AGOT Mafia Game 72 - Adventures Beyond The Wall

House Targaryen

Recommended Posts

Hi folks!

This is the signup thread for the new installation of your beloved mafia game. Here is what you need to know:

The game will be set in Westeros, for a change. Night Watch, to be more precisely. I will use the good old avatars.

The game will be a Kingmaker game. Of course, if you'd prefer a normal game, I won't object. Just tell me in your signup PM that you prefer a normal game.

Days will last 32 hours. There will also be a weekend extension.

The game will be alted and there will be a CF.

I haven't thought about the role distribution yet, but I surely will bring up something interesting.

The game will be for 13 or more players. Everyone is welcome.

If you want to start a career at the Night Watch, please PM Lord Commander Jon Snow (aka Piper of Chaos)!

We have ravens, we have corn and a monopol on crushed ice!

Join the Watch!

Standard Rules and Game Mechanics

RULES

All players must ..

A1) Have an account on the mafia discussion board, with the same account name as on this board.

A2) Log in and view the thread and the discussion board anonymously at all times, unless they have informed the mods that this is not possible for technical reasons

A3) Post at least once every 24 hours. Any player who has not posted within the last 24 hours will be automatically modkilled, whether or not the mods announce this on the thread.

The mods may grant extensions to this limit in some cases (if so, they will give details in a later post). However, if they have not posted on the thread to announce an extension before the 24 hour limit is reached, no extension will be granted, whatever may have been said elsewhere. Please contact the mods as early as possible if you wish to request an extension.

A4) Send in role prescribed night actions (including the desire to take no action) within the time limit

A5) Treat everybody else playing with courtesy and respect

A6) Make any edits the mods request of them as soon as possible, whether or not they believe that the posts need to be edited.

A7) Contact the game mods as soon as possible if they feel you are at risk of breaking a rule or fear they or another person may have already done so.

Players must not ...

B1) Act in any way intended to reduce the chance of their faction achieving its win conditions. (However, should all surviving members of a faction agree that they wish to resign and end the game early, they may do so by PMing the mods privately, without stating their intentions on-thread until the mods post to announce that the game is over.)

B2) Discuss the game with any other living players outside this game thread except when told they may do so in their role PMs.

B3) Reveal any information about the game at all in any other thread than this one, or in any other forum (including message boards and chat rooms) where it may be seen by a living player.

B4) Give anybody access to any of their accounts (including game alts, if the game is using them), either here or on the mafia discussion board.

B5) Attempt to obtain advice about the game from anybody not currently playing.

B6) Post information on the thread relating to another player's past or current activity on (or absence from) the board that would not otherwise be available to anybody reading the thread.

B7) Quote, in whole or part, PMs from (or other private conversations with) the mods on the thread, or discuss the timing of any PMs sent to the mods.

B8) Post on the thread at any time after they are dead until the mods themselves post on the thread to announce that the game is over. Any posts accidently made after death should be immediately edited blank.

B9) Make any bets about the game.

B10) Offer to break any of these rules or any other rules the mods have set in place for the game, encourage others to do so or help to conceal the fact that rules have been broken.

AND JUST SO YOU KNOW

C1) Failure to comply with the rules may result in any punishment the mods deem appropriate, including, but not limited to: a request to edit posts; formal warnings on thread; "modkilling", and ending the game prematurely in favor of one faction or none. The mods will also report rule infractions to the metamods after the game. Except where clearly stated in the rules, the mods are free to respond to any rules violation in whatever manner they wish. In all cases the mods' decision on these matters is final.

C2) Feel free to PM or IM your thoughts (or questions) to the mods. We love to hear them!

C3) The mods reserve the right to amend the rules during the game if we realize we've forgotten to cover something.

-------------------------

As well as running the game on this thread, the mods are also responsible for administering the spoiler thread on the discussion board. Anybody not actively involved in the game (whether spectators or dead players) can request access to this thread by PMing the mods. Please not that while in general the mods will be happy to let anybody have access to this thread, they do reserve the right to refuse access to anybody for any reason. Accordingly, please do not ask anybody other than the mods for access to the spoiler thread or give yourself access to it, even if you have the power to do so.

Once given access to the thread, spoiled spectators should also take note of the following rules, and must not ...

D1) Share any information from the spoiler thread with living players, or post such in a forum where it may be seen by living players.

