The mystery has been solved: He's hiking the Appalachian Trail.

While I understand the appeal of the AT, it seems like something that, I dunno, you might tell someone about? Maybe? I mean, the trail doesn't exactly sneak up on you.

Is this a publicity stunt, or is he just careless? Does his mistress live on the AT? If so, 90% chance its a man, 10% chance its a bear.

I'm just going to assume "hiking the Appalachian trail" is code for seeing his illegal immigrant male lover for a few days. When you take off for a few days and not tell anyone I'm going to fill in the blanks myself. This goes double for not telling his wife.

Guessing this is a Ser Scott question. If an emergency occurred when Gov. Sanford was missing did the Lt. Governor have the authority to act? The newspapers and a reporter for the paper that broke the store seem unclear if he can be acting Governor in an emergency during Sanford's absence. Probably will not help his chances of getting the Republican nomination.

Probably will not help his chances of getting the Republican nomination.

Are you kidding? Republicans will eat that up. Rugged, verile governor of a conservative state, after telling Commie Obama to stick his stimulus where the sun don't shine, ditches his own security detail in his huge American SUV. He goes to the mountains and hikes for days, probably wrestles a bear. Maybe he even breaks up a few meth labs. Then he comes home and gets back to the work of the people.

When he's president, he'll one-up Dubya by actually landing his jet fighter on an aircraft carrier himself.

That will work great in the Deep South primaries, but Hayley Barbour (MS Gov), Palin, and others will be running on a similar platform. What works for the Southern primary voters, probably won't work for primary voters in the Midwest, and the coasts. His competition can easily point to this as irresponsible, and he should have informed the Lt. Governor of his decision. I've heard rumors that many in the Republican hierarchy think he's really odd and not in a good way.

I'd just like to point at that along the Appalachian Trail there are probably plenty of rocky, secluded places where one could establish a hidden redoubt where one with the a thirst for justice may headquarter himself and his advanced technological crime fighting gear. With a secret bastion thus established, this "hypothetical" person could then plan and implement campaigns to thwart the dark designs of the wicked.

Guessing this is a Ser Scott question.

I'd also like to ask Ser Scott a couple of questions: has Gov. Sanford ever struck you as a man who would harbor a spandex fetish? Has he ever, to your knowledge worn his underwear outside of his clothes?

Holes keep appearing in this Appalachian Trail story.

A federal agent spotted Sanford boarding a plane in Atlanta. A missing SC state government SUV was tracked to the Atlanta airport. And Sanford's cell phone was tracked to Atlanta.

So now Sanford's back, and admits he was in Argentina. In Buenos Aires, "driving the coast". Which is like saying, "I went to New York City to check out the coast." And didn't bother to inform the US Embassy in Argentina, the state government, or even, apparently, his wife.

To help keep tabs on the ever-changing line of bullshit from Sanford and his team, Talking Points Memo has a timeline:

So, you know what's sort of on the way to the Appalacian Trail? Argentina.

I have to admit, this is turning into one of the most off the wall political stories in a while. How did this guy get elected? Does he just like making trouble? Governors can take vacations, it's not something they need to do in secret. Not like he's big enough news that reporters will be following him to the Southern Hemisphere just to see what he's up to.

Could he be telling the truth? Is it even possible (that he just up and decided to go to South America, and it is totally innocent)?

I suppose, but it seems odd that he wouldn't tell his wife he planned to be away for five or six days. I wonder if he was seeking a medical treatment that's not available in the States, for some as-yet undisclosed illness.

It is possible, but the absence of major coastal roads in Argentina is a pretty serious piece of counter-evidence. Apparently it is almost impossible to just 'drive around' along the coast of Argentina. Especially if you are fond of using roads.

He's calling a news conference at 2 pm:

Sanford to Explain Trip

I wonder if he had a little breakdown. Usually you at least tell your wife where you're going. I can't believe she didn't worry about him at all. Either that, or she knew where he was all along.

Political scientist Scott Huffmon said the problem was not that Mr. Sanford took a vacation, but that he did not tell his security detail, the lieutenant governor or even close confidants. "The idea that for the day-to-day operations of our state, nobody knew who was in charge -- that bothers people," said Mr. Huffmon, who teaches at Winthrop University. "That makes them think he doesn't take our job as governor very seriously."

That doesn't look good on his resume--not if he wants to run for president.

ETA: Now there's talk of impeaching him:

Sanford returns home to impeachment rumblings

Ah, too bad I was not here for the fun on Ensign. GOP, here, have some more eggs on your self-righteous face.

Muwahhahahahah.

Too bad the GOP voters are not very likely to take that into consideration as they flock to the next politician carrying the MORALITY banner.

Sanford is giving a press conference right now. He just (30 seconds ago) admitted he was having an affair with a woman in Argentina. I guess he's big on the internet dating.

He's resigning as President of the Republician Governor's association.

To answer earlier questions Sanford has always been odd. But this sitation is weird even for him.
