Worldcon 2011: Reno

Recommended Posts

Membership registration

Anyone looking for room mates to share with should post in this thread and hopefully those with beds available can find those looking for a bed. Sharing helps keeps everyone's costs down and is a good way to make some new friends.

VOLUNTEERING

Worldcon is a convention for fans run by fans and that means it cannot operate without an army of volunteers. The BWB have a good track record of signing up and joining in with volunteer work at Worldcon and this year should be no different.

If you can spare a few hours during the week, before, during and after Worldcon then please fill in a volunteer form. Certainly all those who have been to a Worldcon before should consider it and the sooner you send in your form the more likely it is you'll get the job you want to do. Don't forget to mention that you're from the BWB!

If anyone is interested in working program ops you can send a PM to Smofbabe who can give you more details on how to get involved.

ATTENDANCE DATES

Some people may be wondering which dates you should be in Reno for. Most people will be arriving on either Tues 16 or Wed 17 August and staying through to Sunday evening or Monday morning. WorldCon do have a nasty habit of having great events right at the start of the programme on the first day or right at the end on the last day which means late arrivals or early leavers could miss out on something AWESOME like George's reading for example (was early in Denver 2008, was the last panel in Montreal 2009 with only the closing ceremony after it).

To make sure you get the most out of your WorldCon membership plan to be available for the duration of the Con. But if you can only make one or two days it will still be worth coming because it will be a great time!

LAKE TAHOE: Tues 16 Aug 10.00 AM

MG, Neal and Ithanos are going on a tour/hike at the beautiful Lake Tahoe taking place on the Tuesday before WorldCon. Anyone interested should post in the Lake Tahoe Hike thread.

BWB MEET 'N GREET: Thurs 18 Aug 8.00 PM

The first Official BWB event of the con will be a meet 'n greet event where everyone can learn more about the Brotherhood and what we do as a group. This has been arranged with the Programming Committee, we have a room booked and this event will be listed in the WorldCon Program.

BWB WORLDCON PARTY

There will be two absolutely glorious parties at Reno: a BwB-only shindig on Friday, and a public party on Saturday. We need volunteers for both parties to keep them running smoothly. Have no fear, we won't make you work the entire night, either night. But a couple of hours of service will make the party successful, and will also ease the burden on those who are the main party organizers (who will forever be grateful). If you're hoping to go on the quest, let us know and we'll make sure we schedule you so that you're free when the quest begins.

To volunteer for duties at the party please post in the party thread.

We require a donation of $30.00 USD per BwB member to cover the party costs. Please see the party financials thread for full details.

ATTENDANCE LIST

Please post in the WorldCon head count thread to confirm that you are definitely attending, maybe attending, or dropping out. This is very important for setting party budgets and planning events. It would be a massive help for everyone to please make sure they do that. This particular thread is for information and discussion which should not be posted in the head count thread - thank you.

Those who have to drop out should post here and someone will hopefully be able to buy your membership from you - they are transferable!

Also if you post the dates you will be in Reno, your flight arrival/departure times and which hotel you are staying in I will add it to this list. Pretty useful information for arranging to meet people at the airport and sharing taxis or buses to the hotels.

ETA: Have arranged list into arrival date order. Will add room numbers if people wish to share that detail here.

Getting a membership sooner rather than later can save you some serious bucks over waiting until you arrive at the convention to buy a membership. The membership is transferrable - meaning you can assign the membership to someone else if you can't go. Having an attending membership allows you to vote for the Hugos, vote in site selection as well as attend the convention. If you can't afford a full membership now, or just aren't certain that you can even consider coming to WorldCon in 2012, get a supporting membership, which will allow you to vote, and would be applied to the price of an attending membership if you decide to convert.

The budgets for all departments of a WorldCon are adjusted over the run-up to the convention to reflect the projected income from memberships, dealer and art show fees, and other sources of income balanced against the outgoing cash for a multitude of equipment, space, office supplies and unique fabrications that are needed for the public spaces and events at a WorldCon. Since WorldCons are non-profit, run by volunteers, the general consensus among con-runners is that a WorldCon committee must be very cautious in running up expenses without the cash in the bank. So the more people who buy memberships early, the more cash the convention has up-front when it is needed to secure contracts and buy goods and services. If the committee knows they've met their membership goals for the two years leading up to their Big Show, they'll be able to to provide more amenities to everyone who attends, can often give small refunds to people who log crazy hours volunteering or contribute their expertise to programming, and can OK spending an extra 5K for chocolate and champagne fountains in the fan hospitality suites. (OK, maybe not the fountains, but hey, we could at least suggest it at the next Fannish Inquisition!)

The convention committee is an excellent mix of well-respected con runners, their site and hotels look like we'll enjoy the space we'll be living in for 5+ days so I'm really looking forward to Reno, and I hope we'll see you all there.

