red snow
That's great Eloisa :)Now where do we go? Does anybody know a nice not too busy pub or restaurant with nice food?Is there a particulr station or tube/rail line that is convenient for you to get to your hotel? We could use that to narrow down the options. My knowledge of good places isn't vast but the other London folk are usually good with ideas - maybe they will chip in. Otherwise I'll try and pick somewhere.
Alytha
My hotel is near Russel Square. I've been there before, but I wasn't really paying attention to pubs much. I like the Hard Rock Cafe (at the lower corner of Hyde Park) but it's usually pretty busy.

Not sure about good food but there's several chain pubs that do cheap and cheerful food.
Zoë Sumra
As you have local knowledge, I bow to your superior pub-picking-power. *bows*
Sophelia
My mother just said she went to a superb (free) Picasso exhibition somewhere near King's Cross - apparently it's on until end of August and she strongly recommended it.

Alytha
No final decision yet, I guess we'll meet around 6 and go for some food and drinks...I'll rely on the locals to suggest a restaurant /pub :)
Isis
I just wanted to say that I went to the map exhibition at the British Library today and it was marvellous. I thoroughly recommend you check it out if you like maps even a bit - there is some beautiful stuff there. It closes at 6pm weekdays, except Tuesdays when it closes at 8pm. And it's kind of near by. red snow
I'll throw these two locations out as potential meet-up placescittie of Yorkeorprincess louiseThe second one doesn't do food though and while the first does do food I can't vouch for the quality but both are nice pubs with decent priced beers.I'm away until Monday so can't do any other suggestions but will be happy to along to another location. Alytha
The Cittie of Yorke looks really nice, so I'd go for that one :)I'd suggest to meet there at around 6pm, and everybody who comes in later can join us :)(anyone who can be in the city earlier can also tell me and we could do stuff ;) )
Zoë Sumra
I've eaten at the Cittie of Yorke before (about eighteen months ago) and certainly don't remember anyone in the group I was with (about twenty of us) reporting anything wrong with the food... theMountainGoat
I arrived at the Cittie of York to find williamjm, Alytha and Eloisa stood in the doorway like some kind of geek bouncers. Rather than go in and take a seat in the cellar bar (we weren't going to get a table in the upstairs bar) we decided to stay in the door and on the pavement just outside, getting in everyone's way as we waited for Red Snow to arrive and possibly Mexal as well. Nobody was too sure what Mexal looks like but I have seen a photo of him from 3 years ago at TriNocCon, although he was drunk in it and I'm sure he has changed a bit since then. I don't think Mexal did try to find us but if you did sorry you missed us, we really should meet up some time, seriously almost 2 years living in London and you've not met many of the London BWB? I blame all the hot women you've been spending your time chasing! While waiting for Red Snow we caught up with what's going on with each other, discussed Worldcon and Octocon a little, and then somehow we got onto the subject of which of us would be most suitable for taking over the entire world and I suggested the obvious answer was william since he did so well at the quiz in Chester. He tried to protest but in the end he accepted that knowing random facts about sci-fi & fantasy books and movies and being able to correctly estimate the population of Britain in the 18th Century ideally qualify him as Ruler of the World. Then we pointed out that we were merely pushing him forward into the spotlight of ruler (where the assassins can see him) while the other 3 of us ran things from the shadows, the power behind the throne. So then we discussed which parts of the world we would have for ourselves. Eloisa wanted a small group of beautiful islands (can't remember the name) but when asked where they are she said Micronesia and so we asked why not take the whole of Micronesia, why just one small set of the islands? I don't recall where Alytha wanted, nowhere contentious, and since I am going there soon I went for Australia which everyone decided was OK with them since they did not want the snakes and spiders, but I countered by saying all deadly beasts would be put onto ships and sent to them, which inevitably led to the breaking up of our world ruling cabal, open warfare, empire building and Genghis Khan's libido.Going back to Worldcon I brought up the fact that we needed a theme for the BWB party and without hesitation both Eloisa and Alytha suggested kangaroos. Usually the party theme is GRRM related, last year in Montreal it was an Iron Islands theme with the 'blood of the kraken' as our drink and blue-grey coverings on tables and walls around the room. Two years ago in Denver it was Wild Cards with 'the Great and Powerful Turtle Remembrance Punch'. I don't believe George has written anything containing kangaroos? Though it is entirely possible that kangaroos exist in Southryos or even Antipodeanryos. Perhaps we should ask him this most important of all questions, do kangaroos exist in the world of ASOIAF?Just as we were about to give up waiting for Red Snow he arrived. We went downstairs to the very hot and not so spacious cellar bar where they serve the food to order some dinner. The food was not bad, but not great either. Reasonably priced for what you got so I would not complain about it. Eloisa had lasagne, Alytha had tikka massalla, both william and I had gammon and eggs, and Red Snow had scampi and chips. Soon after we had finished eating Eloisa's fiancée arrived and I asked the couple how their wedding plans are coming along. Eloisa told me that she spent the entire day googling images of women in veils with their hair down without much luck only to discover the exact kind of thing she was looking for on the back of the Evening Standard.Just in case you are not aware Eloisa is getting married at Redemption Con 2011. I was going to pimp this con, which the British BWB contingent should try to be at, in my Chester Report (which is about 90% written but I got bored with it and decided that if even I could not stand its tedious detailing anymore nobody else would be interested so have not finished it, but I don't know maybe someone wants to read it?). The convention takes place 25-27 February 2011 at the Britannia Hotel in Coventry. See the Redemption website for more details. 2011 is going to be a big year for BWB weddings at conventions with 2 taking place that I'm aware of, but Eloisa is getting in there first so if you can make it there please do because they deserve some support.Anyway, we decided to go somewhere more spacious and Mr Eloisa-to-be suggested Penderell's Oak, a nearby pub where we were able to easily find a large table and stretch out a bit. I did notice that after about 10 minutes everyone on the tables around us seemed to quietly get up and leave, I think mostly because we were talking quite loudly about Doctor Who and the new Sherlock TV series which seem obviously set up for a crossover. This quickly moved on to suggesting other good Doctor Who crossovers such as with David Tenant's Hamlet or Casanova and with Christopher Eccleston as an invisible man. Alytha told us that she had started writing some fanfic where all 4 of David Tenant's well known characters all meet up. 'So long as that's not slashfic' I said because that would just be weird, 'Tenant/Tenant/Tenant/Tenant'. 'That's taking self love to a whole new level and like Austin Powers said, technically it's not cheating baby!' said Mr Eloisa  Not long after that it was time for me to go, I said my goodbyes and wished Alytha a fun day tomorrow (well today now) with Sophelia, I believe they are going to an art show about dragons somewhere. Red Snow left at the same time as me and we chatted on the way back to Waterloo where he stayed on the tube and I got off to catch my train home. Alytha
I'm back home after a bit of adventure yesterday, because I got a bit stuck in the British Museum and was half an hour later than I'd calculated. I just about made it to the airport at minimal check-in time, and had to carry my luggage to the plane myself. (in the process of which half of my toilettries got confiscated so I couldn't blow up the plane with a cunning mixture of shampoo, shower-gel, sunscreen an deodorant). While they utterly ignored the huge Swiss Army knife in my suitcase...After a hearty sprint across London City Airport I finally got on my plane :)Thanks to all of you who travelled halfway across Britain to meet me, and Sophie who sacrificed her only free day in London for me :grouphug:I hope you'll come to Luxembourg one day, I'll show you around :)BTW: There are exactly 42 kangaroos in Martinworld. They might be Direroos. (Or they might not have any digestive problems)And my terrtories once William takes over the world is Palau
