I have been neglecting my upper body badly over the last few months and am now doing something to fix the situation.

When you do Smolov, you practically have to neglect the upper body unless you're on the juice :)

Are you done with Smolov now? How much did your squat improve?

As of me I started doing some running with a weight vest and now I've gained a few pounds... Yesterday I did some front squats with 140 kg, the day before some handstand and front lever exercises and last Saturday I practiced sprinting technique. Can't really decide what I want to do now that I can't do weightlifting anymore...

Yeh I have finished the base mesocycle. I'm not doing the intense phase because of the mentioned upper body neglect lol. I'm not quite sure where my squat was before hand because I had lost some weight/strength but It was probably around 195. So I gained around 15kg just off the base mesocycle.

Why have you stopped weihglifting? The tendonitis?

SPOILER: dudes, your help pls

So doing deadlifts, I find the bar usually winds up just at dick level. Rather, brushing up against dick level. I use a normal stance, but pretty wide grip, so is this a normal area to hit, or am I doing something wrong? Has this happened to anyone else, and what, if anything, did you do about it? Should I consider varying stance/ grip, or maybe wearing jockeys under the swim trunks I normally do? Aside from this, everything else in my deadlifts feels good; as though I can start doing real weight again. Your thoughts appreciated.

To repeat what others have already said, either your grips very very wide or you have very short arms. If you use a narrower grip then the bar will be lower at the top position.

So, I'll probably be having my second amateur MMA fight in November. I've decided to start preparing early by changing up my routine. I'll miss doing a lot of the weights but right now they're not a priority. Since this will be a knockout tournament I may be fighting more than once so I need to start focusing on my gas tank. This isn't my "fight" training as such, just my long-term prep. My real fight training will start mid-October.

Mon: Rest

Tue: AM - Circuit training

PM - Muay Thai then BJJ

Wed: AM - Circuit training

PM - MMA then BJJ

Thu: AM - Circuit training

PM - MMA then BJJ

Fri: Rest

Sat: AM - Judo

PM - BJJ

Sun: AM - Circuit training

PM - Open mat (BJJ/MMA)

My circuits are going to be crossfit style cricuits, mixing up weights with high intensity anaerobic cardio training. I hope to steadily improve my reserves of stamina so I can get the most of my real fight training once it starts.

What exercises make it flare up the most?

The classic lifts since you have to use a fingerlock on them. I've done some power cleans and snatches with straps but the straps seem to put their own strain on the tendon so it's not much better. Also, you can't compete with straps so it's not too motivating.

Switch to powerlifting? Or bodybuilding :P

Nope. No you didn't.

You gained 10lbs based upon what you were eating. :D

I meant nothing but running as in I only ran and didn't lift or anything, to prove that you can and do gain muscle through distance running as long as it is done at the right level. I didn't mean food wasn't a contributing factor, although tbh I wasn't thinking about food at all when I posted that.

I tried switching my weight lifting stuff first this morning and doing the cardio afterwards as per this thread--interesting. I've never done it that way before. Do you all do any kind of warm up at all before lifting weights or you just jump right into it?

It didn't seem to change how much or how long I was weight lifting but it sure made the cardio hard to get through! (just because it was more boring I think, not because it was harder. Usually I have the weightlifting to look forward to).

Ztem--do you have a long torso? (that sounds better than "short arms" and its sometimes a different thing).

Rock solid abs (and by extension, a strong center) are good for the libido. It is known.

or, alternately, a good libido/active sex life is good for getting rock solid abs. Its another known.

um, maybe? How does one know if their body proportions vary from the mean?

the afore mentioned problem is only slightly uncomfortable, but in deadlifts, I find it's important to remove any and all distractions prior to lifting. thanks for the tips, I'll try using a narrower grip and see how that goes. ;)

Just that--in relation to other people and finding an average. When comparing myself to other people about my height, my arms are about the same length but my hips are lower. so my torso is a little longer than average (making my arms and legs look a little shorter in relation to my own body if one is paying attention to such things). I just hate saying I have short arms though. so I say I have a long torso. but its really neither here nor there when one is worried about smashing one's... um... stuff... I suppose.

good luck with the new grip--hope it works.

I somewhat loath bodybuilding :)

I'd have a hard time to switch to powerlifting now. Would have to learn to squat with a different style again and I haven't done proper bench pressing for years. Also I don't want to buy the armor. However I'll keep my options open and if there are some raw competitions maybe I'll train a bit and attend.

Yeh thats the thing. Most competitions nowadays are equipped lifting. A raw comp would be good. Or strongman? Lots of iron sports out there.

just a note to say everyone go out and kick some ass today!

do an extra set!

get a spotter and increase your personal bests!

run a little bit farther!

go faster! If you're having a cramp, power through it!

If you're thinking of skipping the gym, go have an extra hard workout instead!

don't get lost in your own head, just make a plan and execute it!

that is all. :)
