and as such are a master of the crime scene. If someone shows up dead, you will be able to tell if they are a killing killer who kills, or a watching watchman who watches.(Coroner Finder)

Bad Policeman: You learnt extrodinarily badly under Mr. Vimes. The idea of "clues" hit home, but all that analysing stuff flew straight past. If someone shows up dead, you will, after a breif investigation, beleive them to be of the oposit faction to their true faction. Needless to say, every bad Policeman think's he's a very good policeman. (Insane Coroner Finder)

Partners: You two have been on the beat together so long you can't remember a time when you weren't together. There are ways you can communicate without anyone else even realising it! (Friends)

Sgt. Angua: There are rumours of a werewolf in the watch. You are that wolf. Every night, you are able to use your amazing sense of smell to discover if someone's true to their faction or not. Unfortunately, the Inhumers and Breccia ARE loyal to their own faction, and as such are indistinguishable from common watchmen. (Symp Finder)

Captain Carrot: A six foot tall "dwarf", rumoured to be the true king of Ankh Morpork? If someone tries to night kill Carrot, he'll sit down with them, give them a stern lecture and send them on their way. The second time, however, he won't be so lucky, and instead will find a knife in his back. (One Shot bullet-proof)

Seamstress: Under that mask isn't a policeman at all, but rather a seamstress. You came along hoping to see a real watchmans balls. Every night, you can lead one lucky chap or another off into the corner, where he'll have a grand time, for a fee. However, this leaves them no time to carry out any other actions that night. (Guard)

Igor: You stitch people back together. However, killers are pretty swift, and you don't have long to act, so can only watch one person per night, ready to save their life. (Healer)

History Monk: Armed with the latest in monk technology, you can freeze time for a few moments, kill someone you feel is a threat to the time lines, then resume with your dancing as if nothing happened. However, you only have one such time-bomb. (Vigilante)

Hero:No-one realises it, but you really are a hero at heart. Should you be nightkilled, you will heroicly kill your assailant. If there are two, you'll kill whichever one PMed the Mod with the action. (new role i think?)

Moist Von Lipwig The hangman's lynch holds plenty of fear for you. Only should you actually face it, your neck will slip straight through, as an angel offers you a second chance. Be aware though, there are no third chances in Ankh-Morpork! (not sure, basicly 1 shot lynchproof)

Please Note: Roles may be used more than once. People may have multiple roles.

note: Still adding maybe roles, as we get the descriptions done :-)

The RI PM:
Alignment: Team Vimes
Role: RI
Discworld Character: ______________

You're a loyal member of the City Watch, and when Commander Vimes tells you to jump, you ask how high. Well, Commander Vimes has told you to root out the bad guys, so that's what you're going to do! You know what do to when you find a corpse, oh yes you do! You [s]strip it of its valuables and make a run for it[/s] turn out its pockets, take a few iconographs, examine the scene of the crime, and look for clues. Unfortunately for you, hints such as bloody knives, a contract for assassination signed by Lord Downey or Chrysoprase, and ominous black clothing escape your notice. Maybe you're just a little bit thick, but let's hope not. You're going to need your wits about you to make it out of this Opera House alive!
All players were given the name of a watchman as a character behind the alt. FMs and roled innocents with names (ie, Angua, Moist von Lipwig, Carrot, and Igor) were provided alternative watchmen names to claim as if needed.

Direct all questions to House Targ [s]later, after Pebs wakes up because Shabba's a lazy bum[/s], and I will get back to you as soon as I have an answer to provide.

DO NOT POST IN THIS THREAD UNTIL WE SAY YOU CAN.

Some people say that there is a Giant Turtle floating out there in space. It swims along peacefully with not a care in the universe. On it's shell rests four giant elephants, who in turn support a flat, round world called the disc world upon their backs.

Those people are wrong. Yes, there is a Giant Turtle floating out in space with four elephants on its back supporting the Discworld on their backs, but Great A'Tuin has plenty to worry about. Foremost amongst those worries is a man named Havelock Vetinari, upon whose life the disc itself now rests. You see, in his possession is another man, named Leonard of Quirm, an inventor right up there amoung the Legends, such as Didactylos of Ephebe and Plessiez of Mathématicá. The problem is, in the wrong hands, Leonard of Quirm is likely to invent the end of the world.

Unfortunately for Great A'Tuin, Lord Vetinari currently lies bleeding on the floor of the Opera House. To find out why, we'll have to take a brief step back...

-------------------------------------------------------------------

A Watchmen's Ball! It was a great idea, the sort of idea only Nobbs and Colon could come up with! They could raise money for the pension fund, maybe buy a few new tea mugs. It's amazing how many people are interested in attending such events, especially when a clamp hovers near their coach wheels!
Sir Samuel Vimes, Commander of the City Watch (and Duke of Ankh) wondered what could possibly go wrong. Yesterday you could have asked him and he would have provided an extended list, but he'd been very thorough with his preparations. No-one would be here unless they were supposed to be. Of course, if Lord Vetinari decided to turn up, things might be different what with all the recent trouble--but he didn't need to worry about that.

After all, what could Vetinari want at a Watchman's ball? At a masquerade*, no less, where every face would be hidden behind a mask. Sounded like a place Havelock would positively detest! Who'd expect Ankh-Morpork's very own Patrician to show up at a watchmen's fund-raiser? That'd be like Vetinari ordering cookies from the Guild of Scouty Girls! Still, if he had been anyone else, Vimes would have thought the Patrician had finally gone mad. Three days ago, he'd sent that tiger to Lord Downey, resparking a feud from their schooldays, and then just yesterday he'd sent a polite letter informing Chrysoprase that his Breccia would be facing investigation from the guild of clerks. The death threats were heard a hundred miles away. Still, this was Vetinari, so there must be some hidden agenda lurking under the water...

But that wasn't any of Vimes' concerns. He just had to make sure that nothing unexpected happened at the Watchmen's Ball. And he had.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

So, back to the present, Lord Vetinari lies in a pool of sticky red liquid on the stage of the Ankh-Morpork opera house. And the shooter? Was it Lord Snapcase? The werewolf? It might even have been one of the over sized squirrels? You were the only [s]men[/s] [s]humans[/s] [s]people[/s] sentient beings around at the time, and we've already had reports of both Inhumers and the Breccia amongst the party-goers. Surely with your training as a proper watchmen, you'll be able to root out all the killing killers that kill amongst you?

*In high society, Masquerade might mean "ballroom dress, but with a small mask to hide one's identity. The watch's approach, however, can be best summed up by a picture of Detrius in a pair of wings, a blonde wig and a bag of teeth. No-one dared ask where he them teeth from.

Greedo? Never heard of a Greedo on the discworld. There is a Greebo--great bloody ugly thing that lives with Nanny Ogg. You, sir, are clearly an imposter. I'd vote for you, but I'm not entirely certain what your name is. :P

Carrots, I'll grant you, are less than exciting, but spelling is tricky beast and bears watching. It trips me up every time I encounter it.
