A Thread for Small Questions III

What evidence is there to say that Loras is gay? It's something I've seen aroundd the forums frequently the last few days, but I never really got that impression from the books. There's likely something major I've overlooked, I'm just curious.
On top of what was said already, it was confirmed by the word of god. Note (in the same ssm) that the rainbow guard was not planned to be any indication of it.

What exactly is the relationship between Ned and Syrio? How did Ned come to know about this Braavosi swordsman? Has Ned ever been across the Narrow Sea? Where did they meet? I dunno, it seems very random that this expert Braavosi swordsman would have this type of relationship with Ned.
Ned was looking for a waterdancer teacher. Someone recommended Syrio to him (as Ned says "he had the best references"), so he hired him. Syrio had long left Braavos to teach his craft in KL. Nothing surprising in that: we know from Leo Tyrell in Oldtown that waterdancing is popular amongst the westerosi nobles. It's a safe job for an old retired bodyguard.

Of course some people don't believe Syrio has to work to eat, so they think he was sent in KL by some nefarious organisation for motives they don't really know but link to Arya. They are also those who think the guy is immortal.

In Davos' POV, during his discussion with Stannis regarding Edric Storm (Storm of Swords), Stannish mentions Melisandre's prophecy to him that "She talks of prophecies... a hero reborn in the sea, living dragons hatched from dead stone...she speaks of signs and swears they point to me."

Obviously we know that dragons have been hatched from dead stone but who is the "hero reborn in the sea"? I'm assuming it is someone that drowned and was given life again like the Ironborn "Damphair" (Aeron) Greyjoy.

Hi fragment,

This slightly weird link gives some info on it, as does this from the citadel.

I believe the idea of Dany fitting the prophesy is that she was "Reborn" in the Dothraki Sea. It's mentioned another time as being reborn of smoke and salt. In Dany's case this is supposed to be the smoke of Drogo's pyre and the salt of her tears.

However, I'm still holding out for it being Davos himself. He's considered the least likely candidate but is the only contender who's literally reborn from the sea and from the smoke and fire on the Blackwater. Also there's got to be a reason Mel's not killed him yet. He does have the downside that he's apparently dead :(

1. Does GRRM ever describe the texture of Dany's hair? i.e. straight, curly, thick, etc.

2. When Jhiqui braids Dany's hair in the Dothraki fashion, do you think that it's one BIG braid or a few small braids?

3. At the end of AFfC, how many bells has Dany collected?

1. I'm not sure there is any Canon on this but I've seen it a straight in the pictures approved by GRRM. And I always picture it as straight.

2. I think it's one large braid, but again I can't quote to support this.

3. 4. one for the house of the undying and one each for Astapor, Yunkai and Mereen. Or so I'd imagine.

Is it just me, or these questions sound like some sort of ASOIAF trivia game show?

For FIVE points, how many bells has Daenerys collected at the end of AFFC?" Ding ding ding! I'm sorry, but the CORRECT answer is 12. You forgot to factor in her extensive bell collection from her time at Braavos. But you won't be going home empty-handed! See my lovely assistant for your parting gifts, including TWO complimentary Viserys plushies and 1 replica of the crossbow bolt that Tyrion planted in Tywin's bowels!

The quote is, "Jhiqui had braided her hair Dothraki fashion, and fastened a silver bell to the end of the braid."

It is in the singular, and Jhogo always only had only one, IIRC.

Wouldn't that be a fun game show? ;)

I have two small questions.

1. Why do Doran and Oberyn Martell get the title of "prince" instead of "lord"? Is it because they are "of the line of Nymeria," or is it just that Dorne retains some customs and practices that the rest of Westeros doesn't follow?

Pretty certain George pronounces "Ser" as "Sir".

2. Also: Speaking of the above, does anyone know why GRRM decided to use "ser" for "sir" and "southron" for "southern"? I've always wondered if it was just to be distinctive, and if so, why there aren't any other little spelling changes throughout the series.

Horza:

I am not stupid, but I am from other country where English isn't mother tongue so could you tell me what in hell means a 'fro?

To be fair though, Horza is also from a country where they don't speak English: Australia.

:P

I was just reading a topic about Varys and everyone was talking about how his spy system has been revealed. Now, I know he gets lots of boys from Illyiro, but can someone point me to the hints in the text that confirm he cuts the tongues and shoves them in the walls? It makes sense but I just can't seem to put the hints together. Could anyone help with this? Thanks.

It is the scene where Arya sees Illyrio and Varys underneath the Red Keep: The conversation goes along the lines of "the ones you need are hard to find, so young to know their letters ... perhaps older ... not die so easy."

"No. The younger ones are safer ... treat them gently ..."

"...If they kept their tongues.... "

"the risk ..."

From that snippet of conversation can be deduced they are talking about young children whose tongues are removed, but who can read/write, and spy for Varys.

Varys is a right bastard really. All that crap about serving the realm ... yeah right. How are you serving the realm by cutting out the tongues of kids? How is that any different from what was done to Varys?

Ok ... Varys rant over, carry on!