D2) Offer any advice, hints or strategy to living players.

D3) Make personal attacks on players in the game or on posters in the spoiler thread itself

D4) Post on the game thread before the mods announce that the game is over.

Spectators (of any sort) who ignore these rules are likely to have their access to the spoiler thread revoked and/or to be reported to the metamods.

---------------------------------------------------------

Game Mechanics

1 - General Structure

Players may begin posting as soon as the mods announce that the game has started on the thread. The game begins during the day. The day ends when when the King has made a decision who to lynch. Many games also have time limits on the days, and if no consensus is reached when the time expires, the day ends with no lynch. When the day phase has ended, night begins. The mods will then post a scene reporting the outcome of the day. Night ends when the mods post the morning scene reporting the outcome of the night actions. Day and night phases continue to alternate until the game ends.

2 - Day Phase

During the day, players may post in the thread. Some roles may have special powers which can be used during the day. See later posts for a list of roles.

2.1 - Voting Mechanics

In a Kingmaker game there are no votes. Well, you may of course vote for someone who is looking really evil, but it won't have any (but dramatic) effect.

2.5 - Ending the Day

The day ends as soon as the King has announced his decision (or once the time limit has elapsed). Anyone lynched is no longer an active player and must not post in the thread.

2.6 - Evening Scene

The mods will post a scene shortly after the day ends to report the results of the day actions. If the day ended with a player's lynch, the mods might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player's alt or alignment. This is the mods' choice, and they'll explain what, if any, information will be revealed in the game rules. There are no hidden clues in the evening scenes.

3 - Night Phase

During the night, players may post in the thread. Some players will have the ability to perform special actions. Once again, the mods decide which roles will be included for their game, so be sure to fully read the game rules and any role descriptions which may be included.

3.1 - Performing a Night Action

If your role includes the ability to perform a special action at night, you need to PM the mods to indicate the action you wish to take. Most, if not all, roles have the ability to "withhold" their powers (i.e. take no action). This will be made clear to the roled players, and, usually, to all other players as well. If you chose to not perform your allowed action, you must PM "no action" to the mods. Most games have a time limit on nights. All players must PM their night actions to the mods within this timeframe. Players are strongly encouraged to send their night actions as soon as possible. You may also send in a PM for your special action during the day phase.

3.2 - Contingent PM

If you send in a PM during the day phase, you may choose to list alternative actions contingent on the manner in which the day ended. If none of the contingencies you list actually occur, your PM will be disregarded, and you must send a new PM to the mods.

3.3 - Provisional PM

You may choose to send a provisional PM if you want to further consider your night action but do not want to extend the night if all other roled players have decided upon their actions. Provisional PMs must be clearly marked as such. A provisional PM will not be acted upon by the mods until it becomes a 'definite PM.' A provisional PM becomes definite as soon as ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM, ( b ) all other roled players that need to send night actions have done so, or ( c ) the time limit for the night has expired.

As a courtesy to other players we ask that you confirm your provisional PM as soon as you are able.

3.4 - Last Resort PM

In extraordinary circumstances you may be allowed to send in a last resort PM. A last resort PM will not be acted upon by the mods until ( a ) you confirm your choice with another PM or ( b ) the time limit for the night has expired. Should you need to send a last resort PM, you must first seek the mods approval by explaining the circumstances that necessitate such a PM. Last resort PMs are accepted only at the discretion of the mods.

3.5 - Failure to PM

If not all PMs are received within the time limit, everyone who has failed to send in a PM will be considered to have taken no action. In addition, those who failed to send in a PM will be warned by the mods or may risk further penalties.

3.6 - Changing a Night Action

PMs to the mod can be changed at any point before the new day is announced. A PM is considered to be changed only after the mod receives and has read the PM. The player bears the risk that the mod will post the morning scene after the player has sent in a new PM but before the mod has actually read it.

3.7 - Abusing the Time Limit

If the mods have included a night time limit, it begins as soon as the previous day ended, regardless of when the mods posted the evening scene. However, this time limit is a maximum limit, and all players should send in PMs as soon as they feel comfortable doing so. Players (and mods) prefer shorter nights, as people are anxious to see who may have died and to begin voting again. If the mods feel that a player is abusing the time limit by unreasonably stalling, they may force the player to take no night action or take other appropriate action.

