Belwas Posted December 2, 2008 Share Posted December 2, 2008 Hello. Long time listener blah blah... Heres my take on this. Of the four storylines, the three all have the same origin, Winterfell. This allows the pilot episode to set up all those story arcs, and connect them, and then have them branch out from there. The East/Dany storyline is a problem though. Even in the books it is very distinct, and is only connected through references in conversation and history. My suggestion is a bit different... I think Dany and the eastern storyline should be left completely out of the pilot, and of the first season. Maybe even the first three or four seasons. Its simply not directly relevant for the neither the other storylines, nor the characters than one would expect to be the main characters the first seasons. I know its hard to swallow for us fans, but when you think about the level of knowledge of Westeros'i history and relations you can portray in a TV show, it makes sense. Of course, Dany has to be included at some point. My idea is that when this becomes necessary, you can do either a double episode, mini-series or perhaps even a TV movie that tells Dany's story. You can do this leading into the season where you need to connect the storylines, most likely season four or five. What do you think? Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Lady Blackfish Posted December 2, 2008 Share Posted December 2, 2008 I think that if Dany's story isn't introduced early on then by the time she lands nobody will be invested in her side, everyone will perceive her as the Westerosi might, merely as an outsider, and want her to lose after we've bonded so long with the other characters ie Starks (remember she hates all the Usurper's dogs), and I'm not sure that is what GRRM has in mind. Yes it could be done in a separate miniseries or movie, but I do think you lose something by not seeing it progress in real time alongside the other events. Ser Greguh Posted December 2, 2008 Share Posted December 2, 2008 When it comes to connecting the storylines together, the issues faced by the series will be similar to those faced by the books: it's difficult to do in that it is very slow going, and if the viewer doesn't like, for example, Dany or Dany's storyline, they may find their eyes glazing over when those scenes are going on (just as some readers have admitted to skimming Dany chapters, or Jon chapters, or whatever). The HBO TV precedent for this is Carnivàle, which had its own two separate storylines that never got to have any meaningful interaction because they canned the show after 2 seasons. That's always a risk. There is certainly some interaction. For example... SPOILER: AGOT ...when Robert orders Dany's assassination from KL and a few weeks later the assassin shows up in Vaes Dothrak, plus the whole tension in recognizing that Ser Jorah is a traitor to Dany. One advantage of the series is that it can play up those connections in a way that Martin's rigid adherence to first-person-subjective POV doesn't allow for. A TV show can, for example, cut straight from the meeting in KL where Varys discusses how Jorah Mormont has been feeding him information, to Ser Jorah staring at Dany with a conflicted expression. These sorts of transitions work much better on screen than they do on the page. More worrisome than even the Dany storyline, to me, from a storytelling perspective, is the Jon story. Sure, it starts in the same place as the other three main plots, but once Tyrion leaves the Wall there's pretty much zero interaction with the rest of what's going on. More than that, the Jon storyline doesn't have nearly the climactic ending of the Dany storyline. Although I think that... SPOILER: AGOT ...Jon burning down the Lord Commander's tower... ...would make a fine ending to the 2nd-to-last episode, his last chapter ends with a scene that a) I didn't personally care for very much, and b) I don't think would survive the transition to film very well. In fact, one alteration that I could live with would be... SPOILER: AGOT ...if Jon's final scene were to be the burning down of the tower, and saving the whole Jon-learns-of-his-father's-death-and-tries-to-run-away thing for S2E1. That would allow for all that much more asskickery in the season finale. I don't think that coordinating the Winterfell storyline and the King's Landing storyline will be a problem at all. Halfhand Posted December 2, 2008 Share Posted December 2, 2008 I am in agreement with Ser Greguh on this one. You have to interweave Dany's storyline with the action taking place in Westeros. There are a number of ways you could do this, I'm sure Benioff & Weiss will come up with some creative ideas. Making her story completely separate is not going to work. It will be jarring to the viewer when she shows up, seemingly out of no where. They need to treat her almost like the Others, little glimpses or references here and there, so that the audience knows she is a major character and will be a force that will come into play later on. Either there's going to be fewer than 12 episodes, or some of the action scenes are going to last a while. That's 95ish pages of book that they've fit into 60 minutes. Not so sure about that she has to be the pilot, I was thinking in the next episode. For a couple reasons. First, there will less people to cast for the pilot and more time to focus on the prologue and Winterfell. Second, it could be jarring and confusing to the uninitiate. If it were true the prologue to Bran's fall couldn't be done in an hour, and even if it were 2 hours it's still not needed. I'm also skeptical and call :bs: .