Bought my membership today. $140 for attending if you buy today or tomorrow--and I know everyone wants to go to Reno.

Hint for Reno: San Francisco is a great place to transfer flights (lots of flights on Southwest from SF to Reno), and you can arrange a stopover in our fair city if you want a longer trip but Reno isn't your thing. Come hang out with BWB NorCal!

Upgraded my voting pre-supporting to attending today for $75. Now all I need is to actually get there next year. Maybe time to use my Amtrak points and turn into a cross (almost) country train trip? 70,000 for a roomette with all meals included. Or fly? Or half-n-half. Decisions, decisions. . .

since Im here (reno) feel free to ask questions about the hotels, locations/etc.

On average how high is the pollen count in August? More importantly are the Mexican restaurants in Reno run by actual Mexicans? I ask because the Mexican restaurants in my area serve Salvadorian and Peruvian food.

Arlington Bill and I just bought our memberships with less than 8 hours to spare.

you will be happy (maybe) with the mexican food here, it is not like east coast but it is served up by real live mexicans :)

as for the pollen count, I will have to check with my wife, I dont think its bad at all, by august everything is fried by the sun and not really blooming.

There are several cheaper hotels that are in the area. The Con location is a few miles out of down-town and that whats makes the Atlantis and Peppermill so "good", they get you guys in and you have a hard time getting the motivation to go anyplace else!

I highly recommend 2 day trips, one to tahoe and one to virginia city, you have to see lake tahoe and a drink at the bucket of blood is a must! .. a good number of guys like to go to the brothels, not to ..umm.. sample the wares, but just to have a drink at the bar and be able to tell their buddies that they went...really, I drove limo for a while and I had a ton of guys from out of town that did that.

hmm... I wonder if I should put together a BwB field trip to the lake and such, NOT to the brothel though! My wife would kill me for being even close :D

I would also be open to the idea of my throwing a bbq for a dozen or two board members.. who wants to kidnap a certain author?

Yay for actual Mexicans!

Thanks for the info. Really looking forward to going next year.

I want to go to a brothel. I mean, I think it would be very interesting to see one and I always wanted to interview a lady who worked in one. (I made up a fake interview with a prostitute when I was in 8th grade for an assignment where we were supposed to interview someone in a job field we were interested in---I was in a defiant stage) Anyway, the desire to do the interview has never left me. Seriously, I would love this.

I am renting a house for the week. It says it is 7 minutes from the Peppermill. It also has a bbq and deck out back with some nice views. I considered a party there, and we wouldn’t need to limit the numbers to a couple dozen.

Nevada is not very pollen-y, but sagebrush and rabbitbrush do bloom kind of randomly and they do so in the summer--or at least they did in the area where I worked north of Reno.

There are some excellent Mexican restaurants in Reno. I will have to get the name of this one place from my advisor, who was at UNR for 11 years and knows Reno inside and out, especially the food places.

If anyone wants a field trip of, um, Pleistocene lacustrine geomorphology, I can totally do that. But I doubt anyone would be interested. Brothels are far more interesting than giant piles of gravel. :P

just wondering... what part of town is it in, do you know the street its on? I hope its the 7 minutes towards a nice area and not 7 minutes into the gang areas :D

There are 2 places, and judging by the pictures, they are in the nice areas.

One

Two

edit: fixed links

#1 is going to be farther away, you would be taking 395 north to 80 west and then I think you would be getting off on Virginia street. Its a more rural area and would be best for a larger outdoor gathering.

#2 is within 2 miles of the Atlantis/Peppermill. Seems to be in a more suburban area and would have (possibly) a more limited outdoor party potential. But of course would be much easier to get to from the Con.

If you can give me addresses I would be able to give you a better idea.

Thanks. I'll try and get the addresses. I've gone over the pros and cons of each place and really it's a toss up. I don't want to be more than 15-20 minutes away from the con. If #1 is too far, that will pretty much settle the issue.

as far as i can tell with #1 it seems to have more outdoor party area, though it looks mostly dirt or gravel, but a lot of houses are that way out here. To get to it you would either leave the Con and turn right on Virginia and go all the way to downtown and beyond, or take the highway. Either way I wouldnt suggest #1 if you plan to have a party(s) and people might drink a bit to much.

#2 may very well be within walking distance of the Con, if you dont mind a 15 - 20 minute walk, or a very short drive.

Lany, if you're considering something that is within walking distance, do it. All my con experience so far has told me that walking beats driving, cause, you know, there's booze involved. And Reno should be very pleasant to walk around at night.

I am so pumped for this con. I can't believe it's over a year away. This is what I was like for Denver.

well...ah... some parts of reno are nice to walk around at night :)

the location the Con is at is a few miles outside of downtown and away from other casinos.

Damn. Well done Min for not spotting this until 2 weeks after the prices went up. Still, this means I can at least wait until next payday, next price-hike isn't till September now.