3.8 Preventing Night Actions

Except where expressly noted, no night actions prevent any other night actions sent in from taking effect.

3.9 - Morning Scene

The night phase ends when the mods post the morning scene. The mods will post the scene shortly after all night action PMs have been received. The scene will report any player deaths that occurred during the night, and might also reveal information about the lynched player, such as the player’s alt or alignment. There are no hidden clues in the morning scenes. As soon as the scene is posted any players who have been killed at night will no longer be active players and can no longer post in the thread. The time limit for the new day will begin with the morning scene.

Section 4 - Endgame

The game will continue to alternate between day and night phases until the game ends. The game can end after either a day or night phase.

4.1 - Winning Conditions

The game ends once one faction has reached its winning conditions, which the mods will state in a later post.

Mafia is a team game. Once one faction achieves its winning conditions, all members of that faction have won whether or not they are active players when the winning conditions are achieved.

4.2 - Ending Scene

The mods will post an ending scene and declare the game over shortly after one faction achieves its winning conditions. If for any reason it becomes impossible for either faction to achieve its winning conditions, the mods will declare the game a draw.

The game is only over when a mod posts the ending scene. Even if you know (or believe you know) the result of the game before then, you may not post in the thread unless you are an active player.

4.3 - Calling the Game Early

The mods reserve the right to end the game at any time before a faction achieves its winning conditions provided there are compelling reasons to do so. In general, the mods will end the game early as soon as one faction's victory becomes inevitable.

4.4 - Spoilers

When the game is over, the mods will reveal the alts and roles of everybody who played and also give everyone access to the spoiled spectator threads on the discussion board

Special rules

1. The game

This is a Kingmaker game.

2. The Kingmaker

The Kingmaker (KM) is a player who choses the new king for each day. Each night he sends a list to the mods with two names. The first player on the ist will be crowned new king. In case that this player does not survive the night, the second player will inherit the throne. If for some reason both players should die during the night, the new king will be chosen randomly by the mods.

Restrictions:

1) The KM cannot crown himself as king.

2) The KM may not crown the same player twice in a row.

3) No player can be king more than two times, unless all surviving players other than the kingmaker have been king twice.

4) If the KM is the symp, he is not allowed to crown 2 FM twice in a row, unless it's the only way to satisfy Rule 3.

3. How to become the Kingmaker

1) The first Kingmaker

The first KM will be chosen randomly out of a pool that consist of all players that are roleless innocents.

2) All other Kingmakers

If the first KM should die, the next KM (and all others afterwards) will be determined by a list that has been created by the mods before the start of the game. This list consists all players that are either roleless innocents or a symp (!). The first living player on that list will be made KM.

If there are no RI or symps left, the new KM will be chosen randomly amongst all the remaining living players.

4. The King

The King is the only one who can convict a player to be lynched. To do this the King just has to write in bold red letters something like "I decide that player X should be lynched".

Once the King has announced his decision the day ends immediatly and the convicted player is dead and may not post anymore.

If the King fails to make a decision before the end of the timelimit, the day ends without a lynch (but lots of angry subjects).

5. Other rules

1) There will be a Coroner Finder (CF) that reveal both faction and alt of a dead player.

2) The day timelimit will be 32 hours, the night timelimit will be 8 hours.

3) The modkill timelimit will be 24 hours.

4) There will be a weekend extension for those of you who are busy at that time. The game will be frozen from the beginning of Saturday (CET) till the end of Sunday (CET). I'd say that the King still should be able to convict a player, but since I'm not sure your thoughts about this are welcome.

5) If you should discover any mistakes inside the rules, if you think something is mising or if you just plainly disagree with them, you can PM the mods before the game starts. The rules are open for any changes.

  • 2 weeks later...

It has been an especially cold day as you're training outside in Castle Black's yard with some recently recruited brothers. You both have to fight the swords and the cold wind, but despite the cold your clothes are soaked with sweat. You only mention the Lord Commander's steward, Lady Kat Stone, as she is already standing beside of you. You don't know how long she's been waiting there, but her face already shows a certain expression of impatience. You greet her breathlessly. The stewart only raises her eyebrow and adresses you without any formality:

"The Lord Commander wishes to speak to all his experienced rangers."

She pauses and examines you doubtfully.

