There are tons of better renaissance/medieval folk bands than Blackmore's Night, and having an American accent singing those would sound goofy as hell.

I've always liked soundtracks that gave certain riffs to certain themes...like whenever the hobbits in LOTR thought about home, there was that one theme....whenever you saw forces of evil building, you had a second theme, and Gandalf doing something magic had yet a third theme.

So, in that vein, Ned reminiscing about Lyanna needs a theme. Winterfell needs a theme (which can be the same as Stark principles theme). Lannister pride needs a theme. Tully duty needs a theme. Eyrie insanity needs a theme. King's court scheming needs a theme. Targaryens need a theme, while khal drogo needs a style that Dany's theme adopts, but Visceris, Rhegar, Aeris, etc. does not. We should hear echoes of it when Aemon reveals his background and afterwords.

Gimme a composer that can do that, and I'll back him. Most good composers can.

As far as Viking metal goes, clearly that theme and style belongs to the Greyjoys, with Theon's theme starts with stark style, but goes to greyjoy style in the second season.

Me too.

Think it might be cool to have a Lyanna theme be a sweeter and sadder version of a general Stark theme - different instrumentation, maybe some slight key changes, etc.

Yes, yes! As much medieval/folk as possible, with underlying symphonic score here and there!

Well it would seem I am in the extreme minority here, but if it is done right I love more modern music in period pieces. An example of it being done poorly would be A Knight's Tale (it made my ears bleed), but I think it can be done by someone with talent. Whenever I think about the kind of eerie new music I want to hear to enhance the scenes of ASoIaF I think of Six Feet Under's main theme or American Beauty-- which I believe were Thomas Newman.

That's just my 2 cents though.

The more I think about it, the more I conclude that McCreary would be the perfect choice for making the soundtrack. I mean, heck, listen to this:

http://goear.com/listen.php?v=79ffbb1

This track is represents exactly the type of music that I picture this series with (or at least its few battles).

Okay, don't laugh at me, because I know this sounds weird. The OST for the movie The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford has long been my personal ASOIAF soundtrack. Here are some samples:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R2GSLg5nqBc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_UtCI5O0Re0
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6KFvYCrB4E

It's composed by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis. I'm not saying they should be enlisted to compose the show because that would be kind of weird (or WOULD it?!) but I really like the style here. It's very dark and subtle, and not too epic-sounding for TV.

That is, of course, if you want to go the anachronistic route. I think the show could and should have both authentic period music and orchestral music. I'm also not averse to Jakob Lightbringer's suggestion that some modern elements could be injected here and there.

And yes yes yes to individual characters/places having motifs!

I hope so... I suggested him a while back.

Hey, that is Fantastic! I'm sold. Nick Cave & Warren Ellis, Bear McCreay (Still my top pick), Ludovico Einaudi, Jeff Beals, and Thomas Newman.... Any of these guys could pull it off with amazing results.

Great thread BTW!

If the makers want to try and do something completely different and contemporary, there are a ton of songs off Black Mountains "in the future" album that would fit the show perfectly from track 2 onwards. I may be biased as this was one of the albums i was listening to when I started reading the series at the beginning of the year, whenever I think of any of Eddards chapters I think of "Angels" by them (NOT ROBBIE WILLIAMS). It's rock but has some keyboard that sounds very gothic in places.
M83 could also provide the show with some cool stuff too - some of their albums are like scores anyhow.

But if they dont want to take a contemporary risk - I guess anyone who can turn out greensleeves style music will suffice.

Stormy High always makes me think of when Jon's climbing in the mountains, scouting the Wildlings. I think they'd be a bit too contemporary for the series, though, judging from their musical prowess, they could probably put out a great instrumental album themed around the series.

Bear McCreary! That man is a genius. I'm absolutely in love with the BSG music, and would die of happiness if he did the score for GoT.

But I love Jeff Beal's work as well, so I wouldn't mind if they picked him instead.

Yeah, pretty much every track off their new album conjures up scenes from the first few books. The intro track from "Wucan" would make a great instumental track and reminded me of tyrions adventures in the eyrie and Jaimes scenes. Weird how reading an listening to music can reinforce each other, especially when i had different albums on and they failed to stick. If they could be convinced to do some instrumentals it would be cool, maybe one of the band is a fan.
Otherwise something in that style would work well as the musical epic and fantasy can get cliched.
I would like for HBO to take a very sparse approach when it comes to music. I would also like to see them use period-appropriate music. I think using modern music (particularly something as identifiable as [insert type here] metal) would only serve to ruin the suspension of disbelief and set the tone of the series as light entertainment, something very few of us want, I suspect. Kind of like giving the characters light sabers. Some people would probably think it was sweet, but for most it would seem quite anachronistic.

<snip a post with awesome samples>
 Jan Gabarek & The Hilliard Exemple. Thank you for pointing this out to me.

I would really love to see more movies or TV shows that use period music, maybe a little adapted like the example with the saxophone. I would also like that they use music sparsely, not every scene needs music.
Lannister pride needs a theme...
Rains of Castermere?

And who are you, the proud lord said,
That I must bow so low?
Only a cat of a different coat,
That's all the truth I know.
In a coat of gold or a coat of red,
A lion still has claws,
And mine are long and sharp, my lord,
As long and sharp as yours.
And so he spoke, and so he spoke,
That lord of Castamere,
But now the rains weep o'er his hall,
With no one there to hear.
Yes now the rains weep o'er his hall,
And not a soul to hear.

Now we just need to set it to music...

Hi,

I would vote for Celtic or Folk Rock as basic music theme througout the series.
It's powerful rock music mixed with medival folk.

Something like Lyriel from Germany, we have some pretty good Folk Rock bands up here

Here are a few examples:
Lyriel - Memoria - http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=eJXswSvkoeU
Lyriel - Crown Of The Twillight (acc.) http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=Z2PUWNtpfmI
Lyriel - Lind e-huil http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=28lBcZ3hyJ8 (a song in Sindarin )
Lyriel - My favorite Dream http://de.youtube.com/watch?v=IX7IpJx-lok

I always felt like Michael Giacchino would be a good match for ASOIAF, at least in some spots.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZRWnhsEZL0

I always imagined something like that playing when
SPOILER: Last scene of season 1
Dany hatches her dragons.
Especially the last 20 seconds or so.

Bear McCreary would also be great, as others have mentioned.
