ants
Hope everyone is enjoying Australia Day. Is anyone following Sam Kekovich's advice in the food department this year? Or has the ad made you cringe so much that you are ordering pizza instead? Loved the ad. Linky to con site.Linky to thread in BWB forum about it....Damnit, they finally have a Worldcon in Australia, in MELBOURNE, while I'm out of the bloody country.Darwin CBD Office bombed. We've had threats before, but fortunately no-one has ever carried them out. I hope everyone injured recovers.Yikes, first I'd heard of this.
Paxter
Just read a good article that summarises quite nicely the implications of recently revised estimates from Treasury that Australia's population will grow to 36m by 2050 (our current population stands at 21.5m). On the one hand, the population growth should help compensate for the ageing population and keep the dependency ratio under some sort of control. This is vital from an economic standpoint, as a high dependency ratio would cripple the government. But the Treasury's projections present two very serious challenges:1) Even with the influx of young immigrants, the dependency ratio will still be high enough to cause problems. We could be facing successive deficits over a long period.2) The environment. Do we have the resources to cope with a population spike of this magnitude without a drop in living standards? At this stage, the answer is "probably not". This is going to be a tough balancing act for future governments: weighing the economic costs of a high dependency ratio against the environmental costs (and accompanying economic costs) of population growth. Paxter
yeah well the update is that the minimum overnight was 87 Fwe actually had some rain here today so the humidity is up over 40%Yeah we had some rain yesterday, but it's back up to above 30 degrees for the next few days. Tomorrow's my last day of work for the summer. Uni starts again on Monday . Not sure I can really complain after a three-month break though ;). Mind you, I could do with some spare time right about now...Season 5 of The Wire finally came out in Australia!Things have quietened down on the cricket club front. I haven't heard back from either the parent who complained or the coach since I called the parent a couple of weeks ago, so I think it's safe to assume that they managed to conclude the matter between themselves in a relatively civil manner. Now I can just concentrate on organising the usual end-of-season events.

Now we can finally start watching that for the first time! er - concentrate on uni?your forgetting what it is like to be that age Stubby, you have enough energy to move the world :)Broke a mirror on the truck today and am a tad annoyed with myselfyeah I only just clipped it but even so.mind you the boss didn't say a word about it.one mirror and a clutch in almost 14 monthsthats a lot better than the guy who wrecked the pride of the fleet because he didn't extend the trailer. Also I told them as soon as it happened and the mechanics were ready with a replacement when I got back
Ski the Swift
I had something similar (not very) happen to me for the first time the other day. First time I have ever hit anything in my car, you know those yellow bollards in the McDonalds drive thru's? The ones that stick out really far? I scarped against one slightly with my side mirror, I now have a small 2cm yellow line on it... nothing a bit of polish cant fix luckily.Still, six years with only that. I have a feeling I can only be lucky for so long...

Luckily my car at the time was a white Ford Laser, so it was pretty easy to find spare parts at the wreckers to fix the boot. Uni started today. I miss the holidays already :frown5:. Once I was in the drive I slacked off, the load was over 13 tonne and with that sort of load my poor truck has major turning issues, ie the wheel doesn't want to turn unless there is some movement. Ski the Swift
Uni started today. I miss the holidays already :frown5:.Teaspoon of cement mate :PAnd Re: McDonald's bollard. I am usually very cautious of it and my side mirrors. I, for some unknown reason, was in a rush in the morning. It was around 5:30am, so I still had plenty of time to get to work. I was fairly upset with myself.

Setting high standards for yourself and doing your best to live up to those standards is a good thing, a very good thing actuallyEven so you do need to be realistic and I see that in the original post.OK true confessions time. The very first day I had gotten my car I backed into another car.Another lesson for you, make dead bloody certain you can trust the moron directing you with the sun off the mirror blinding you. It's already horribly variable and dependent upon supplements from desalination and other not-super alternatives.
Ski the Swift
All the water comes from the Hunter Region, we already give plenty to Sydney and the Central Coast. Why not hand over more water? And GS, knowing the luck of not having any car crashes for six years, my first one will be a really bad one. Seems the way things go. Also just where are all these young migrants coming from and will they be willing to support our aging population? It is a democracy after all and they could easily tip the balance. From what I get out of your posts etc Ski I am thinking your someone who can focus on something for some time, this makes accidents less likely, just make certain its the road your focused on not the cute blonde in a short skirt bending over in front of you :PYeah that almost caused an accident for me once. Stubby
Yeah that almost caused an accident for me once. When I was 14 and doing an afternoon paper-round on my treadly, this was the direct cause of me riding into the rear of a parked car. It was an expensive distraction.