"Somehow he thinks you belong to this group. Come to his rooms. At once."

She turns away without waiting for your answer. You're left no choice but to make your way to the Lord Commander's rooms. When you arrive you see that there are already some of the other rangers. You try to find out what has happened, but they are as surprised as you are. Soon the room is filling with more black brothers, and finally the Lord Commander and his stewart enter the room together. Lord Commander Jon Snow greets you, and you think his eyes express a certain amount of worry. Nervously you try to listen to what the Lord Commander has to say.

"Sers, I have called you because I got disturbing news from the north."

Now everyone begins to look uneasy.

"The north, Ser? Are the wights already attacking?"

"Is it the wildlings again? I heard they're organizing another attack against the wall!"

Lady Stone harrumphs loudly and everyone calms down immediatly. Lord Snow waits for a while and continues:

"I know this will surprise you - I couldn't believe it myself, to be true - but my half-brother Brandon Stark is still alive. He is somewhere deep beyond the wall where he is learning how we can win the fight against the Others!"

Now everyone is shouting around. Brandon Stark alive? There's still a heir to Winterfell? What exactly is he learning there? How does The Lord Commander know that he is alive? I bet his wolf told him so!

Lord Snow ignores your questions.

"It doesn't matter how he got there and what he has been doing. The only thing important is that he is alive and that he is going to return to Winterfell. Therefore he needs our help, for the Others are already after him. That's why I plan to send my best rangers to escort him home safely. This will be your task. I hope you won't disappoint me!"

As you leave you mention that Lord Stannis has joined the meeting while you've been listening to Lord Snow. He doesn't look to happy. No wonder, now that Lord Bolton has finally acknowledged him as the rightful king of the seven kingdoms. Surely he doesn't want a Stark to return to Winterfell. He exchanges some glances with the red witch, who as always is accompanying him, and they both leave the room without saying a single word. But that's not your business. You're already heading outside to get your belongings together. A long journey is lying in front of you, a journey that will lead you into the heart of winter.

I'm going to start the game one hour earlier than planned, since I will be out of house at 4 pm. The first hour is for free, so day 1 will last 33 hours (but only if your King turns out to be an undecisive bitch).

In the meantime, we continue our story:

After all the time of waiting and training you're anxious to leave Castle Black and to begin your mission. Lord Snow told you that his half-brother is already on his way to the Fist of the First Man where you will meet him. He also told you that they're hunted by a handful wights. Your duty is to find Brandon Stark, to defeat the wights and to return the heir of Winterfell safely back to the wall.

The second day after your department you meet a larger group of wildlings. First they try to attack you, but soon half a dozen of your opponents lie bleeding on the ground. The harsh winter has weakened their bodies and their spirit. The remaining wildings run away without caring for their own folks. The next group of wildlings is wiser than the one you already met. They only stare at you from a distance but don't dare to attack you.

At the fourth night the wights attack you. You hear the guard yelling and in a second you're up, with a dragon glass shortsword in your hand. You have problems to see anything in the darkness, and suddenly you get to the ground as something hard hits you from the right. You try to get up, but the wight is already over you. You can hear it roar and you try to break free, but your arms are blocked, the sword lying three yards away from you.You panic and try to kick the monster, but you don't have a chance against the unhuman power of that thing. The wight puts both it's hands around your throat. You can do nothing, not even yell. It's the end.

Suddenly you're free and you can hear another monster roar in your ear. You ask yourself why the wights fight each other, but then you see that it's a giant white wolf. The Lord Commander's wolf, and he rescued you!

You get back on your feet, still shaky. The battle is over, the wights are dead. Just as you want to ask where the direwolf came from, you see the face of Lord Commander Jon Snow amidst the other man. He explains that he has learned that the red witch plans to sabotage this mission, since Bran's return would spoil Stannis' plans in the North. Unfortunatly he is not able to arrest her, since the watch needs Stannis' help in the coming battles. He decided to join your group instead and to uncover the identities of the traitors that are working for Melisandre. He knows that some of you have been influenced by her magic.

The Lord Commander insists that you have to get rid of the traitors before you'll meet Brandon Stark, otherwise his half-brother might be killed. You agree with Jon Snow's logic. Yes, he is right, and now it makes sense that each of the nights before one member of your group went missing. No, your brothers didn't join the wildings as you suspected, but they were killed by the traitors. Sometimes it's hard to think when all around you is snow, snow, snow.

