The Anti-Targ
Ponting ignoring history in his decision to bat first? From Cricinfo:"In six of the last eight Tests at Adelaide, the team batting first has gone on to lose the match," Miller reminds us. Porcupine Tree
Worst start for Aussies since 1950! 12 for 3 after 6 overs!Really like the new stand, btw, Adelaide is looking good.C&b chance gone down...
ljkeane
Ponting ignoring history in his decision to bat first?Pretty much everyone seemed to be of the opinion that it was a bat first pitch so I don't think you can really blame Ponting, especially after the second innings at Brisbane. There's always a risk of losing wickets early (as they have), but 8/10 times they'd probably go on to make a decent score on a pitch like this, assuming it settles down a bit after the first couple of hours.Really like the new stand, btw, Adelaide is looking good.Brisbane was quite an ugly ground, I thought, Adelaide does look a lot nicer. Jeor
So, what did I miss? :leer:Ok, so I was teaching a class and checking the score on my laptop as we were going along and could not believe my eyes. For a second I thought some mad English supporter had hijacked the Cricinfo website and started spurting out dreamland commentary...but alas, it was true!A rejuvenated Hussey had better get us through. Basically our tail starts at No.6 with Marcus North. I suppose Haddin at 7 is ok but the rest will collapse like a house of cards. I think realistically we'll probably only get 50 runs out of North and numbers 8-11. That means Hussey, Watson and Haddin are going to have to do some heavy lifting. And a first innings score of 400 is probably below par, given England's heavy batting lineup and Australia's bowling woes. Mind you, I had a bit of a flutter and noticed that both Australia and England were well behind the odds in favour of a draw, so I stand to make about $50 as long as there's a result...doesn't matter who wins. ;) Of course, I also stand to lose about $80 if it's a draw, so hmm. Jeor
Putting my money on a result looks like a good call...The Goober fails to convert yet another half-century and now the Walking Wicket has come to the crease.Hussey and Haddin, pretend that this is the Gabba, and then we might be ok. But seriously, at 4/96 with North, Haddin and a very collapsible tail, I think we'll be lucky to get to 250. England will probably rack up a 200+ lead and hope they don't have to bat again in the match.EDITED: Heard a stat on the radio last Test that when North comes in and the score is less than 150, his average is 6. Basically all his high scores have come when the team is already on top, and he is yet to play a decent innings when the team is in trouble. The Winged Shadow
Looks like someone switched the pitch of the Gabba (not the shit pitch we played on last week) and the Oval. :Pedit: I was wrong. No one switched the pitch. Australia just sucks. <_<

The tail did indeed collapse and we did indeed fail to get even 250. A first innings par score here is probably 400, and you'd want even more than that if you could. Maltaran
Katich's wicket is being described as a "diamond duck" on the BBC. I've never heard that term before, but then being out without facing a single ball is pretty rare.
