Westeros Blog: Conan Stevens Blogs From Belfast

Westeros

Recommended Posts

There’s a terrific blog post from Conan Stevens (cast as Gregor Clegane, the Mountain that Rides) from Belfast, in which he recounts details such as his diet, his training regimen, and his run-ins with Jason Momoa (Khal Drogo) and Rory McCann (Sandor Clegane, the Hound) at the training center, as well as bumping into executive producers David Benioff and D.B. Weiss. He mentions that he’s started work on a short, brutal fight sequence he’ll be having, the choreography being handled by stunt coordinator Buster Reeves and his team.

On Monday, he’ll be taking part in “intensive horse riding lessons” from a famous horse riding stunt team, and feels that with all this intense training and this film footage, he’ll be able to apply to be an accredited stuntman in his native Australia.

And like in a good Pro-Wrestling match the fight styles will help the audience know the characters personalities.

I found this bit slightly worrying. What, are we gonna have special attacks or something?

He just means the fight choreography, the way the different characters move in battle, will reflect their personalities as characters. It's like in dance, the way dancers move in a ballet is part of telling the story or describing the character. This is no different.

Or, if you need a slightly more manly analogy, look at the overused-but-awesome sword fight in Rob Roy. Cunningham dances around with his rapier, inflicts small cuts on Roy constantly, and generally shows off his sadistic personality through the choreography.

At bare minimum, if they follow the book, Sandor and Gregor really do fight differently. For example, at the Hand's tourney when they fight directly, we're told that Gregor holds nothing back, and is clearly trying to kill Sandor with blows towards the head ... while Sandor avoids attacking his helmetless brother's head and seems mostly to just be trying to hold him off.

Gregor clegane is a tank, barreling through, hammering away with huge cuts of his huge sword, mowing down men on the battlefield. There's no finesse. Sandor, as GRRM has noted, is a big and powerful man, but one who is also surprisingly light on his feet and quick. There'll definitely be a difference in how these two men fight, and that does reveal a little bit about the characters.

Conan's back in Thailand already, having finished filming his scenes. Although he doesn't say whether he's filmed everything for season one already, or if they just won't need him for a few weeks and let him go home for a break.