You wish you had your own direwolf to protect you at night against the murderers, as Ghost is only caring for the life of his master. No, you have to care for yourself. You have to find all Stannis supporters to save your own life. And Lord Brandon Stark, of course.

Cold... so cold...

And you wake us all early? Drag us from our sleeping bags into the ice to find a killer amongst us?

Just another hour sleep and the sun may have risen properly, and better warmed my cold, cold limbs...

Lord Snow, you heartless bastard!

I don't know who I hate more...

Lord Snow for waking us all up, taking me from my dreams of a warm inn, a buxom lass and a cool beer...

My ISP who decided to give me a heart attack by dropping my TV and Internet, giving the same error code on the box as it did before with a 3 day outage (it's all back now, so just a small glitch!)...

Or you silent bastards. I can see you lurking! I don't know who you are, but I'm sure you are up to no good.

Dear random.org,

As newly crowned incumbent to the Night Watch Throne (how does this even fit the setting?), we hate thank you from the bottom of our royal heart for this cruel joke generous office bestowed upon our humble self. Truly, there is nothing we'd rather do than be the sole arbiter of the day's lynch. Particularly on Day One. We are totally confident that this will end well. Totally.

We can barely restrain our excitement already.

Sincerely,

King Grandison I

P.S.: I expect lots of grovelling.

I'm glad you're so confident! Yours is truly by far the most important decision in the game. Everybody knows that day ones are crucial in a Kingsmaker game. They will make or break the innocent's efforts. A correct lynch and it's almost sure that the FM will be unable to recover. Revealed and vulnerable they'll cower and hide, but be ultimately destroyed by the righteous wrath of the innocents. A wrong lynch on the other hand, would be a total catastrophe. The game would plummet into a spiral of chaos and confusion which would dizzy even Piper himself. People will suspect you for your folly. Innocents will start accusing each other in a fratricide war of extermination while the FM wring their hands and cackle as our numbers dwindle into oblivion.

P.S.: I expect lots of grovelling.

I deeply admire you Grandison. I have full confidence in your ability to see through the insincere grovelling other players will offer you and make the correct decision when the day ends. If anyone can do it, it's you. Our hopes rest with you, Grandison. We know you wont let us down.

This is obviously a symp clue being sent to a master.

Firstly, may I draw your attention to this:

Everybody knows that day ones are crucial in a Kingsmaker game

KingSmaker? Rather than Kingmaker?

My brothers, what does S stand for?

Symp.

Secondly, I also notice that if you take the first line from each sentence, you get:

I'm Yours. Everybody, they a revealed a the people. Innocents, I I If Our We.

Now firstly, "I'm yours" seems to be obvious. It's a statement of belonging. "Everybody, they-ah revealed-ah the people." - Yes i edited it to how you'd say it, if you were a phony Italian. Now phony italian to me is a clear sign that someone is not what they seem, it not an innocent. Finally... "Innocents, ayayifarewe."

Now, Ayayifarewe is a lesser known mongolian dialect's word for "Die like the scum you are".

With this information, I can't see how we can fail to win. The symp has already been caught.

I wonder if he coded his masters into the message? I'll go have a look.

Tarbeck, NO VOTING!

This is a monarchy, not a democracy. And not one of those sissy twenty-first-century tea-sipping expensive handbag-wearing constitutional monarchies either. You have no voice.

I sentence you to twenty lashes for your impudence! :spank:

By the way, was there any reason you commented on Harclay's flattery, but not on Plumm's?

Everybody knows that day ones are crucial in a Kingsmaker game

KingSmaker? Rather than Kingmaker?

*gasp* How dare you?

You've usurped my red text of doom!

Only I use the red text. My weapon, mine! Feel its dangerous power.

Ooh, did that scare you? Thought I was going to go ballistic and execute you for a second, didn't you?

Ten lashes for you. :spank: Your sentence has been lightened for pointing out that symp clue. Harclay is off my list today. Don't worry, buddy. Your masters have got you covered. ;)

Wait...

I thought that Melisandre was a big believer in using red...

Typical. Day 1 and we already have a killer-king!

Of course, if you are Melisandre herself in disguise, it's more a killer queen, is it not?

Tell me, are you dynamite with a laser beam?
