NYC meetup

Recommended Posts

Ah, damn.... my flight from India is arriving on the 3rd, so the 2nd is out for me. Even the 3rd would be difficult, what with major jet lag and having to go to work the next day. I would've loved to do it, though.

(Thanks for the heads up, Soph. Sorry we'll be missing you.)

I'd definitely be up for mid-August meet, though.

I'm hoping to be able to make it (depends on how I'm feeling - 2 closings this week - will be burning the candle at both ends all week). A couple of suggestions on locale:

Although I generally hate the Meatpacking on general principles, The Park is a huge space that can usually accomodate lots of people (and you can often get space outdoors). It's fairly subway friendly as well. It's got a bit too much attitude ofr what it is, but sapce wise, you cna't do much better.

In the Union Sq. area, there is always Cafe Deville (pretty decent wine list) and Park Bar (ok, so it's a theme).

It would be so great if you could make it. I would love to meet you too

OK, seems we have a day (Saturday 2nd August). And a birthday to celebrate (Mr X).

East Village was the suggested location. Various venues have been mentioned (I'm not sure if all are in East Village ) - these are all easily reachable by subway, I gather:

Blind Tiger - last year's venue - quirky, nice atmosphere, good beer, but short on space, and range of food/drinks wasn't as much as could be desired.

O'Brien's - CH recommends. I looked at the website and it looks a bit commercialised with smaller range of drinks than the above, but larger. No good if has a band that night.

St Mark's ale house - TC recommends - but can be loud and crowded

Beer Table - Yags mentioned - tiny and not much info

The Park - Zabzy recommends. Looks a bit up-market but definitely spacious. Does restaurant type food and drinks.

Cafe Deville - Zabzy recommends - decent wine list - no other info

Park Bar - Zabzy recommends - no info
Does Mr X have any views/preferences?

Can we decide on a meeting place and rough start-time?

(My own preference is to go somewhere which has plenty of space, tables, isn't too loud, and does food, and a range of drinks (soft drinks, beer, wine, cocktails - and real ale if that's what Mr X likes :) However another option would be to eat first and then the food thing wouldn't be an extra constraint - but it's harder getting somewhere to sit if arriving later.)

A few more I just thought of (all ACTUALLY in the East Village....):

1. Common Ground (never eaten there)
2. Niagra (not sure they have food, but can be fun)
3. Phebes (we hung out there a fair bit in law school)
4. B Bar (a bit upmarket, but a great outdoor garden and decent-ish food)
5. Telephone (pubby dive. Food is ok as bar food goes, usually pretty empty)

That looks nice. It's got books

Haven't had time to check out any of the others yet - have to pack tonight and get to London tomorrow. But hoping we'll get some votes or a decision in before I get to New York ;)

I asked my friend who works on St. Marks for a good pub for a group and this is what she recommended.

As for meet up time I can be there at 8 pm at the earliest I think.

As far as the telephone bar:

I do believe I walked into this place and walked back out because it was a bit crowded (on a Wednesday night), and smelled funny. I'm willing to give it another shot though! (I ended up going to the place right next door that night.)

Yes. Here they are:

First, lets avoid the Meatpacking district.

Second, I am always a fan of Blind Tiger. True, the food options there are a little limited, but people could always eat first and show up for drinks and what not there later, like 7:30 or 8.

Thirdly, this place looks cool. I think it would work well if both drinking and dinner were to be at the same place, and the panini seem like a good range of offerings that would accommodate staggered arrival/eating times.

I was also going to suggest Hop Devil Grill, which is on St. Mark's Place between 1st Ave and Ave A. Unfortunately, their website is down at the moment.
KA-RA-O-KE!
Are you coming to town this weekend or are you just drumming up support for WorldCon Karaoke all over the place?

Maybe.

There could also be Beer Table this weekend.

I really wish someone would make a firm decision on where we are meeting up, even if it is a place we don't intend to stay at the entire evening due to being too busy, too loud, no food, no karaoke, whatever. It is unlikely we will find one place which meets all these requirements.

We just need a time and a place where we can start from.

To start us off I suggest a good restaurant where we can eat in a nice quiet atmosphere, say around 6 pm. This will probably be too early for most people but for me and probably Soph and Dunny as well this would be a good place to first meet up, say hello and get to know each other while enjoying some good food (which I will definitely need!). Others can then join us as the evening goes on.

Then we can move on to a proper drinking establishment with a more vibrant atmosphere, around 8 pm. Perhaps someplace with karaoke or maybe we should save that till later on - depending upon how much courage fuel people need before stepping up to the mic.

Is this an acceptable idea to everyone?

I agree with what MG said.

What about we three (and anyone else who wants to eat first) meet at 6pm at Common Ground*, maybe stay there until 8pm using it as a meeting point and then if people want a change of scene we can move on after that to the Blind Tiger or whatever?

* unless there are any objections. Can one of you locals ring them and check they're not booked out for a private party or something that night?
