I guess they mean Brittain or Great Brittain with the UK?

Aren't Canada and Austrailia part of the UK as well?

Brittain would be the right spot, since it seems obvious Mr. Martin had Britania on his mind when he created Westros. As fot CGI England has the foundations of it's wal already standing, easier to paste it over the original and make it look realistic.

same goes for the castles and fortresses.

No, Canada and Australia is not part of the united Kingdom(UK).
It includes England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Perhaps you mean the commonwealth, which also include Australia and Canada, among others.

Ah my bad. Though we usualy refer to it as Great Britain instead of the U.K. thanks for explaining anyway.

That's a recent update because up until a few weeks ago it was still showing New Zealand for location.

I would have thought there will be multiple locations throughout the UK and Ireland, so perhaps it will be studio work in Ireland.

I actually submitted that change. It wouldn't let me put the United Kingdom, so I picked Ireland since it seems more likely they will shoot there than in GB to me.

I'd actually be disappointed. I'd rather see continental Europe. There's so many stunning places in Italy, France, Spain, Germany, Poland, Austria, Czech Republic etc. etc. The settings in the book are all culturally distinct. It'd be disappointing to see all these places realized by similar UK/Irish castle designs.

Well, as they already said, it's almost certainly the U.K. I suppose nothing prevents them from sending some units out to various castles and landscapes elsewhere in Europe for exterior shots, but I really think that their first concern is going to be getting things in budget.

Since they're shooting in the UK then being from Newcastle, i would suggest Northumberland as it has great countryside, alot of castles and we even have a massive wall (Hadrian's Wall) that was built to keep out undesirables on the other side! Also for the Starks and Winterfell we have plenty of cold weather and its in the far north of England, perfect!

Wow, that is an incredible picture. Seen that and Old Town popped into my head.

You wouldn't happen to have a high resolution version of that in 1680x1024 so I can set that as my desktop, by chance?

My family owns an Country Estate (1000 acres) near Dublin (for anyone Irish, its Powerscourt Estate) It is a popular location for the shooting of films including King Arthur, the Count of Monte Cristo, Henry VIII, and most importantly the BBC show THE TUDORS. so hopefully it could be a reality.

Um, my goodness, the place is beautiful. I remember it from Count of Monte Cristo. The house itself probably isn't right for anything in the series, but with 1000 acres, I'm sure other scenes could easily be shot there. (And I used to think my friend's little villa in Tuscany was something...)

Oh God, if it's in Ireland, I will be a very very happy man. Lots of well-preserved castles near my house, that have been used in TV programmes and films before.

And if they need extras for those scenes, I am available.

:) :) :) :)

And to Brude: Your family owns Powerscourt Estate? Hell, that must be really cool! One of the most beautiful parts of Ireland.

No. I was responding to Growing Stronger's post...my family owns an average sized split-level house on a quarter acre plot in suburban Baltimore. I have a rich friend with a little villa and olive oil plantation in Tuscany, but frankly Powerscourt Estate makes even that look like a hovel.

Oops. I meant to direct my question towards Growing Stronger. Sorry about that.

Still, if they shot any scenes near me, it'd be great. Anywhere in Ireland would be great.
 Good one.
I live in New York City....but my family farm in the southwest of Ireland has a massive medieval castle. It is about 100 feet high...not in great shape....solid stone....great for exterior shot of Moat Cailin...I will try and post pics...can anyone tell me how to do that?

As much as I admire everyone's castles, the ones that appear in aSoIaF are practically characters themselves. They're very specifically described. It's better to do a CGI shot then cut to an interior next to a stone wall, throne room, dungeon, etc.

While I'm at it, I'll continue my lobbying effort in this thread: (pasted from Oh, Joy! thread)

Well, we don't have many castles, but lots of riverlands and forests! film it in Michigan! and Winter IS coming, y'know.

I'll even throw myself in as a hapless peasant woman trudging toward King's Landing. :D

Under Michigan's program, producers get 40 cents back for every $1 they spend on filming (double the existing rebate) and qualify for an additional 2% spending rebate if the film is shot in designated "core communities," including Detroit and Flint.

We even have lots of big empty buildings that could be used for interior shots. Hell, that's ALL we've got lately.
