Who will be the Swearengen of this series? The Omar? The Tony Soprano? Pick a favorite character from other HBO shows and match him with a character from the series. Set your own criteria - whatever floats your boat.

Here are a couple of mine:

The Omar Little of A Game of Thrones (and beyond): The Hound. The most badass character in the series, but also shows his vulnerability, shows a scarred and terrible past that made him what he is, and also displays a level of decency while committing terrible acts. Like Omar, Clegane doesn't bullshit, and he sees his world for what it is. He isn't as honorable as Omar, but he is also a work in progress; Omar debuted, existed, and exited as a fully formed character (not that he didn't grow a bit, but in the end, did he really change or did the circumstances of his surroundings change?).

The Seth Bullock of AGOT: This one is easy. Ned is Bullock. Bullheaded stubborn about his honor and the honor of those around him. And also in need of an education in intrigue. Too bad Ned didn't have Al Swearengen to advise him.

Omar ain't nothing like the hound, yo. The hound be immoral and shit. Omar don't play those who don't play. The hound play everybody. That's why Omar is liked.

Sorry about that, I'm normally very aware of the fact that I'm not a character from The Wire. I don't know how popular the Hound will be. However, I think Tyrion will have a huge following, as far as being a scarred and moral person where it's stupid to be a scarred and moral person.

Jaime will be the Eric Northman of this. Everybody will be squeeing over Nikolaj. This trope will be renamed The Jaime Lannister because of him.

Eddard Stark --- Brom Garret (Deadwood)

Unwisely venturing into unfamiliar territory that steadfastly refuses to play by their civilized rules, these interlopers are quickly identified, toyed with, and dispatched by the real players, though their dispatching may carry unforeseen consequences. Both have wives that outlive them, take command of much of their power, and work to clean up the messes they left in their wake.

Eddard Stark --- Cedric Daniels (The Wire)

These men of quality inspire an almost religious loyalty in their subordinates, but despite their political ambitions are ill-suited to the backstabbing and double-dealing that comes with managing actual power. Each harbors a secret in their past that few know the full extent of. Their reigns of influence are brief and largely ineffectual.

Littlefinger --- Tommy Carcetti (The Wire)

Diminutive, physically unassuming, charismatic, and whip-smart, these politicians are master players of their environments, biding their time under the radar, staying quiet and useful until they boldly push their chips into the middle from out of nowhere. Both are masters at recognizing and taking advantage of the fact that they are consistently underestimated: the lesser players don't recognize them as threats until they've already jumped well into the lead. Both set their aim well above the natural order of things, hit, and have their sights set even higher, be it the governor's mansion or the Iron Throne itself.

The Hound --- Chris Partlow (The Wire)

These physically imposing enforcers don't care that the men they serve are sociopaths, only that you are nothing if you're not loyal. Abuse suffered as children drives much of what they are now, and when given a chance for revenge, real or symbolic, these normally steadfast subordinates can lose their cool.

Robert Baratheon --- Clarence Royce (The Wire)

These once-promising men of influence were widely loved and respected when they came to power, but unwise decisions, character flaws, and the poisonous influences of court gave rise to a reign of half-steps, missteps, and outright corruption that left their respective realms even worse than when they acquired power. Ambitious up-and-comers hope to dethrone these washed-up powerful men.

Tywin Lannister --- Marlo Stanfield (The Wire)

These men understand the nature of power, and derive theirs from equal parts generosity to their friends and cold, unflinching, remorseless violence to any that stand in their way. They know better than anyone that true power is derived from fear, which in turn comes from making sure everyone knows that they are the most cold-blooded motherfucker there is in the game. Neither are tolerant of japes and jibes, understanding that men won't fear what they laugh at. Their name is their name, always.

Cersei Lannister --- Atia of the Julii (Rome)

These women of quality understand their weapons well, knowing the full value of their sexuality as a currency of power. Willing to spread their legs for anyone where there is something to be gained, these women watch their eldest sons ascend to power only to largely ignore their advice.

Cersei Lannister --- Bill Rawls (The Wire)

These would-be leaders spend a great deal of time and energy bitching about how much better they would be than the current people in power, and are resentful of the circumstances beyond their control - be it whiteness or womanhood - that limit their authority. Once they do achieve a modicum of power they manage to cock things up quite thoroughly.

Cersei Lannister --- Yolanda Brice (The Wire)

These psychotic baby-mamas achieved the majority of their influence through the men that are believed to have fathered their children, and are utterly blind to the fact that their sons are horribly ill-suited to the lives they've chosen for them. Alternating between undeserved pampering and brutal tough love, they are the world's worst candidates for Mother of the Year. Their baby-daddies know much better than they do what sort of sons they've brought into the world.

Jaime Lannister --- Marc Antony (Rome)

These aggressive, charismatic warriors love nothing more than to fight, and are bored with the trappings of power once it is actually achieved. Their aggression on the battlefield serves them well, but also leaves them open to traps when confronted with more cunning opposition. Both suffer from the pitfalls of falling for manipulative women. They also serve as the devil-may-care man-candy studmuffins for their respective series, and are likely as not to be seen with their shirts off.

Bronn --- Slim Charles (The Wire)

These mercenaries are loyal as can be to the men that are paying them, and though they have no qualms about switching sides when a better offer comes around, they'll never stab you in the back. Their charm and charisma often mask their violent nature, and it can be easy to forget that either is capable of murdering children.

Gregor Clegane --- Bird (The Wire)

These hired guns are in it because they enjoy it, and know nothing else. Their willingness to do violence is useful to their masters, but their enthusiasm for the task often gets them in trouble.

While I wouldn't really compare any SOIAF character to Omar, easily the most likely to utter the words "It's all in the game" would be Littlefinger.

Both these characters come out of nowhere halfway through the series and ruthlessly take over their corner. Then they advance and take full advantage of the chaos their rivals are dealing with.

Cersei --- Atia (Rome)

Goes without saying. Smug snakes, with success dependant on shrewder family members

Tywin Lannister --- George Hearst (Deadwood)

Primary interest is the colour; using it as basis of power and exerting their will. Thin veneer of class on top of thoroughly unpleasant greed

Jon Snow --- Seth Bullock (Deadwood)

Both honourable characters who arrive in lawless situations, yet unexpectedly prosper, mostly through plot armour.

Cersei and Attia(Rome) are very similar (both obsessed with their son's aggrandizement, both having illicit relationships with the most powerful men around them, both wanting more power than they are allotted as women, etc), though I have to say that Attia is a much, much more sympathetic character.

You could argue that the Cersei and Sansa relationship mirrors the Schillinger & Beecher relationship in OZ, although it's far more drawn out and Sansa has yet to take revenge. Or have a bowel movement on Cersei face.
