Darkness

Dune

Recommended Posts

I have just started to read the Dune series.

I was thinking of just reading;

Dune

Dune Messiah

Children of Dune

God Emperor of Dune

Heretics of Dune

Chapter House Dune

I know there is a prequel, legends of dune etc http://en.wikipedia....Original_series

I was wondering, should I just read the original series and not the rest? Has anyone read the rest, is it any good?

I should have noted, please no spoilers. I am just reading the first book.

Stop after God Emperor of Dune, the rest aren't worth it. And especially not the prequels and fake sequels, they're all garbage.

I've read Dune, Dune Messiah (my favorite so far) and half of Children of Dune. The prequels sound interesting, I'd like to check them out eventually.

Are you by chance finding the series hard to read? I enjoy the story, but it's almost a chore to get through the books :blushing:

I liked all the books by Frank Herbert but I wouldn't recommend any of the travesties written by his son. They define awful torture porn...my advice is to spare yourself some suffering and pass.

Seconded.

If you must know what happened with the Herbert Jr/Kevin Anderson abominations, read the synopses on Wikipedia.

Don't do it. You have too much to live for. Or if you must, at least don't do it this way. I'm told the Japanese practice ritual self-disembowelment. I recommend this as a better, cleaner alternative.

If your really into Dune then i would say you should check out the prequels....House atriedes, etc.I think people are too pedantic and stuffy about the new ones i love the dune saga and really enjoyed reading the characters back stories...give it a shot.I think Brian Herbert really paid a great tribute too his fathers work.

Ignore the people who don't like Heretics and Chapterhouse. They're great books and well worth the read. Opinions vary but at least give them a shot. Just don't ever read Sandworms of Dune and Hunters of Dune. They're complete crap and not even close to true sequels to Chapterhouse Dune.

No, I am actually finding them easy to read. I read like 70 pages today, and I was like WTF, I was just on page 70 this morning and now am on 150.

I will give them a try.

After the original series, I just feel like the rest were a way to try and make money, and nothing more.

I loved every second of Dune, was left completely untouched by Messiah, hated every second of Children and quit halfway through God-Emperor. There you have it.

STAY AWAY FROM THE ANDERSON-BRIAN-HERBERT-CRAP!

It is because of Brian Herbert why writers should either die without issue, or give over the rights to their works to Christopher Tolkien.

It is utter crap: Bad writing, bad and stupid plots, totally twisting the meaning of the original work.

If you are interested in the background stuff of Dune universe, try to acquire this volume: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dune_Encyclopedia

It paints are far more convincing and inspiring of the background of the Dune than Anderson and that Herbert brat could dream of.

And, of course, if you like the first three books, don't stop after 'God Emperor'. The last two books are worth reading.

They are ... but they both flesh out the Bene Gesserit quite a bit, so if you liked when they appeared you'll enjoy them. If you didn't ...

the prequels make no sense, they give the proto-Bene Gesserit tele-kinetic powers, which never ever show up in the original series, in fact, there was no evidence of any "supernatural" powers in any of the original books - the Bene Gesserit were all Dunyain-like, they had detailed breeding programs to make super-humans and such.

I loved the first three Dune books. God Emperor was strange, but I think now that I'm older I might actually appreciate it. I couldn't get through Heretics and Chapterhouse, but again I might try again.

The books not written by Herbert are absolutely terrible. Stick to the ones listed, if those. Definitely the first three--they have a nice arc and feel complete in the end. But the first book is the best. The others aren't near its quality, though they're still fun.

So far I am enjoying the first book a lot, so far I like it. I am 3/4 of the way through the book. I read roughly 200 pages in one sitting, shows you how much I enjoyed it. The only reason I stopped reading was because it was like 6am in the morning and I was getting very sleepy.

So much word.

IMO, each progressive book got worse and worse, and the non-Frank Herbert written were totally unreadable. But even the ones he did write weren't very good, except Dune itself which was fantastic and has a good enough conclusion that there really is no need to keep reading- those are a telling a different story, and not a very good one.
