George R.R. Martin is keeping himself very busy, with Dance with Dragons, Fort Freak, and a host of other tasks and projects now that he’s gotten taxes out of the way. Among them? Reviewing the latest batch of audition tapes. This follows our previous report on the fact that casting is going on for the role of Daenerys Targaryen, which may or may not mean that Tamzin Merchant is definitely out of HBO’s Game of Thrones.

However, one other thing that hasn’t been mentioned very much is that it’s quite possible that casting has begun in the U.K. for the many roles that will need to be filled by the time late June roles around. As always, more information as soon as we get it.

Maybe I missed the thread for this but do we know what other roles are going to be cast? I'm assuming a number of periphery characters will disappear for the sake of cost (rather expect Dany to have one handmaid instead of the two, for example) and am curious to see who will be cut.

From what I've heard of the pilot script from others, Doreah, Irri, and Jhiqui were all introduced.

We don't know what casting is going on or will be going on at this time.

The cost for an actress to play Irri or Jhiqui is probably so minimal that there isn't any advantage to cutting one.

In the leaked pilot script, handmaidens for Dany were mentioned as gifts at her wedding, and named: Irri and Jhiqui, with black hair and almond-shaped eyes, and then Doreah, fair-haired and blue-eyed. However, none were cast for the shoot in Morocco. There's a chance they just used stand-ins (like with the girl temporarily cast as Myrcella) and plan on filling the roles now that the pilot has gone to series.
