And Pax, I don't rate that article. Television viewing maketh not popularity figures. What are attendance figures? and what about memberships? I'll fight this till death!!!

Hope everyone has had a safe trip home. Also hope the rat race isn't getting people down.

x

Thanks for the moral support Luce, but now that I have conceded defeat to Ski, it's unlikely that he'll let up. And yes, the rat race is getting me down. I really went through the motions when I taught a 9:00 am class on Monday morning - just wanted to be back in Melbourne (and my students probably wanted it as well considering how poor my teaching was...).

Nah, this was just some guy milling around outside in confusion as the panel he was after had moved, and Pax exaggerates, he muttered it and stormed off.

OK, I admit that "shouting" was probably a bit hyperbolic, but it was a memorable moment. Right up there with clown porn and Ski's failed attempt to impersonate Christopher Paolini.

I am back in the UK, on a bus to Woking railway station. Been enjoying everyone's con reports so far, keep them coming.

Luce you only needed to pay if you were at the nightclub party on Saturday night, since you were only around for one afternoon no worries. In fact there were only a small handful of bros who got to meet you, shame you could not have been around more.

I'd like to point put that is for morningsword rather than Paxter, though he can have a manhug.

Paxter are you aware that you left a sock in your hotel room? I don't think you will want it back though after Ski "used' it to help him get over his loneliness after you were gone :uhoh:

Thanks for all the reports, everyone! It's not the same as being there, but it's really nice to hear what went on.

Ser Cam--Don't worry about the fanboy reaction. We've all done it! I made a complete fool of myself when I first met George. I got all flustered at one point because I thought he had remembered my name...until my husband pointed out that I was wearing my con badge which had my name on it, lol. *face palm*

Well, I did have a habit of losing stuff on this trip, so I probably shouldn't be surprised. As to any subsequent "use" of the sock, I can only imagine that Ski suddenly realised how dusty the hotel skirting-boards and decided to go on a cleaning frenzy. Nothing suss :smoking:.

ETA: Random question - does anyone know whether Chrystal ended up joining the board?

Haha thanks...but it really didn't improve over multiple days, it was shameful!

Regina I love your signature/ msg thing! My new niece does the Sheldon half-smile so perfectly. That is truly the best thing about her (at least until she stops sleeping all day and starts breaking stuff)

Okay now I'm gonna try to inser quotes and stuff:

Okay, I'm going to be bemoaning my lack of socialising until the next WorldCon comes around.

Did I meet Ski? I bet I could take him/ her down.

I can't believe your students turn up to classes at 9am Mondays. Are they all the mature age ones!?!

Thanks for putting photos up! It'll be useful for me to remember whom I met and whatnot.

G'day guys!

Just had my first full night of sleep after having to sit through lectures all yesterday fresh off the plane from aussiecon (i even had to drag my suitcase around uni because there wasn't enough time to go home first). But now i'm reinvigorated enough for my first post-con post.

Dean and i would like to say a huge thankyou to stubby and laoise for making us feel part of the group from the get-go. We had an awesome time and it was largely due to been able to call stubby whenever and he'd tell us exactly whats going on.

Meeting all of you guys was awesome! I've got a couple of photos and videos that i'll link when i get enough time in the next couple of days, in particular the raising of a knight of the spicy fungus and ser ski the last.

I'd have to agree with stubby on the panel of the con as the Zombies vs Vampires smackdown. Although George gave a very convincing case for Vampires and to be honest the Zombie panel were for the most part monosyllabic in their defence, i still would side with zombies over vampires any day.

Moment of the con for me was probably Stubby telling me on the first day, so casually, "the plan for tonight is that we'll go have dinner and a few drinks with George". That wrinkled my brain!

So thanks to everyone who organised stuff to make this a very memorable trip for me. If all goes well i'll be in Reno next year keen for some more fun and adventures.

Nah, you didn't meet Ski - he was still hungover after drinking 90% of the vodka that the London bid party had going on Friday night. But I'd definitely appreciate some additional intellectual firepower next time I try and convince him that AFL is Australia's national winter sport. Game on.

And no, surprisingly, my 9:00 am Monday tute is 100% second-year undergrads - no mature-aged students in there at all.

@Jewbear: good to hear you made it home OK. All you need to do now is change your username to reflect the weird-ass pronunciation that GRRM gave it on Sunday night...

Lots to read clearly. Crappy internet connection here, so i'll just say that it was great to meet everyone. BwB Australia is an awesome bunch. Socks and all. And it was a very good con and Stubby and Laoise did a wonderful job of ensuring it would happen right. Come what may.

More eventually.

Hope Uluru/Ayers Rock is living up to your expectations Pod. Make sure you post some pics when you get the chance.

@Stubby: loving the new title mate.

Unanimously amongst the crew, simanhada is (to shamelessly quote Ghost of Nymeria in an earlier con report) the “motherfuckin’ n00b of the year”. Chris, you too are a good bloke.

I've been following this thread since the con finished but this is the first I've had the time to sit down and actually write something. I'm honoured to be the “motherfuckin’ n00b of the year”! It was awesome meeting everyone from the boards, both old and new guard and I had one of the funnest times I've had for a good while. Prior to my first post here just before the con my main exposure to the board was indirect by seeing/reading Ran's posts on Not a Blog and hes always come across as a good guy, so based on that and the few posts I read in this thread I wasn't at all worried about meeting some fellow fans. Also, half the experience of being at an event like this is helping out in one way or the other and meeting new people. I didn't get to volunteer directly for the Aussiecon due to work commitments so I was happy to be able to help out the BWB in whatever way I could. It elevated the whole con from just 'going' to the con to 'experiencing' the con.

On a more personal level, Stubby, Loaise and SMG were inspiring to watch in their good humour and generosity. They and all the brothers I met are truly a credit to this board. And damned interesting to talk to. Its great to be able to talk Asoiaf with others in person!

Just have to add as well that simanhada (Chris) is very much deserving of the "motherfuckin’ n00b of the year" title - especially after he treated Pod and I to some classic Melbournian driving (which is premised on one unifying principle: ignore the yellow light).

hahaha, Horza was recounting to me that that excursion was already infamous later in the night, and then I shared with him part of my philosophy on driving. I must say, we don't ignore the yellow light, its primarily there to let us know that if we don't put our foot on the gas we won't get through!

Some of my highlights of the con.

Dinner on the Thursday night during which;

I got to meet alot of the brothers.

Had Parris recount to us the letter sent to George pleading for him to intervene in the T. Goodkind bashing on the board. Hillarious!

Meeting GRRM for the first time and getting to chat briefly.

Attending the reading was magical.

Being part of what was probably the longest line for the book signings to get George to sign my books(directly behind me incidently was one who would later be known as Tamer of the Magic Nose Goblins)

The BWB party which was so full of awesome, including me winning one of the Raffle prizes, being The Blade Itself by Abercrombie which is now on my next to read list.

Questing and being knighted.

Non-BWB, the Hugo's were great. Shits all over watching the Oscars or crappy music awards. Geeks being awarded for being geeky = awesome.
